CATT V - (12/12/09) - Chattahoochee High School

Post by Rountree »

Chattahoochee High School is pleased to announce the 5th Annual CATT (Chattahoochee Academic Team Tournament).

Unlike previous years, the tournament will NOT feature split Junior Varsity and Varsity divisions. JV teams/players are, of course, still welcome to attend, but they will play on the same questions as the Varsity teams/players. The questions will be house-written by former and current members of the CHS Academic Team.

The tournament will be held on Saturday, December 12th, 2009 at Chattahoochee's campus in Johns Creek, GA (in the NE suburbs of Atlanta).

As in the past, we will likely follow a 2-part format for each game:
Part I = 18 2-3 sentence, pyramidal tossups worth 10 points each.
Part II = 12 3-5 sentence, pyramidal tossups worth 10 points each paired with 12 2-part bonuses worth up to 20 points.

Each team will play 5 or 6 preliminary rounds of divisional pool play. Then, depending on the field size and the number of moderators we have available, there will be either a 32-team single-elimination playoff or a rebracketed round robin playoff to determine final placements.

Trophies will go to the top 4 teams.

The cost will be $60 for one team (+ $50 for your 2nd team + $40 for your 3rd, or 4th, or 5th team = $150 for 3 teams, $190 for 4 teams, $230 for 5 teams.) You may enter up to 5 teams total.

If you are interested in attending or have any questions, please email [email protected].

Thanks. We think so too. There are a couple teams absent that we thought would come, but the breadth of the field more than makes up for them. We are really looking forward to an exciting day of competition as well.

You might be right, Joe. I don't really know about that. I do know that we have never had this many Varsity teams at our tournament before - we had 48 teams last year - so we are looking forward to hosting a tournament of this size. Hopefully, everyone will enjoy themselves.

I will post a final field in the next couple of days.

Also, we are open to mirrors of the CATT V. We would be happy to send any interested parties a round to look at. We can discuss cost via email.

Would it be possible for past CATT sets to be posted online? I think this might be helpful in increasing the number of mirrors of this tournament. I've heard good things about the 2007 version of CATT. I know I wanted to go last year but Beta Club's "quizbowl" competition had basically taken away all the available drivers (both for last year and this year).

Brief results are below. (An SQBS link to the stats should be posted by one of my players later on.)

We finished Round 11 (the Finals) around 3:55pm this afternoon; here is who took home the hardware:

Dorman A defeated Centennial to take the Championship
Dorman B defeated Alpharetta to take 3rd place

Quarterfinalists were Walton A, Hoover, Central Gwinnett A, and Danville A.

Congrats to all the teams, and thanks again for coming. We look forward to another great CATT next December.

This should be the other way around.

I'd like to thank Mr. Rountree for running a great tournament. The rounds ran efficiently, the readers were good, and the set was good, with many questions that I particularly enjoyed. Congratulations to Dorman on their victory.

Congrats to Coach Rountree and the Hooch folks for pulling off a very good tournament. Very strong in every regard. Running an event of that size in such a timely manner is an indication of just how competent the Hooch folks are.

William: you played very well all day I am sure, but your played very well against Brookwood-A in the playoffs. Congrats.

And...

Congrats to Dorman on their strong performance. I never cease to be amazed at how well Dorman's players play regardless of which team they are on or what grade they are in. Truly amazing.

Dorman's successes over the years give hope to players/coaches at schools that are just reguyolar high schools that draw from one typical geographic district with no particular high-level academic program or socioeconomic base.

William,

I apologize for my error; it was a long day and I simply made a mistake when I looked at the score-sheet. Congrats on finishing 3rd place! I am glad you enjoyed the tournament and the set. Good luck the rest of the year.

Mr. Barry,

Thank you for your kind words. We worked very hard to put on a quality event, and I think (with the exception of a few fires that needed to be put out as the tournament progressed) we accomplished that goal. I am glad you and your team enjoyed the competition.

Without a doubt, this was the best group of readers and workers we have ever had. I would like to thank any of them that read these boards. We could not have accomplished all that we did without your help. Again, thank you!

Here are the results of the CATT V

Prelims: http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org= ... =standings

Playoffs: http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org= ... =standings

Note: Alpharetta was awarded an extra point in the Playoffs so that their ppg would be higher than that of Dorman B. This was purely a way to correct SQBS and award Alpharetta for their 3rd place finish over Dorman B.

Some further notes on the SQBS links: it looks like, in the prelims, there were a couple teams (in the Blue Division) that played fewer rounds than the others; this is not the case. It was just a mistake on our part when we input the data. All 72 teams played 5 prelims games and all Divisions had 6 teams in them. Also, we have not entered the 3rd/4th place game yet, which is why Alpharetta and Dorman B have only 5 playoff games listed, instead of the 6 games that they actually played. We will try to correct these errors and repost the results. Please be patient as this is our first time using SQBS. Thanks!
