BHSAT XIX (3/27/2010) at Yale (New Haven, CT)

Yale Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce that Bulldog High School Academic Tournament XIX (BHSAT) will take place this year on March 27, 2010. BHSAT annually features a number of top teams from around the country. As in the past, the questions will be written and edited by members of the Yale Quiz Bowl team according to mACF guidelines. Question difficulty will be suitable for teams preparing for national tournaments later on in the year or for those seeking a moderately challenging tournament.

Registration will begin at 8:30 AM with the first round beginning by 9:30 AM. Though it is difficult to know when exactly the tournament will end, it is safe to assume sometime in the early evening around 5 or 6PM. The tournament will be held on Yale's campus- the final building location will be sent out as the tournament day nears.

The fee schedule for the tournament is provided below. Please make checks payable to: Y. Student Academic Competitions (Please do NOT make checks out to Yale Student Academic Competitions).
Base fee: $90
Registration received by January 22, 2010: -$10 per team
Working buzzer system: -$5 each
Moderator: -$5 each
Additional teams: -$5 each
(-$5 second team, -$10 third team, etc.)
Minimum fee per team: $60

Electronic PDF copies of the questions are also available for $15 per set. Question orders sent by March 27, 2010 will be filled the day of the tournament.

There will be some computational math at this year's BHSAT. As for editors, we have a mix of last year's group and newer additions.

Which BFA is in the field, St. Albans or Fairfax? I would guess the latter, but I'm a bit shocked either way. Neither has competed outside Vermont before.

Any results? Stats? My kids attended with a parent, so, I am as curious as everyone else not in attendance.

It was a playoff double round robin between Seton Hall, Kellenberg, St. Joe's and Hunter in the top bracket, and in the end St. Joe's beat Kellenberg twice, who had beaten Hunter once and lost the other time. The final round of the double-round robin was essentially the final, for due to a lack of packets the team that was leading by one over the others was the auto-winner. I think that the final order was Hunter, St. Joe's, Kellenberg, and Seton Hall.

So Hunter was first with a 5-1 record in the playoffs, SJHS was second with a 4-2 record, but the two unknown match results between SHP and Kellenberg make 3rd & 4th place still unclear. Can anyone else help with those results? And, what of the remaining playoff brackets? Can anyone help?

Yes- they never showed up the day of the tournament.

After five prelim rounds in which teams were split into one of four brackets, each with six teams, teams were re-bracketed into brackets of four teams each for double round robin play. In the top playoff bracket, Hunter HS finished ahead of runner-up St. Joseph HS with only one close loss to Kellenberg A.

A shame about these playoffs brackets. Cheshire had one real loss on the day and it eliminated them from championship contention, even though their PPB was higher than their preliminary bracket champion in their grouping. They didn't lose another game in the afternoon, save for their "forfeit" where i assume they had to leave early or something. This is why rebracketing by selecting a team or two as "wildcard" qualifiers is nice, since it gives more teams like this a chance to play against the best teams at the tournament. As it was, Cheshire didn't play a single match against Hunter, Kellenberg, or St. Joseph's... and Seton Hall went 0-6 against them.

Yeah, maybe a crossover format where the top two, middle two, and bottom two in each group play the six teams from the other divisions in the same tier. That way the top 8 teams all play each other and no team is eliminated by a single loss. Takes the same number of packets and provides more variety of opponents.
