-$5 per working buzzer system with eight lights
-$25 per new ACF school

As one of the editors for this year's regionals, I hope everyone will get a chance to enjoy this set. To register, please send me an email at [email protected], or post in this thread.

Ok, but there are other teams in the region besides VCU and Penn (both whom should be furiously writing a packet right about now).

Due to the TJ postponement, Whitman is now a one-man team.

If, as Matt Weiner mentioned, this event is moved to Sunday, St. Anselm's would like to field a team (though I'd have to work something out with the TD first).

Hey everyone,

This event has officially been moved to SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2010. It will still run at Maryland in Jimenez Hall, and all other information is the same. Wait for an announcement from the appropriate people about this, but last I heard it seemed likely that Maryland will also be the physical host to the postponed Mid-Atlantic SCT on Saturday, also in Jimenez (though it will still be organized and run by Mason - do not email me asking about Sectionals!).

We're hopeful that running both events on the same weekend at UMD will booth attendance for both - I know many area high school teams are attending TJ on Saturday, so hopefully some of them will also stop by the next day to enjoy ACF Regionals*. Teams interested in registering should email me at [email protected] (registering for Regionals, that is). Our current field is notably smaller than I think it should be, so be sure to let me know if you're coming:

VCU 2
Whitman
St. Anselm's

*This year, with 100% less starting 3 hours late as Maryland and Hunter B play pass the time with slapbowl Panda trivia!

To clarify, the SCT will still be held at Mason on the 20th at the same location as on the previously scheduled 6th of the Snowpacalypse Winter. I'm just confirming this (Unless Nina or Dr. Chuck spoke to you without telling me that it was held at UMD). Yes we are also interested in ACF Regionals at UMD on Sunday, put us down for 1 team and buzzer for the moment.

I've heard some rumblings to the contrary, particularly since all of the competent staff being brought in aside from the two of you seems to come from local people, many of whom are more local to College Park than Fairfax. Is there a problem with running it at Maryland?

NAQT has no strong feelings about the site of this tournament; either site would be fine with us. Zach and Chris: it's probably easier if we sort this out over email rather than posting on the board (for instance: re: notifying teams that had not yet planned to attend Regionals and thus have no reason to read this thread.)

Scratch that. The combined SCT/Regionals weekend at Maryland(ish) looks like it will be attracting a Penn team after all.

Was the entire visual tournament played at VCU's T-Party, and if not, is there any chance of a couple rounds of it being run during lunchtime or something?

I'd be extremely interested in playing this tournament if it is available. After SCT on Saturday may be a more convenient time to run it than during lunch, though.

Warning: Due to a probable absurd workload for the weekend, I can't go to two tournaments this weekend. Hence, I will only play regs if I am dead certain that we can field two teams at NAREN without me.

To whom should checks be made out?

Edit: also, what is the base fee of this tournament? The fee listed in this thread seems to contradict the normal ACF fee structure.

All ACF tournaments have a $120 base fee and offer a $50 high school discount, plus other possible discounts/penalties as per http://www.acf-quizbowl.com/documents/p ... b.php#fees. The original announcement is in error.

Well, too late now. I guess we'll just pay out of pocket. However, we still need to know what's up with the packet Matt wrote. If one of the editors could make a decision on that sometime soon, that'd be cool.

Sorry Aidan, I'm not sure why I didn't notice your question before, and I've been curled up in a cave with regionals packets for the past two days. Checks can be made out to MAQT - and you can certainly send the check in the mail next week rather than pay out of pocket.

Final Update:

Regionals will run on Sunday in Jimenez Hall. Please be in room 0301 (in the basement) by 8:30 for registration, with rounds commencing as quickly as possible after that. I recommend you park in Lot 1, which is free on the weekends.

The final field stands as:

VCU A
VCU B
St. Anselm's
Penn
NC State
CMU
George Mason
UMD House A
UMD House B

I'll hold off on a schedule to see if we can recruit any of the teams from Sectionals tomorrow to add to the field, but if it stays as is we'll likely do a full round robin and then collapse a house team and form playoff brackets.

Please email with any questions/concerns. See you Sunday!

Quick results:

1. Penn, clearing the field at 10-1, the one loss coming to CMU
2. St. Anselm's, 8-3, losses to Penn (twice) and VCU
3. VCU, something-something, some losses to people including St. Anselm's, Penn, and possibly CMU
4. CMU, maybe?

My recent conversation with Chris Ray in which he mentioned seeing GMU play implies that Zach Foster has attended at least one tournament.

The University of Pennsylvania (Eric Mukherjee, Chris White, Sid Chandrasekhar, and Sam. . . er, ??) indeed won this tournament by clearing the field, losing only to CMU. St Anselm's (Aidan Mehigan, Jacob Wasserman, Matt Bollinger) and VCU A (Evan Adams, George Berry, Andrew Alexander, Tommy Casalaspi) rounded out the top 3. CMU (Trevor Davis, , , ) finished 4th after a rather heroic effort by Trevor in the second round robin, going 4-1 in afternoon games and losing the last match to St. Anselm's by just a single question.

Top scorers were Trevor, Eric, Evan, Matt, and SteveJon Guth (UMD House), with Matt and Greg Tito (VCU B) leading the DII scorers.

Full stats will be posted soon - thanks to all the teams who came out for a thoroughly tough field.
Special thanks to Adam Fine, Jonathan Magin, Matt Weiner, and Jeff Amoros for an excellent job staffing.

Extra special thanks to SteveJon and Logan Anbinder, who played solo for about half of the tournament due multiple last-second drops from the field. I do not know too many people in their second year of quizbowl competition who would step right up without a second thought and solo it against this kind of field, let alone two on the same team. You guys are hardcore.
Hey, it would be cool if we could talk about this tournament and who actually did play at it and stuff.
Well, yeah, but I would also like to note how avowedly not pleased I am with George Mason for their pretty much inexcusable behavior. I am not even going to touch what happened yesterday, but how in the holy hell do you drop from a Sunday tournament via hsqb post late Saturday night, after disappearing early from a tournament you were allegedly hosting? By the time I got back from dinner - to which I proceeded directly since I'd been at "your" "tournament" for around 12 hours - it was of course even later, so your message didn't get through until a few hours from Sunday morning. Actually, my total notice for having to construct today's final schedule was a motherfuckingly hilarious 3 hours less than your tournament took to play. That's just messed up, and I would really hope you have some kind of reasonable explanation for it, beyond "we were so tired because our ineptitude caused SCT to become unstuck in time," because everyone else was tired because of that shit too. If this is not the case, you aren't providing any kind of explanation to that effect, and if it is the case, you aren't anywhere near contrite enough.

As a final testament to the most basic courtesies you failed to display, I will simply say that NC State's team had to suddenly drop the rest of their weekend and (presumably) their hotel reservations and drive 5 hours through the night yesterday for a real-life emergency; they still managed to let me know that they had to drop out of the field, hours before I found out about you guys.

On a more positive note...
I'd just like to thank the UMD for putting on a well-run tournament (that was under a mile from my house!). The moderators were excellent, and the staff proved capable of seamlessly making last minute adjustments.

Hey Chris, can we get the stats up soon? You can post them on scobo.net if you don't have webspace, but I'd really like to have those stats for an SCT/Regs comparison.

Hey, Chris Ray, if you want to be paid for this pretty cool tournament, I need you to act on the email I sent you last week.
