Bad Negs
Bad Negs
Since the last thread on the subject disappeared and I recently heard a few bad negs...
We were looking through old questions, and these are the serious answers they gave:
"...FTP, name this ship that exploded in 1898, and was one of the main causes of the Spanish-American War"
-Alamo (for USS Maine)
"Tom Snark, Galatea Dunkel,..."
-Homeless Guy to Galaxy (for On the Road)
older one: "This president, born in 1800..."
John Adams (for Fillmore)
"This President was a Civil War commander..."
Clark (for Garfield)

These aren't negs, but they should have been. From a middle school conference championship game.
Name the nationality that precedes each of the following words. Dressing --
"Ah, shoot...French?" (correct)
Name the fraction that is not equivalent to the other 3. 6/9, 13/39 --
"Dang it! Uh...13/39?" (correct)

i remember getting double negs in practice quite a few times, one of was describing three counties that split away from an original state, me, thinking of Delaware in relation to Pennsylvania, buzzed in with Delaware, and then with Pennsylavania. the answer turned out to be Tennessee, which supposedly used to be part of North Carolina or sumthin.
needless to say, i was the object of mockery for some time after that

At NAQT SCT last year-
blah blah blah, something about cutting off her hair-
<I buzz>: Rosie O'Donnell?
-to get super powers, blah blah blah...
The answer was Wonder Woman.

Believe it or not, I've actually negged a question exactly like that one (same country same answer). Stupid world capital questions...bigtrain wrote:Today in practice:
Blah blah blah (something about unions, I wasn't really paying attention)....identify this Central American country with capital at Tegu:buzz:
Me: Nicaragua
This resulted in the captain smacking me with a book just before I could grab it to smack myself.
Oh yea, just to add to Alex's original post, some more classic negs from me include:
Jesus Christ Superstar for Dr. Faustis
"This Biological phylum has a long notochord <buzz>"
me: Vertebrata!
me: *slams buzzer* <censored>
other team: VERTEBRATES!
me: ...damn
Of course, the answer was Chordata, but I think that was a round against an easier team so it wasn't exactly detrimental to our score.
Ok, more from Eddie (origin of most negs in alex's post)
This place, where the Parthenon <buzz>
Eddie: FORUM!
First discussed in blah blah blah, this BIBLICAL CITY saw the birth of <buzz>
Eddie: Pittsburgh
For a quick ten points, identify the country that owns Greenland.
Eddie, after waiting a few seconds: GREENLAND!
Identify the MOUNTAIN PASS that separates France from Spain.
Eddie: English Channel
Hmm, some other funny ones from practice.
Last year, sometimes when the answer was Whistler we'd buzz in and just whistle (ha ha ha stupid i know).
Question: (after my prac team negs early) Name the painter of American Gothic. <BUZZ>
Paul: *whistles*
Alex, Jay, and Steven: *knock on desk* *laugh hysterically*
Well that's all for now, more when I think of them or as Eddie is actually allowed to play at practice.

Answer: "Plan 9 From Outer Space"
The clues about the cross-dressing director, Swedish wrestler, and Bella Lugosi made it clearer that this in fact was not Mel Gibson's film.

Hmmm... some of my best from my playing days, before I started coaching...
"For 10 points, identify the term for the surgical removal of the uterus..."
-Me - Tracheotomy... OH CRAP (slamming my head down on the desk)...
Last year at Ann B. Davis Trash Tournament...
"For 10 points, identify this children's show, nominated for numerous awards..."
- ME - "America's Most Wanted"
One of my brighter moments, talking to a teammate...
"Hey Mike, how the hell do you simplify the square root of 64?"
- to which Mike looked at me, turned beat red and had to walk away he was laughing so hard...
... blah blah, fought against the forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra here...
-ME- El Alamein...
I have plenty more saved up on my other computer, we used to write down the dumbest answers and add them to a list that we printed and took with us to nationals every year...
And Richard, quit making fun of Zach... the two times we played you last year he had plenty more answers to give than you did... in fact, I think you buzzed in a total of like 2 times at Copley....
I'll look up some of the better ones and post them later.

One more I forgot, that won me the Moron Award at the ABD @ UM.
The question said John Wooden put this on the walls at UCLA to inspire players like Lew Alcindor, among others...
For whatever reason I buzzed in with "The Pillars of Islam"... something in my head said, Alcindor is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar... and Islam clicked for some reason, even though that is horribly wrong anyways....
the real answer: The Pyramid/Triangle of Success (or something to that effect)

In any case, I really don't smack those two nearly as much as they claim. Well maybe I do, but they really deserve it.

