Northwestern Wildcat XII

Post by indiaisasubcontinent7 »

Hello,

My name is Anant Shah, and I am the president of quizbowl at Northwestern University. I’m pleased to announce that Northwestern will be hosting its annual Wildcat tournament on Saturday, February 13th. The tournament will be held on the Evanston Campus, and the number of teams that play will be the driving factor as to in which building the tournament will be held. We plan on using a HSAPQ question set for the tournament.

Right now, we are wondering what sort of interest teams in the area would have in attending this event so that we can begin to look into booking the appropriate number of rooms for the tournament. It would be great if all of you could tell me how many teams your school would be interested in bringing to the tournament. Should you have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected], and I’ll get back to you promptly with that information.

Thanks, and hope to see you here for Wildcat XII!

Regular announcement for everyone: If you can moderate and are available, please tell me because chances are good that I'll need some moderating help.

I don't know if you're going to be able to get an HSAPQ set - there's only supposed to be 1 ACF set available in the spring, and both Loyburn (1/30) and NIU (2/6) have "claims" on it.

Here's the deal with the question set. It'll either be a mirror of questions used at a tournament in Georgia, or it'll be a HSAPQ set. At this point, it's more likely that it'll be a HSAPQ set, but I'll know for sure withing a few days.

Hey, for the record, I don't think an open team is a good idea at a regular-season varsity tourney. And I wonder how coaches will feel about it. But I'm going to take advantage of it if I can.

Depending on if I can arrange transportation, I may be able to attend as well. Maybe I can find a spot on the Wolfpack or become an honorary Catholic for the day. Or, maybe two Carbondalians would be enough for an official Carbondale team (I think our administration would be pretty relaxed about that, but one of the reasons I want to go is the fun of playing on a different team - I've been Carbondale my entire time playing scholar bowl).

I'm not very familiar with Chicago. Is it possible to get to the campus by mass transit (that is, to take a train from Carbondale and then travel a short distance by foot or taxi from a Chicago train station to the campus)?

My coach would have liked to go to Wildcat, but she did not file a field trip request. I don't want to speak for her, but I'm pretty certain she supports Ben's attendance and would be happy to see other players take the initiative in the same way.

If you're asking whether you can leave Carbondale on Saturday to get to the tournament, the answer is "not easily" (unless this tournament starts very late). Trains from Carbondale arrive into Union Station (at 9AM, 1:00PM, and 10:45PM--it's approximately a 5.5 hour trip), and then you'll need to travel to Northwestern. You can either pay a fairly hefty cab fare ($40-45 before tip, I would guess) or you can take a ~80 minute public transportation trip (several ways to do this, but most involve taking the Red Line to the Purple Line). Seems like in a best-case scenario you could catch a train at 3:15 AM or so, get to the tournament by 9:40 or so, and be out about $100 for the one-way trip. If you're able to travel in on Friday night and stay overnight somewhere, you could take one of the later trains and have a less hectic trip.

Catch me by AIM, Facebook, or email (decreasing order of preference) and I'll tell you how to make it work. You can probably stay overnight at my house if you want, which will make things a lot easier. If you don't stay overnight, one modification to Susan's plan that would probably save some time is taking the Metra UP-N line to Evanston. That's a lot faster than the El, plus saves you from having to walk across the Loop (though you have to walk across a bit of Evanston instead).

Kevin and Ben will be playing on separate teams. I forgot to mention this. The current field looks like this:

Loyola 2 (3)
Lisle 1
Fenton 1
North White 2
Dan Donahue 1
Rockford Auburn 2
Illini Bluffs 1
New Trier 1
Wolfpack of 1 1
Ben from Carbondale 1
Niles North 1

Total: 14-15 teams

Edit: Niles North has been added to field.
Edit: St. Ignatius and Wheaton have dropped from the field.

Here's all the information that people need to know about the tournament.

1. The tournament is being played on a HSAPQ set that has never been used.
2. This tournament will be held entirely in University Hall on the Evanston campus. Map : http://maps.northwestern.edu/#latlngz=4 ... &showlist=
3. Check in for the tournament starts at 830 am and will go until 915 am in room 102 in University Hall.
4. Game play will begin at 930.

Parking on campus can also be found on the map linked above.

Moderators that are coming in, please arrive at 815 so that a few particulars can be straightened out (Jonah, Matt, whoever else I may have forgotten).

Rockford Auburn 2
Illini Bluffs 1
New Trier 1
Wolfpack of 1 (Kevin Malis) 1
Niles North High 1
Ben Chametzky 1
Lisle 1
Robert Volgman 1

This makes the field 16 teams. I was given the impression that the St Ignatius team was gonna be one player not sponsored by Lisle, but as he hasn't emailed me, I have no idea if he's coming or not. In order to do my best to get an even number of teams to make everyone's life easier, Robert Volgman has been added to the number of teams. I strongly apologize for the confusion, but I will have a final field update hopefully by 5 pm today.

Robert Volgman, as you can see, you have been added to the list of teams. Respond to the email I sent you.

EDIT: St. Ignatius is the team causing all the confusion, not Lisle

Because the number of teams present now are 15, the goal will be to get the spare players from other teams to make up a 16th team. However, I won't know for sure until tomorrow when teams show up, so a 16th team will be made on the fly.
