Lit/Fine Art Singles @ Chipola February 26 (CCCT)

Post by Jesus vs. Dragons »

A few players from Chipola had decided to write a litfine arts singles for our tournament on January 8-9, but with a strange football-throwing accident to one of our writers, we may have to move it back to CCCT. This set will be available for mirrors if anyone is interested.

Details
The target is to be a novice level, tossup only lit/fine arts set. We are aiming for 10 rounds worth of questions written in 10 point single spaced Calibri font. The tossups will not exceed 6 lines. Expect questions similar to those at Delta Burke or ACF Fall. If anyone has any questions, email me at ethan dot hewett [at] yahoo dot com.

Distribution
5/0 American Lit
4/0 British Lit (includes Irish and Scottish)
2/0 World Lit
2/0 Euro Lit (Includes Russia)
1/0 RMP
3/0 Visual Arts
3/0 Music/Composers/Operas

If anyone would like to assist in editing or freelance questions, it would be greatly appreciated.

I can certainly say I and maybe a couple other Snead players would play this if it were to be held at CCCT, and I'm sure Casey and some of his teammates would as well in addition to the other teams playing there.

I guess RMP would qualify as "philosophers, religious texts, and anything social science-y". Also, we are more than willing to have these questions mirrored, so if anyone is interested jusst let me (or Dallin) know.

I saw the RMP thing and wondered but I won't complain either since it will just be 1/0, I really look forward to playing this tournament. If it turns out to be doubles I will be looking for a partner.

EDIT: By playing I mean if this is held at CCCT

If it is at all possible, could I get an admin to change the date of this thread to February 26, or simply CCCT? Our tournament on the 8th will not produce enough interested parties to warrant using this whole set for possibly 5-6 people.

Since I am editing, I will simply change your font to whatever I want. Since it is you, I will change it to Wingdings.

I am thinking 5 bucks. This being the first iteration of our tournament, I don't want anyone to pay 10 + dollars for something and it not be of quality.

I'm not sure how many people from CCCT will want to play, but I imagine a good many, which poses me to ask if there will be any sort of a field cap for this or if you would end up doing some type of draft for a doubles event or something if there was over X number of people.

This is one of those things that we will have to decide when we get to that point. The plan is to have somewhere around 13 rounds, and that will be more than enough for the expected amount of people. If we get over 30, I will just do a draft for doubles.

You also gotta think about staff, dude. Right now we've got three confirmed staffers (you, me, Cody). You gotta set the cap by how many staff we can get.

PS if you're reading this, and are planning to be at CCCT but don't wanna play this, sign up to staff!

I'll ask my coach once we have our first practice if he'd be able to moderate it. I'm sure since most of our team will probably want to play it he wouldn't mind. I'll get back to you guys on that.

I don't think staffing is going to be that big of an issue. Right now I am worried about whether we will actually be able to get rooms to play it in. If it is in Mobile (which is where I have heard it is going to be at) I don't know how willing an inactive quizbowl community would be to keep the building open.

As far as I know they haven't announced either one, but all of the CC teams seem to have gotten some indication that CCCT may be in Mobile. I'd assume they'd be announcing locations pretty soon, since Sectionals are coming up and CCCT is roughly a month and a few days after Sectionals. Seems like I read somewhere they'd be announcing the location for ICT the same time they did CCCT.

I think the CCCT site is in serious flux right now. Right now I'm thinking the Motel 6 just off I-75 in Ocala. Or maybe we'll see y'all in Orlando for our ninth hosted tournament this year! Sigh.

Anyway, I always like playing lit questions, but I'll staff this, assuming I'm there.

I think I speak for Borglum, Ethan, Mr. Young, and basically everyone else in Florida when I say PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE NOT ORLANDO AGAIN
But seriously, I'm sure Chris and his team gets tired of hosting thirty tournaments a year and would love to get to travel for one.

Seriously. Thus far we've hosted every tournament we've played in this season.

Back to thread, I think I'll have a couple non-lit players (and maybe even past players) wherever the CCCT is who are experienced readers, so I think staffing will be fine.

Thank you for offering to help/recruit readers Borglum. These questions would be extremely boring for you, since you would simply answer them all in the first line.

Also, I do not care whether or not we play in Orlando. Every tournament you guys host is ran extremely well and while it does get boring to see the same places every trip, I know we will be in a good hotel, playing in a well ran tournament, with an experienced TD.

Thank you. At this time, I know Chipola will be able to supply at least 3-5 readers, with Borglum and anyone else with him, we should have around 10 readers.

