High School Lit Singles Tourney (after NTV, 12/19/2009)

Post by Dan-Don »

Hey there! Do you think that you’re the best literature player in Illinois? Then prove it at VIOLATEDD 2009!

VIOLATEDD [Very Intellectual Open Literature Affair Totally Edited by Dan-Don] is all-literature singles set being produced by Dan Donohue (Arlington Heights Home for Academics, ’10) and Lloyd Sy (Auburn, ’12) to be played at New Trier High School immediately after the conclusion of New Trier’s Varsity tournament (ANTACID) on December 19th, 2009.

QUESTIONS: Tossups only. They will be 6-7 lines in length (in 10-point TNR) and will feature power marks. Difficulty will be on the level of PACE NSC/ACF Fall, with the occasional tossup venturing into ACF Winter difficulty. Distribution will be:

-5/0 U.S. Lit (varied by time period, genre, movement, etc.)
-5/0 Brit Lit (varied by time period, genre, movement, etc.)
-5/0 European Lit (varied by location, time period, genre, movement, etc.)
-5/0 World, Ancient, or Other Literature (varied by location, time period, genre, movement, etc.)

REGISTRATION/CONTACT: Please register no later than Friday, December 11th with Dan Donohue ([email protected]). This is open, so anyone may play (including coaches, players, staffers, guys off the street, etc.). Please bring $15 in cash or check (made payable to Daniel Donohue) on the 19th. I don’t know exactly what the staffing situation will be like, but I’m going to tentatively say that we need readers and a statkeeper. Email if interested.

FORMAT: Exact format is to be determined based on field size and number of packets (also TBD). It will likely be round-robin followed by ACF final with everyone guaranteed a substantial number of matches. Matches will either be 10/0 or 20/0, and negs and 15-point, blind powers will be in effect. Everyone plays solo—no teams. I will make separate divisions for “current high school players” and “college players, coaches, moderators, hobos.”

WHY THIS IS BEING PRODUCED: As you may or may not know, a series of unfortunate disagreements with my admin and coach has left me team-less. However, I qualified for the 2010 PACE NSC playing solo as “Guy Off the Street” from “Team Hobo.” PACE is permitting me to play solo at the 2010 NSC, but I need money to get out there. This is where you come in. All the money from this tournament will go to the “Send Dan-Don to NSC Fund” and therefore be applied to airfare/hotel/tournament registration/rental car/etc. I promise you that your $15 will not be used for anything else. I am also seeking mirrors. If interested, please email me ([email protected]), and we’ll work something out.

FINAL FIELD:
Division I (Demigods): Ben Cohen, Jack Glerum, Jonah Greenthal, Matt Laird, Craig Messner, Greg Peterson, David Riley, and Mike Sorice
Division II (Mere Mortals): Andrew Deveau, Greg Dzuricsko, Kevin Malis, Sam Mulopulos, Jules Reich, Steve Server, Robert Volgman, Julia Wang, Nolan Winkler, and Marcel Youkhna.

STAFF: Dan Donohue, David Garb, Jeff Geringer, Alex Harrison, Charles Martin, Mr. Reinstein, Robert Sido, and Donald Taylor (stats)

This will be the final field. Format-wise, D1 will play 2 R.R. brackets of 4 then be rebracketed into 2 R.R. brackets of 4 (ties broken by PPG). D2 will be split into 2 R.R. brackets of 5. Then the bracket winners (record then PPG) will play a 1-game final, the bracket runners-up will play 1 game for 3rd place, and so on. We still need two more readers!

An official email will be sent out to everyone tonight, confirming your dinner orders/presence at the tournament. Staffers should also be on the lookout for an email with all the packets.

EDITS: Link to NTV, other stuffs, distro, field, staff

Let me know when you (and any other interested Auburn players) get an OK from Ms. Greene. After all, the entire Auburn team might want to stay for this when you live so far away.

If you can write this a week in advance, there'll be a strong field at GSAC that would love to play this. I can't speak for the hosts, but it seems like a large tournament + side event would be a great way to finish the semester.

That'd be super. I'll send you what I've written so far, and you can contribute as much as you can.

I would say that, given Graham's offer to write, there's a good chance this could be finished by that time. Unfortunately my other cowriter is in Paris for the week. I'll give you a more definitive answer in a few days.

Whatever. It will be in the realm of NSC, with some tossups being more like ACF Fall and some being more like ACF Regionals or Winter. It's hard to commit to a uniform difficulty, so I hope this is good enough.

Let's maintain perspective here. ACF Fall was appropriately easy for a college tournament, but still significantly harder than anything HSAPQ puts out. Dorman put up 21.7 ppb on ACF Fall and 26 ppb on HSAPQ set 9. I don't think we have to make a big deal out of this: the plan is to make it a harder-than-usual set of literature questions.

That said: please don't go crazy, guys. If you write something that you think is Regs difficulty, double and triple check to make sure it's not way harder than you think. To be honest, it would probably be best to keep the Regs difficulty questions to a minimum, or save them for the Final. You're all probably better writers than I am, so I'm not too worried.

I'm down.

Also, I think 5 American, 5 British, 5 European, and 5 World/Ancient makes more sense than what you've proposed. I'm playing regardless, but I'd rather have "what's currently accepted in the lit canon" than "what Dan likes", which it sort of seems like with all the Brit Lit and the 1 trash lit.