I think a link to UPitt's compendium is in order here.
http://www.pitt.edu/~mld6/neg.htm
Plus some priceless ones, (not by me) from PACE over the last few years that I remember
Pikachu for Emil Durkheim
Bob Hope for Kim Jong Il
cervix for iris (this question was very trickily written, though)
UPitt's collection takes the cake though. Especially the one about Philippi.

One of the best I've seen from PACE was pimp for silverback.
My sophomore year, one of my teammates buzzed in after mentions of being a Dancer before WWI and answered Gertrude Stein. The correct answer was Mata Hari . . .
Edit: Now I see it on the Pitt neg list credited to a Michigan tourney . . . I swore it was on the board at the end of the NSC 2 or 3 years ago.

A few people said that, yet the explanation for why it wasn't that tricky also makes the neg much funnier.solonqb wrote:cervix for iris (this question was very trickily written, though)
Well before the point where two different rooms negged with "cervix," the question had mentioned its wide variety of COLORS across individuals.

I believe my answer was Goerge Orwell's War of the Worlds. Anyways, this was in a Quizbowl Chatroom set up by Michael last night that lasted until near 2 in the morning in which we typed in our answers. I'd like to think that my tiredness and the lack of time to think about our answers due to the extra time it takes to type them, I would have said "Orson Well's reading of War of the Worlds."George Orwell for War of the Worlds
I really love answering questions because of the knowledge I gained from those little passages they have during the state's standardized tests for language skills. I knew the Maryland State Assessment was good for something other than verifying literacy.

From the UIUC Earlybird Tournament yesterday: "'The 'Cross of Gold' Speech' by William Cullen Bryant... er... no... Jennin..."
The circumstances of this neg make it worse, since it was taken after a good buzz on a "'Cross of Gold' speech" tossup which was, as it happened, the final question of a very close (i.e. very probably decided by this tossup) semifinal match. It was a shame to see a match decided like that... but I guess these things happen.

No. You gave that answer at like 10:30, don't try to make excuses. Besides, I think I got more negs than you ;-)I believe my answer was Goerge Orwell's War of the Worlds. The fishing line and the Mona Lisa were mine.
However, the fishing line I protest because I buzzed in at "monel metal" which is in real life a fishing line material. I buzzed in on that because i thought it would be extremely funny to possibly get a question right after like three words...lol And, I was the one to get the right answer: dog tags, afterwards. Well, anyways, some answers were pretty funny

Last week during practice, there was a clue that opened up how this person was listed as the fourth most annoying person in the country according to some poll, and I sort of misfired and guessed the pets.com dog, but it turned out to be Miss Cleo. Whoops.
Oh, and it didn't help that the reader was laughing uncontrollably throughout the entire question.

Yeah, but if this player had decided to do what any well trained player should do...just give the last name....rather than trying to show off and fit every little detail into the answer, then the team might have won.ImmaculateDeception wrote:From the UIUC Earlybird Tournament yesterday: "'The 'Cross of Gold' Speech' by William Cullen Bryant... er... no... Oh, certainly; I'm not saying it wasn't 100% the player's fault for answering like that, though the answer was "'Cross of Gold' speech," so there wasn't any last name to be given, as such. I don't know whether they were trying to show off, or weren't absolutely sure what the question was on and wanted to blitz, or what. It was just a shame to see a very well-played match end like that for any reason, that's all. I was moderating this match, and I gave out the neg without hesitation; pity for my fellow creatures isn't one of my virtues, I'm afraid, when it conflicts with justice.Admiral wrote:Yeah, but if this player had decided to do what any well trained player should do...just give the last name....rather than trying to show off and fit every little detail into the answer, then the team might have won.ImmaculateDeception wrote:From the UIUC Earlybird Tournament yesterday: "'The 'Cross of Gold' Speech' by William Cullen Bryant... er... no... I used to always tell my players, on an early buzz, give the creator/creation...I think it's the mark of a good player to know where the question is going, but not yet know exactly if it is the person or the speech. Good for you to nail him/her so fast......."Truth, pity, and the American Way" went out in the 1960s.
If I were on this person's team though, I would have made him/her run along the bus all the way home.
