Rancho Bernardo's in. In all probability, we'll be sending one team. It's looking like that team will involve only one player... are there any discounts for that?

The current field is:

Rancho Bernardo (1)
Torrey Pines (1)
La Jolla (3)
Santa Monica (3)
Polytechnic (1)
Arcadia (3)

We would like to conduct timed rounds, so we are offering an additional -$5 discount for each timer. In addition, we are still looking for more experienced moderators, so the moderator discount has been increased to -$20.

We want your teams to come so please sign up early! I think we have been good hosts in the past and there is no parking fee so you save $10 for each car you bring.

Why the change? I'd prefer it if the rounds were untimed, because the number of questions read during a timed round in a SoCal tournament is going to vary a lot. Like, A LOT. I don't know, maybe Caltech has a lot of pretty awesome readers, but seeing as you guys are still looking for "more experienced moderators" and considering that some of the "experienced moderators" you pick up might not actually read clearly and quickly at the same time, I think it would be a good idea to keep it 20/20 untimed.

Just my 2 cents, feel free to point out that I'm wrong and there's a very good reason for having timed rounds.

At last year's Technophobia, if I remember correctly, they tried doing timed rounds. Instead, they fell short on timers, and in the end, timers were not used at all.
However, the room I was in used a timer for the first round, causing some confusion.

Anyways, I agree that timed rounds are a bad idea.
As long as moderators can read at a not-completely-snail's pace, half an hour per round on NAQT is not unreasonable.

Personally, the only advantage I see to timed rounds is that you play more tossups if you're lucky enough to have a solid moderator. Sadly, that's not always the case. The 20/20 format is just much more consistent...

I'm also in favor of doing untimed rounds, since the moderators at HSNCT will get through at least 20 tossup 90% of the time, anyway.

Since several people seem to feel strongly about this, we will not be doing timed rounds. Accordingly, there is no longer a timer discount.

We have room for 1 more team. please email Alan by Friday if you want that team to be your own! We will meet at 8AM in Baxter 25, not the lecture hall because it is in use during the morning. Because this room is a bit smaller than the normal lecture hall, but should hold almost everyone.

Unfortunately, Torrey Pines had to drop out at the last minute, so our final field is:

Rancho Bernardo (1)
Hart (1)
Polytechnic (1)
La Jolla (3)
Santa Monica (3)
Arcadia (3)
Edison (2)

Again, we will be meeting in Baxter 25 for registration, NOT the lecture hall as in the past. Furthermore, although the original post indicated parking in the California lot, there is also a closer parking lot accessible from the intersection of Del Mar Blvd and Michigan Avenue. Parking is still free. We hope to see everyone tomorrow!

La Jolla A took the round robin tournament undefeated, leaving Santa Monica A in second and Arcadia A in third. Noted accomplishments include an impressive play by the solo RB team and a fresh Hart team.