Also, this set is open to be mirrored if anyone would like to take it. It is free of charge and I would like to try to get this to as many people as possible.

Hey,

As of right now, this is happening. We're looking at a 10 pm start time, probably a full or double RR, and then head home/to hotels hopefully sometime after midnight. As such, we are gonna need people to probably put in an extra five bucks or so for pizza, and I guess tell me any allergies or anything. Also, having written a good bit of the lit for this tournament at this point, this is not gonna be too easy (I think) for the Ahmad/Borglum type players, so I am completely fine with you two playing. Plus, if you guys staff, we'll have five staff and approximately four people playing. That being said, this tournament is not so hard that you have to be a lit/art/music player to get any question; the answer space is gonna be easy enough that anyone should be able to get 10-15 tossups a round. So sign up, people! If you're interested in registering for this tournament, shoot me an email at [email protected]. The field cap is about 24 (since this is in the same building as the CCCT and I think we can coerce some locals into reading if need be) and we're not even close to that right now.
Also, in your email, include any special dietary needs or preferences (lactose intolerance, vegan, have a pizza phobia, etc.) because the whole pizza thing is not set in stone and we could also get Chinese or Wendy's or something. I'll get a final fee number (registration will be $5 for sure, but I'll figure out how much to have people put in for food once I figure out what we're getting) for you at some point before the 26th.

Thanks,
Dallin

EDIT: forgot to mention. We are still looking for mirrors of this! Anyone who is even slightly interested in this set, email me ([email protected])! It's free!!!

As ridiculous as this may sound, my status on playing this is in the air due to my coach deciding he wouldn't stay with us after the RR if we decided to play. If I can arrange something with Northeast (assuming some of their people play) or some other solution, I will definitely play this. I'll let you know something soon.

If worse comes to worse, the official hotel (if you guys stay at the hotel suggested by NAQT) is on my way home, so I could give 3-4 people a ride back to the hotel. Trust me, rides from the school to the hotel are not a problem.

Valencia will also have a van of folks staying, Mark (and anyone else in such a situation), so no worries.

Dallin, I'll pass along the info to the coaches who don't read this board (pretty much all of them!) so they can tell their players.

And Dallin wrote:

I would just like to let everyone know that Dallin bailed me out with writing this tournament. I thought I would be able to get most of it done during my Christmas break and I failed to do so. I am no longer an editor or writer for this, which means I may play, depending on whether or not Dallin uses my 13 tossups.

I'll believe I'll be staffing, so put me down for slot.

EDIT 2: field update 2/22, also I moved a bunch of people who had previously been in "expressed interest" to "registered" even if they haven't sent me an email to that effect. If anyone finds themselves in "registered" that isn't actually playing, please let me know. Registration will be open until ~9:00 pm on Friday.

Andrew Levin is playing, as is former player (and CCCT reader) Ian Mackenzie. Three other Valencia players are maybes, all wanting to see how they're doing at the end of Friday rounds. I think I can get them to commit one way or the other after a couple rounds Friday night (at least a couple hours before the lit tournament would begin); will that be acceptable? Ifigure that's enough time to adapt pizza orders.

Only dietary requirement is that Andrew keeps kosher, so let's make sure one pizza has no swine.

I'm still up for staffing, though I'm happy to club all the baby seals if my moderating is unneeded. Whatever works.

All the lit and art is done for this tournament as of right now. Still gotta knock out the music and the RMP. Remember to email me your registration! Also, can someone from Clemson email me about their semi-mirror of these questions so I know where to send them once I've got the set done?

This set is now finished, but I'm going to look over the hard copies and have Ethan take a look at them before I send them to you, Nick. Once we've got a finalized version, I'll send you a file containing all the packets and a master file that has all the questions uncombined and (mostly) sorted by category, since you're not planning on running a straight mirror.

Everybody else-- register! Also, mirror the set! I'll make it available for mirrors for any event until April 4th, so that includes every MUT site. Any MUT hosts who want to run a side event, this is a novice-level set (with, admittedly, a few outliers), but it's still (hopefully) challenging enough that even seasoned players don't get every question on the first line. And it's free!

PS-- 10 rounds is what I ended up with.

If Billy Beyer and Ahmad are playing, I'm playing! They may be seals, but not baby ones.

Jamie Delmolino, who's staffing CCCT, has said he'll staff this, so maybe I can be spared to play. But I'm at your disposal, Dallin.

We will have somewhere around 6 staffers from Chipola alone, so I think we will have plenty of staff. I volunteer to read the Borglum-Beyer match!
