Blue Hen XII (3/20/10) Newark, DE

Post by btressler »

Teams,

The details of this year's Blue Hen have been posted. The only difference from last year is that we have rooms reserved in Purnell.

Registration begins immediately. I am keeping the team list, you can send information to me.

Are there going to be caps on how many teams can register for this tournament? I'm sure we could bring anywhere from 4 to 6 of them, but we don't necessarily want to take somebody's place just because we're bringing a whole busload.

This is again the first day of tech week for the school play... I may bring a very underclassman version of our A team, otherwise I would be happy to assist with moderating again. I'll have a firmer commitment as we get slightly closer.

Obviously there's a limit to how many teams we can host for BHI (probably in the neighborhood of 35; much beyond that and we run out of adequate moderators and rooms).

For coaches in a similar situation, the best thing to do is register a socially acceptable number of teams (say 4 or 5). When you register, let us know that you are interested in bringing additional teams beyond what you have registered for. Once we get a rough idea how big the field is, we'll contact you back and let you know if there's room for more.

I suspect with the same question set running in Jersey on the same day, we will probably not have a problem with Caesar Rodney D and Charter F attending as they have in the past.

This tournament is in less than a week. The field (you can see it here) is not looking all that large, so there should still be some room to sign up as long as buzzers and volunteer moderators are brought.

Bill, i don't see any chance for us to have 6 teams as i originally hoped. But as a lot of kids have been starting up Spring sports, it's been hard to me to contact others, so i don't know if we're going to bring 4 or 5 teams now. But it will be either 4 or 5, for sure.

EDIT: clarity.

As your (friendly? ) competitor for teams on the same day, I have to say, it seems everyone registers later and later these days for no apparent reason, maybe coaches just procrastinate on paperwork, or think if they register they're absolutely prohibited from dropping a team or changing anything. Right now we only have 5-6 teams for the Chris Ray Open ourselves :'(

All it takes is for a team to be waitlisted a few times, and then they usually register earlier.

As you will note from past years, a typical Blue Hen involved 20-25 teams. Last year may have been an anomaly. We have had several adds in recent days.

I should be sending out final information by Wednesday after I consult with the ACC team members.

It's been my personal experience that students seem to be less organized and less able to speak as to their availability. When I started coaching (the days of mailing in entries), I tried to have decent information a month before the tournament. Now, we get to the week before the tournament, and I still hear (often after several e-mails with tournament dates), "There's a tournament this weekend? I'll need to check."

The following was just sent to team contacts:

Blue Hen participants:

We are looking forward to hosting the twelfth annual Blue Hen on Saturday.

Most details are as posted on the web (http://www.charterschool.org/clubs/acad ... eninfo.php) . Please note that we are starting this year in Purnell, which is not the same place as last year. We hope to start at 9:00.

http://maps.rdms.udel.edu/campusmapbasi ... us=central

Teams: please check this to make sure we have you listed with the correct number of teams, buzzers, and readers

http://www.charterschool.org/clubs/acad ... nfield.php

Directions: General driving directions are located here (click on Trabant, which is across the street from the tournament and is a lunch option):

http://admissions.udel.edu/visit/directions.shtml

If you are lost or late, you can call Rob's cell (given in email).

Parking: unfortunately free parking does not exist on campus. I often park in one of the garages, either Trabant or Center for the Arts. The max rate on Saturday is $4. There is also a visitor lot located on College Avenue across from the Library. If anyone is bringing a bus, we recommend that you get dropped off and send your bus back towards the football stadium.

Schedule: at this present time we expect around 24 teams. We will do 5 prelims, then lunch, another 3 rounds bracketed by record. Thus, every team is guaranteed eight rounds.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Correction for tomorrow:

The opening meeting will be located in Smith 120. Smith is the building located adjacent to Purnell, and 120 was the auditorium used two years ago.

I thought this was a well-run tournament; all the moderators we had were competent although one had some issues pronouncing things. It certainly wrapped up in a timely fashion, so kudos to UD and Mr. Tressler for that.

The set was okay, although I thought it was pretty representative of the problems a lot of people have with NAQT. Some things, without being too specific, I noticed included:
1. An over-reliance on Trash and Current Events. The last two tournaments I played were TJ and ZIGZAG, and I doubt I would have noticed the sheer abundance of these two categories if I hadn't played both those sets. I sometimes counted two trash tossups in a game, and there were some things I hope did not get included in the lit distribution instead of trash.
2. Some variance in difficulty. Some tossups were gettable by anybody at the giveaway; some others were gettable maybe by Matt Jackson and one other team.
3. Really odd cross-distribution bonuses that couldn't seem to make up their mind as to what, exactly, the hard part was; a lot of cross-distro bonuses suffered from this, and were generally easier than most bonuses centered on one specific category.
4. A few common links that could be misconstrued and just didn't seem very well thought-out. I understand and applaud the desire to make tossups extremely gettable by the end but there was some degree of ambiguity and some of the answers were almost too non-specific.

