Good luck to everyone at the several Turnabout sites this weekend. (It's on IS-87A, in case anyone who hasn't heard yet is curious.)

We didn't get as many high-quality sets as we hoped for, and two of the four editors had the nerve to become parents when they were supposed to be editing.

Woooo. I'm really hoping some of the freshmen get to play, they're pretty good and should be exposed to some good QB. (The JV NSC conference questions are Avery or QG or something)

Email Matt and Reinstein, but I would imagine so. They, Brad, Kristin, and I are the only people who have seen them besides whoever you showed them to.

You'd love to use those as samples and not rounds, right? Because those packets have been previewed to a lot of people, including all current members of Viator's team. (A team, as I know, loves the Fremd Varsity tourney.) And, yeah, the two of us had talked about writing Fremd or the North-Metro League next year, but I'm having misgivings about that now. I don't know.

I can give a better answer privately, but basically the packets from you and Jeff were the only ones of high enough quality for us to use without near-complete rewriting, and with half the editing crew busy with silly things like propagating the human species, we really didn't want to put together our second tournament in three weeks. Also, with an IS-A set, we got a better distribution and bonus format.

I was quietly impressed with what I saw today. There is a much larger mid-level of teams than I though there were, and there are many more teams that could make that leap into the major circuit in upcoming years. Lake Zurich, Bradley-Bourbannais, Fenwick, Oswego, and the Glenbards all have the capability to break into the next level. A lot of you are going to laugh at that statement, but I really believe that a ton of teams aren't far off and could make that jump with a little encouragement.

Re: Turnabout

Overall, I thought our Turnabout went off pretty well. Several coaches told me that the questions were the best their team has heard this season, though a few still grumbled about the format.

Complete stats will be forthcoming, though I have to say that I don't care to repeat the experience of running a 30-team tournament with bonus bouncebacks on SQBS. This turned out to be the only real hitch of the day as we could not get playoff rounds started until 2:00.

The saving grace was having some great moderators in 10 out of the 15 game rooms. I especially want to thank Dan-Don, Jeff Geringer, Greg Gauthier, Craig Messner, Mike Perovanovic, Sam Krc, Andrew Deveau, & Parth Joshi. You guys did an outstanding job and I hope you'll come back next year.

I'll throw out a few stats for the time being. Mark Taylor of St. Charles East was the morning's high scorer with 81 PPG.
8 teams made the playoffs: the 5 morning pool winners + 3 wildcards based on P/B. The 8 were seeded into 2 playoff brackets by P/B and then played a round robin.
The 8 playoff teams in order were:
1. Fenwick A (22.18)
2. Lake Zurich A (20.70)
3. Glenbard North (18.91)
4. Bradley-Bourbonnais A (18.33)
5. Wheaton North A (17.71)
6. Timothy Christian A (17.14)
7. Fenton (17.12)
8. St. Ignatius (16.86)

As Mr. Donohue has mentioned, Glenbard North defeated Bradley-Bourbonnais to clinch 3rd place and Lake Zurich beat Fenwick in a very close championship game that was decided on the final tossup.
Macho Man for Expediency wrote:but I really believe that a ton of teams aren't far off and could make that jump with a little encouragement.
I am in complete agreement with Jeff. I made a point of asking all the playoff coaches what other tournaments they planned on attending this year and sadly, most said just Fremd and/or Masonic. I am thinking that maybe IL needs another open tournament on an A-set, since all the coaches today seemed to respond very postively to the questions.

If anything like this is attempted, I feel that the field should be limited to a similar field strength. These games worked well because teams felt like they could compete in any game. If we were to throw the best teams into this mix, it could very well deter more teams from picking up this format.

Anticipation: Someone is going to say something like "If they don't want to get beat they shouldn't play quizbowl" or "If they get beat they should feel the need to study more." Yeah, it's great for us to sit on the boards and talk about how easy it is to make this jump, but anyone who would make such a judgment really doesn't have an accurate grasp of the situation. I really feel like a "minor league" of sorts would do wonders. If some of the mid-level teams had a sandbox beyond NTV, Kickoff, and Turnabout to get better at this format, I think it would work well in the long run. I don't think Fenwick or Lake Zurich, for example, will be the best team in the state next year, but if there was a way to continue to attract these teams to this format, it will continually increase the number of quality teams in our wonderful state.

I wasn't aware. I'm curious, now, though. Ignatius isn't sending a team to D&G, is it? (not that I'll be there anyway, it's just that he'd be playing against some relatively talented teams, I think)

He's a freshman, actually. And I don't think it's blasphemy exactly. But, I'll be real, I don't think he'd get a lot of TUs on Auburn. (That's coming next year, Abid.)

And I don't think they're going to D&G. Even if they were, Jared couldn't go, since that's on IS-87A, too, right?

Still active. We played them in a fall league in November and December, and we traded victories over two matches (they won in the "regular season," we returned the favor in the tournament). Sister John is retired from coaching, but is still active in moderating. She has helped us out with tournaments a number of times over the last two years (and will be here for the Greenville Turnabout Saturday). The new coach is a buddy of mine from student teaching days at SIUE, and is a class act. Last spring they thumped us during a community college tournament down here, but it's pretty clear this year's team is not as strong as last year's. They might still be on the black list, but I didn't stop to check before posting (SNICKER). I expect that if they do have a rough season, that trend won't continue. Scott won't let that happen.

Greenville Site Results (11 schools, 13 teams):

1- Carterville
2- Greenville
3- Williamsville
4- Springfield Southeast
Consolation - O'Fallon over Mt. Carmel
Other playoff teams: Carlinville, Gillespie

GREAT matches, lots of decent scores; my students won two matches on the last part of the last bonus, causing me to lose more hair and the remaining hair turned another shade to the gray. A pretty fair number of powers, and above all, lots of FUN was had by the students. That to me, was the most important part.
