Triton Spring - MUT Mirror @ UCSD, 3/6/10

Post by Auroni »

Hey y'all,

UCSD Quizbowl will be hosting a mirror of the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament (MUT) on March 13th. We'd like to invite your school to come down.

Difficultly: The difficulty level should be around ACF Fall level, possibly a little bit harder, making this one of the most accessible tournaments of the year.

Eligibility: Graduate students CANNOT play under any circumstances, but if you want to come help us read we'll be offering a cool -$25 discount for readers. All undergrads and high school players should be fine.

Packets: Packet-submission is completely optional. Please see http://bit.ly/8SIrrn if you would like guidelines for contributing a packet for an additional discount.

Location: Somewhere on the UCSD campus; UCSD's reservations people like to keep the exact location secret for awhile for some reason. We'll post an announcement sometime the week before.

Fees: $100 per team
Buzzers: -$5/working set
Moderator: -$25/experienced, competent moderator.
Travel: -$15 for first team if 200-400 miles. If over 400 miles or bringing many teams, contact us to negotiate.

To Register: Email us at ucsdqb @ gmail . com to register with the number of teams that you are interested in bringing.

High Schools: We anticipate that this event, on a collegiate novice set, would be challenging but fun for several of the high schools in Southern California. We invite teams from the same high school to play together for half off the registration cost ($50 rather than $100). I'll also repost this announcement thread in the high school section, as we really want to draw several teams from there for this field.

Please let me know if we can expect your team to come and let me know if you have any questions. Hope to see you in sunny San Diego in March!

Field Update - 3/1

Confirmed:

1-2 UCLA, 2 buzzers
1 Torrey Pines, 1 buzzer
1 Irvine, 1 buzzer (?)
2 Claremont, 1 buzzer

Tentative:

1 Rancho Bernardo, 1 buzzer
La Jolla High School

Still a lot of room and a lot of time. Sign up, local high school teams!

College teams from all around the area are also encouraged to sign up as well. Anyone have contacts at Fresno State? UNLV? SDSU? Cal State Long Beach? Do any of the Bay Area teams want to make the trek down here? BYU or ASU have any interest? (Travel/financial hardship discounts can probably be negotiated - we prefer more quizbowl to less quizbowl).

This is, to my knowledge, the last collegiate level tournament currently scheduled on the West Coast until next year and likely the last novice-level tournament that might take place.

BYU apparently only has the budget to come to one tournament per semester so they won't be coming (or at least that's what they told Colin at Boise State).

Hey, we are going to delay this mirror even further (sorry teams!) Our university won't let us book rooms for this weekend and it is not feasible to squat in on a building on Saturday. Plus, for many schools, including ours, it is the weekend before finals. So this will likely take place in April on a free weekend; we'll get the weekend fixed rather soon.

If it is going to be on April 10th, UCI should have at least 1 (hopefully 2) teams to play.

you guys were the only ones to contact us, besides a vague indication of interest from Claremont. Hopefully more teams sign up, or we'll have to cancel this for good. I'll keep the field open until Thursday, April 8.

Hey, we're going to try moving this back one last time, but we want input from everyone about when's the best date for everyone. Please respond, since we really want to host this tournament. I'll own up to all the problems that we've had getting everyone together, but let's make this happen. Post away!

Would the 24th be good? We should be able to muster UCLA people to head down there (maybe 2 teams worth) on the 24th. Otherwise, earlier in the quarter is better, though maybe the weekend before HSNCT would be a good one (after AP exams for HSers, far enough before finals for everyone)

There is a CalTech NAQT tournament for high schoolers on the 24th. I do not know which schools are signed up for it, though.

Just to bump that this is, in fact, happening this Saturday. At the moment, we have 4 teams signed up:

UCLA
UCI A
UCI B
Claremont

So we can actually probably handle one more if there's anyone else (HS or College) who wants to play.

Claremont finished with an 11-1 record and 16.22 bonus conversion, well ahead of the 7-5 record for the UCLA-UCSD fusion-hybrid. Lead scorers were Alejandro from Claremont with 80.22 PPG, Tirth from UCLA with 60, and Vivek from the hybrid team with 55. Congrats to everyone and thanks to the teams that showed up, we got through 12 rounds with just two staffers in 7 hours with a 1 hours lunch break.