We had a good time, and the tournament was very well-run; my only qualm was that we had to be inside on such a beautiful day. Also, I want to congratulate CR for a great match today, I think that's the first time I've ever played a sudden death question, and quizbowl doesn't get any better than that.

Here's what I've got for the moment:

http://www.charterschool.org/clubs/acad ... dings.html

The statistician didn't group the teams by bracket, so I will try to get the original SQBS file and update that.

I too thought this set wasn't on par with the others we saw this year. There were things like two sentence tossups, an abundance of the [question type] kind, and several strange answer choices that probably went dead in every room because they would be much more appropriate for a college audience.

Historical note: two years ago we had an ice storm on tournament day. This year it was like seventy degrees.

As a triumvirate, Mark and Rob are two people I really like tournament directing with. If I knew we were going to get through ten packets by 4:30, I might have been tempted to add another round somehow. I do think I mis-bracketed a few teams and in particular Caesar Rodney's bracket ended up squeezing the middle, with the teams that ultimately ended up 2nd, 8th, 9th, and 10th.

Thanks to everyone for a low-stress day. I wish all tournaments would run like this.

Not that I disagree, but isn't the redacted part perhaps too specific for discussion of an NAQT set before it's cleared?

I do agree that some of the tossups had too much variance in difficulty but i thought there was good distribution of subject matter. however, i did have a problem with the [Nth] question of the [Nth] packet, as there was a misleading clue.

Mr Tressler,

For the Blake Game, Seth (AmenRa) had his stats switched with Trey (Quetzalcoatl) and I (Barack Obama) had my stats switched with Alexa (Amaterasu). The game should read: Quetzalcoatl: 3-4-1, AmenRa: 0-2-0, Barack Obama 0-1-0, Amaterasu: 0-0-0.

And in the game against Charter Charter Revolution my stats should read 0-2-1, rather than 0-1-1, as I negged question 4 and got question 6 and 7.

Thanks for getting these stats up quickly, Bill. We always appreciate your hard work, and that of the UD kids too (well, "kids," i guess, some of them are my age!). All things considered, it was a very well-run tournament and one of the best i've ever seen at UD in terms of readers and efficiency.

I couldn't agree with you more! That certainly was one of the most exciting game I have ever played in my four years of playing quizbowl. Even though luck played a large part in the outcome of the match, that type of match, regardless of the teams playing and the random outcome that resulted, is what quizbowl is really all about.

Let me also just add that I had a great time at this tournament, and that I thought it was very well run. Thank you, Mr. Tressler and the UD program, for hosting such a great event! In regards to the set, I thought it was about par with other NAQT sets of the past. It seems IS-86 continues to be a high note that NAQT has yet to be meet again.

I would like to thank UD and Tressler for putting on such a great tournament. I would also like to thank Matt Jackson for putting up such a great match against us in the playoff. The lead kept switching sides all the way up until Matt got the last three questions at the very end. That was probably the best round I have ever played in quizbowl.

The only complaint I had was about the questions. I remember there being:
3 trash tossups some rounds
quite a few questions were you could fraud the answers
packets having all the Lit tossups in the first half
bonuses that had no discernible hard part

These were atleast the things that stood out in my mind, but over all a good tournament!

I have made updates to the standings. I don't guarantee that rounds 6-8 are listed correctly. I didn't bother to try and figure those out. I found the game where Half Hollow Hills scored 359 points and fixed it.

You get 24 hours for any further corrections, and then it gets sent to NAQT.

I have good news, which is that I read IS-95 this Saturday and I thought it was about 50 times better than IS 86, and you are dead wrong about IS 86 being good, because it was absurdly hard and only a team that plays national-level tournaments could possibly be misled into thinking that set was anything else. The only flaw with IS-95 is that R. Hentzel decided to force us to use computational math tossups. That's right everyone, NAQT decided to partially change their mind about how we have permission to cut math without an explicit public announcement. Every NAQT State Championship that cut the math tossups apparently violated NAQT policies, and that is retarded. Just an FYI, everyone who read NAQT's announcements on this board and thought that meant they actually applied to all the tournaments they purported to.

I only see the "corrected" stuff on the "scoreboard" page of the results. All the other pages are still with the old data.

It was just pointed out to me that this wasn't resolved correctly. A tiebreaker is supposed to be three tossups. Sorry that we didn't emphasize that at the opening meeting.

Hm, were there three more TUs left after skipping the math questions? This is a rule i remember from a while ago but it's been a long time since i've seen an overtime game, and i've seen this rule enforced in the past but also ignored in the past as well. So i wasn't sure what to think.

Even if there weren't, the correct procedure is still to use a three-tossup tiebreaker (using extra tossups from previous packets as needed).

Yes there were three question left including the tiebreaking question used.

Not that I disagree, but isn't the redacted part perhaps too specific for discussion of an NAQT set before it's cleared?
Just fixed this one, and would appreciate more reports of specific problems by email.

I'll take the blame for that one. I should have covered it in the opening meeting.

During DWI two weeks before, (where packets had only 22 tossups) I told them to go into sudden death after the 20th tossup, so they probably followed my earlier instructions.
