PRELIM: MELD (Mildly Experimental Literature Doubles) at UWO

Post by women, fire and dangerous things »

This is a preliminary announcement for Mildly Experimental Literature Doubles (MELD) to be held at the University of Western Ontario at some date TBA during the second semester. There will be 10-12 packets of 20 tossups, no bonuses, with powers and negs, all written by me. As the name indicates, it will be a doubles tournament (though I'm not wedded to that format).

It's mildly experimental in the sense that there will be canon-expanding answers, but in the form of a) things that expand the canon inwards (characters in canonical works, secondary works by canonical authors, etc.) and b) things that haven't been tossed up before, but which I think are important or just plain awesome.

The distribution will be divided equally among American/Canadian, British, Euro, and World; in terms of time period, it will probably skew towards the 20th and 21st centuries. I'm writing almost exclusively on works that I've read, so it'll also skew towards my literary tastes.

There will be book prizes galore, since my shelves are overflowing and in need of a good cleaning.

Details about fees and stuff are forthcoming, after I get a sense of how much interest there is.

Bumping the thread to note that this is going to take place on March 6. An official announcement is coming soon. This set is going to be awesome, and I encourage anyone who is interested in mirroring this (either as an event in itself or a side event) to contact me.

My trips to southern Ontario next semester will be SCT and a hopeful mirror of MUT. Since I (and some others) would have to be staff at a MUT mirror, a pairing of this as a side event would give me some buzzer time on the weekend. That being said, I pulled -7.5 PPG at RMP Fest, and I consider myself even worse at literature than RMP...

I kind of wanted to run this as an event unto itself, but if an Ontario MUT mirror happens, I'd be fine with appending it as a side event.

I'm not that great at literature outside of the fairly small subset of English Rennaisance Drama, but I'd love to play this.

Guelph has been discussing hosting MUT (we probably will, but we need to iron out some hitches with our booking department), so if you'd like to run this tournament that weekend, then that would be cool. If you want to make it stand alone that weekend, then we could certainly do a delayed MUT mirror, with permission from the editors.

Actually, I think playing MELD at the MUT mirror is more likely to attract more players to both, so I think it's a good idea for all concerned.

Count me as another mediocre lit player who still likes the sound of this.

I'm going to see how much interest there is from Waterloo, but we'll have at least one player at this.

Any details on fees and stuff? (Are you keeping this a doubles tournament?)

Michigan will be sending people to MUT at Guelph, and I'm pretty sure quite a lot of us will stick around for this.

The fee will be $5 per player. As for the format, I'll leave it up to the people at Guelph running it to decide how they want to do it, depending on how many players sign up. I think doubles would be the best format, though.

I figured as much. Waterloo will have at least two players for this.

I won't be playing Minnesota Undergrad, but I'm definitely interested in a literature doubles.

When is the deadline for a final confirmation for this event?

Assuming this is fine with the people at Guelph, this will be run similarly to how RMPFest II was - i.e. after MUT, whoever is interested can sign up and form teams.

On another note, even though the original announcement says I will be providing book prizes galore, it turns out UWO won't actually be there, so that's no longer happening.

Sorry about the late response. Yeah, that's fine with us. I'll double-check with Tom, and we'll have a more formal update with pricing, timing, field list and such after practice on Tuesday.

This will happen right after the conclusion of the MUT, and as mentioned above, doubles teams can be made from whoever is left and wants to play. The schedule formal will largely depend on how many teams we have, but I would expect some form of round robin, possibly followed by another round robin, as is the norm. Following Will's suggestion, the pricing for this event will be $5/person. The field list so far is:

Huma Zafar
Aaron Dos Remedios
Neil Walford
Ben Smith
Jeremy Levick
Chris Greenwood
Assorted Michigan players (5-6)
Assorted Ottawa players
Assorted Toronto players
Total: 11+

I only have five tossups left to write, so it's practically done. Anyone who's interested in mirroring it is welcome to message me.

We played this last night as a shootout after MCMNT, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Thanks for producing a great set!

I'll do my best to scavenge up some books as prizes for this, although they may or may not garner a "galore." I'll see what I can do.

If you are still interested in attending, please let me know. However, I'm sure that last minute registration won't be a problem at all.

This was an entertaining if somewhat oddball (I should talk, right?) set. The difficulty swings from question to question got a little disorienting, but it was definitely fun to play. The ending packet was probably way way too hard, but I guess you said it would be.

Sorry about that. I updated the thread with the confirmed location (MacKinnon building), and it is currently awaiting moderator approval and is not visible currently. Hopefully it will be back up soon. In the meantime, email me if you have any questions at all.

This set was fun. It was a nice mix of familiar and new stuff. A few questions jumped the gun to easy clues a little too fast, but there was also a lot of exciting stuff. Thanks for writing this.

Bumping this thread to note that Minnesota is still the only site that I've received a cheque from. If you represent a site other than Minnesota, you may want to get on that.
