Early Season Poll

Post by jonah »

Dan-Don has graciously offered to conduct an early-season poll of Illinois teams. My ballot for the IHSSBCA Coaches' Poll, class AA, was as follows:
1. Auburn
2. Loyola
3. Carbondale
4. St. Ignatius
5. Naperville Central
6. Oak Park-River Forest
7. Barrington
8. Buffalo Grove
9. New Trier
10. Stevenson

That is not my ballot for the board poll; I just wanted to post it publicly. I was restricted to IHSA class AA teams, but rated my assessment of them strictly with respect to good quizbowl. I also submitted a partial class A ballot: 1. Lisle, 2. Litchfield, 3. Latin; I don't know if it will be used in the final compilation.

Allowing the inclusion of class A and non-IHSA teams, I submit the following ballot for the board poll:
1. Auburn
2. Loyola
3. Carbondale
4. St. Ignatius
5. Naperville Central
6. Oak Park-River Forest
7. Barrington
8. Buffalo Grove
9. Hobo
10. Lisle

It's that time of the year when the members of the IHSSBCA vote for their top-10. So I'm bringing back the Dan-Don poll! Same rules as last time. Anyone may rank his/her top ten teams from either class according to the standards of good quizbowl. The polls close close next Wednesday at 12:01 AM. I'll begin:

1. Auburn
2. Loyola
3. Carbondale
4. St. Ignatius
5. Lisle
6. Stevenson
7. Naperville Central
8. Barrington
9. Hobo
10. OPRF

EDIT: changed my mind about a few things

Nobody's seen Stevenson as a team yet and in the one tourney that Carbondale was at full-strength they won Ultima, going 1-1 against Ig and 1-0 against us.

Can the polls stay open until after next weekend? I haven't moderated a tournament yet, but I'll be at the Decembrist.

Carmel and Latin aren't stellar yet. But I think it's amazing that they could be the the next Viator in the way that they come out of the North-Metro League and start embracing good quizbowl. I hope we see a nationals appearance from them. Anyways, the results of the poll....

1. Auburn - 147
2. Loyola - 132
3. St. Ignatius - 116
4. C-Dale - 115
5. Stevenson - 75
6. Lisle - 69
7. OPRF - 52
8. Naperville Central - 38
9. New Trier - 31
10. BG - 24
11. Hobo 14
12. Barrington - 9
13. Carmel - 4
14. Latin - 1
14. Fremd -1

Honestly, I think there's a lot of parity at the top. Auburn seems to be a step ahead of the rest of the field for the time being, but I think that every team in the top four or five will beat every other at least once this season. I also think that these ranking will move around a bit as teams learn things at varying rates. Carbondale in particular already knows a lot and is learning more quickly.

Specific to the results of the poll, I think that Carbondale and Stevenson sort of got shafted. They haven't been to many events, so a lot of people seem to have forgotten about them. I know I have. But they both beat us at Ultima (Stevenson without Zach). When they start appearing again, they'll probably get more points in these sort of things.

That's impressive Kevin took you down, and yeah nobody's seen stevenson with their full team yet. It'll be interesting to see how much overlap Zach & Kevin have, or if Kevin is now leading them in scoring (possible, considering he was morning champ at solo while zach only made the desperation shot)

Yes. Kevin is good, particularly on lit. I don't think he'll have too much overlap with Zach, who, from what I've seen and heard, isn't really great on lit. In fact, I think Kevin studied over the summer with an eye to filling in Zach's holes. Anyway, we'll see at the Harvard Mirror if they deserve more respect. I think they probably do.

From when I played Kevin at solos (he won 10-6), I was very impressed with his breadth of knowledge (with a bit of depth) across subjects, but it seemed like he didn't have a subject area with a ton of depth. The afternoon round at solo seems pretty consistent with that.

I'm sure it'll develop over time, but right now I think he's going to pick up almost anything that gets to the last few clues, which results in a lot of huge wins over bad teams and is not as helpful against other top teams. But again, I haven't seen Zach play so it's hard to comment on them as a team.

Kevin basically single-handedly 30'd every single LIT/FA Bonus he had against us and wasn't near to as impressive anywhere else although still pretty good

I'd say this poll is a pretty good ranking of the teams thus far. I think the top 5 or 6 teams will all beat each other up all year, though. I'm looking forward to the Harvard Mirror. It'll let us know how we stack up against other teams when we are at full strength.

Also, Zach and I don't really overlap much. My strengths are the humanities whereas he's good at science and geography. Julia and I overlap a lot more; she's just as good of a FA/lit player as I am.

I'm really looking forward to NTV too, where Latin will be at (effectively) full strength for the first time, excluding a single match last Saturday. I look forward to seeing some of the better teams there that I haven't had the chance to see yet.

I think this might be the first year in my memory that Stevenson is not overrated. Kevin and Zach will combine to be a very beastly duo. But we shall see in two days.