This should make for a fun day of quizbowl; thanks for running this.

5/0 Euro Lit and 5/0 World Lit, i think, could work quite well if contained within 5 rounds. Euro Lit is rich and plentiful with lots of wonderful things to ask about that aren't from the British Isles. The World Lit might suffer some exhaustion, but if we loosen up the strings on what's asked about, I'm sure we can get 25 questions out of South America (about 15 writers that are tossupable at this difficulty), Africa (about 10), Asia (pretty much Japan and India), and Ancient Lit (a good amount of classics and other old literature).

On another note, I'll be writing most of the BritLit for this tourney, and wanted to know what distro within the lit would be recommended. If we assume there'll be 6 BritLit questions, I think 2 novels/short stories, 1 poem, 1 play, and 2 writers would be good, with character/other questions being placed in their appropriate media. Other thoughts?

Given the likelihood that this will have a relatively high difficulty, I'm not even sure who from Auburn would be interested in playing in this, other than Zahed (probably) and I. If we're busing, and kids don't want to play, then we could run into some trouble? We'll have to bring this up to Ms. Greene.

Just gonna bump this. Despite Lloyd's absence, two 20/0 packets have been completed.

CURRENT FIELD: Abid Haseeb (pending approval from Auburn), Greg Peterson, David Riley, Jack Glerum, Jeremiah Monk (so he said in the Illinois thread...I'm assuming C-Dale is staying overnight anyways?), any other takers??

STAFF: David Garb, Jonah Greenthal, Lloyd Sy (pending), myself, Donald Taylor (stats), Robert Sido, any other takers??

Not really. 2 weeks ago, at IO, "Silent" Jeff "Jigsaw" Geringer told me that Andy Watkins would mirror it. I haven't heard anything else as yet, but sometimes Jeff says things that aren't true.

I should have posted this earlier, but you guys are probably all wondering about dinner....in the coming weeks, either I or Mr. Reinstein or Jonah will be sending you a menu from some Chinese place by New Trier. You'll place your order with us and repay Mr. Reinstein on the 19th. To get even more people interested, I also plan on sending out an email to the coaches of all teams registered for NTV once Jonah or Mr. Reinstein gets me their email addresses. Also, I got the official OK from my parents as well as PACE, so the whole hobo-going-to-NSC thing is on.

I can play this and check interest from my school. I don't know if my literature knowledge will be up to par with the field but should be a learning experience at least.

That's the spirit! Jonah or Mr. Reinstein: when do you anticipate NTV to end? If we post it on here, Robert (and any other non-NTV players can just join us for dinner and VIOLATEDD.)

Actually, Dr. Bardoe says that if I can find enough student interest, we might be able to go to NTV, assuming there's room left. Hopefully some students will want to come.

Here's info on that. I'm pretty sure Jonah still wants more teams, and it's gonna be a great set. (And I don't say that just because I'm helping edit it.)

Yeah, I want lots more teams. I can't provide an estimate for when the main tournament will be over, but perhaps Reinstein can. We will have 12.5 rounds (half a round used to break ties) and expect to use 10 for regular/playoff rounds and up to 2 for finals, ACF-style. The details will be figured out when we know how many teams we have.

Sam Mulopulos is coming from Latin as well.

Would you say this will be pretty work-based, or a mix of authors and works?

Noted. It will be a mix...we've done our best to vary everything by "type" (author, poet, poem, play, novel, short story, etc.)

NOOOOOO. In fact, through 3 rounds, there is not one common link. And I'm keepin' it that way (unless I get desperate for answer space).

edit: formatting

In old HSAPQ sets, I've seen things like "cats" and "authors with the surname Woolf/Wolfe/Wolf/etc."

Here are some specimen lit common links from Ike Jose's 2009 WoQ lit singles:
1.One work whose title contains this poetic form describes a man wanting to scratch humans to make them bleed, but then helping them so that they think he is a hero. In addition Lautreamont’s these of Maldoror, another poem with this form in its title begins “Out of the hills of Habersham,” while yet another states “I think I shall never see a billboard as lovely as a tree.” In addition to Ogden Nash’s one about “an Open Road,” and Sidney Lanier’s one about the Chattahoochee, this term appears in the title of a work that features “a barbaric yawp,” and it also appears in the titles of books about Thea Kronburg and Gary Gilmore. For ten points, Walt Whitman wrote of himself with what poetic form that belonged to an executioner in a Norman Mailer novel?
ANSWER: songs (accept chants before Habersham)

10.One character named after this fruit travels to South Africa with the title characters to observe the transit of Venus, meeting a preternatural talking Learned English Dog along the way, and that character relates his tale to Pitt and Pliny. In addition to the Reverend from Mason and Dixon, this fruit was part of a bough that "some officious fool broke” in Robert Browning's My Last Duchess and it "stands about the woodland ride, wearing white for Eastertide," as it "is hung with bloom along the bough," in Housman's Loveliest of Trees. This fruit titles a work in which Fiers dies after being abandoned by Yasha and Lopakhin purchases the titular estate from Ranevskya. For ten points identify this fruit that names an Orchard in a Chekov play.
ANSWER: cherry
