ANNOUNCEMENT: Harvard International II/ Fake ACF (3/20/10)

Post by Mechanical Beasts »

Seeing as Kunle announced a 3/27 tournament already today, I'd be remiss not to announce my own! This is a stub for now, but I did want to confirm what has been whispered about in shadowy alleys for months. HI will happen again; it will take FICHTE weekend. It will be hosted at Harvard and is open to mirrors elsewhere. It will be housewritten and all of the tossups will be on the Stone-Cech compactification.

Please, come!

AM I ELIGIBLE TO PLAY THIS TOURNAMENT?

Yes, you are.

FEES

$120 per team
-$5 per functioning buzzer set
-$10 per functioning moderator

FIELD

Brown (hopefully two)
VCU + Jonathan Magin
RPI + Yetman + Jeremy
Yale
Penn/Maryland/Brandeis (Eric Mukherjee, Hannah Kirsch, Chris Ray, Andrew Lim)

I think I speak for everyone at Harvard when I say that if Aaron wants to honor us with his presence on his 21st birthday, we will throw one hell of a party for him after the tournament.

Hey--

This set is open for mirrors. We're interested in having something in the West Coast and potentially the South as well; if we'd still draw top teams like Chicago and illinois to the main site (of which there have been RUMORS), we'd be interested in a Midwest site as well. (And if you think your school is central to a region that both isn't well described by those three regions AND could draw a field to play a nationals difficulty set, please contact me anyway!)

Please email me ([email protected]) and we can discuss.

This sounds like a tournament I'd probably attend if it were mirrored in California and maybe in the Midwest.

This thread was accidentally (?) archived; I spoke to one of the admins and he moved it back to the Announcements forum.

In case this confused any of you, let me just unequivocally state that this is still happening and many good teams have signed up to play in Cambridge.

Could you ask for a better Snowman Burning Day present?

PS: alternatively, if you don't recognize Snowman Burning Day, there's always Corn Dog Day or Great American Meat Out Day.

PPS: I should clarify that some part of UIUC is considering attending and that teams like Yale have expressed interest. Certain Ryan Westbrooks have intimated interest with the qualification that they probably won't have the money to fly out, but there's at least a pretty solid chance that legal fees from Wendy's vs. Long John Silver's will do the trick. In short, we expect a lot of teams to sign up in the next, like, two months; i just prefer not to build field lists that mostly consist of rumor. But consider the above teams rumor'd into attending.

I'm writing philosophy and science for this tournament. I've written all but around ten tossups, and I've made some serious inroads on bonuses. Since questions of this difficulty are harder to write well consistently, I want to start playtesting as early as possible. Once I'm done writing for our ACF Nationals packet, I'll start in earnest. Sound good?

Okay, we'll be playtesting chemistry tomorrow night, probably at around 8:00pm. Not everything from chemistry is done quite yet, but at least 14/14 should be. If time remains, we'll move on to some physics.

Apparently I was very confused when I posted this. Looking at the time, I think I thought it was Wednesday night, as Harvard practice is tonight. So playtesting will actually happen Thursday, not tonight.

Biology playtesting Tuesday night in #hibiology.

This tournament will be followed by MELD. Now there's no reason not to come!

EDIT: By Tuesday night I mean 8pm; sorry! Come one, come all. Someone's got to finish playtesting this tournament, and it might as well be me. (On that note, I think I'll be doing other science on Thursday.)

By the way, people should sign up for this tournament. No packet submission is required; there's no reason not to come. We're offering a field full of nationally competitive teams, including all four members of the superteam that won Chicago Open '08 (on four separate teams) as well as up-and-coming powers like Yale and RPI.

Don't worry if you don't have a full team; we have a few free agents interested in forming up for this.

It should be a great time; do come!

Remember other science playtesting! We'll be doing this tonight at 7pm in #hiothersci. Be there!

I should, by the way, especially thank people like Lily Chen and Matt Bollinger who have busy high school lives and who have to get up at six am and still stay up with me until ridiculous o'clock when we playtest. They make really good observations (including "that sentence makes no sense" or "what the fuck were you thinking?") despite having only a limited familiarity with this canon; they're being troopers. I think Mike means he wants to playtest history or old-timey radio or something. But if you do want to throw biology in with the other science tonight, I'll probably be around.

I think what he meant was "have the people writing lit to playtest lit and writing history to playtest history and..." rather than "have your fellow writers playtest your science."

Yeah, that's definitely what I met--I see if you interpreted it how Andy interpreted it originally, I come off as a douche who doesn't like playtesting. Not at all! I'd just like to playtest something I can actually offer good feedback on (Bruce also playtests his stuff).
