Hey guys,

I'm a bit busy finishing this tournament, so I have been unresponsive to posts in this thread. If you posted something for me, I'll try to contact you privately about it in the next day or so.

Surprise last-minute volunteers to write questions would be lovely too.

It turns out that the Chris Romero team will not be happening. As a result, I am now a free agent for this.

Bergen Academies wishes to register two teams of (students plus me if needed). All told, 6-ish people, I think. I'll try to confirm if I see you in IRC tomorrow or Wednesday.

edit now that i'm in a place where i can read the thread without websense bitching at me: if there's room for 1 team from Bergen Academies, that'd be swell. if not, that's ok.

I have two teammates who want to play on the same team, so if anyone has two open slots contact them at [email protected] or [email protected].
EDIT: Neither are spectacular but they're both decent players and nice guys to be around.

I'm having trouble keeping track of the constant field changes myself. What I do know is that there is a hard cap of 20 teams and I will slice, dice, and concatenate teams however much it takes to get the field down to 20 teams.

Bruce has asked me to post this information:

"Spring Offensive will operate as scheduled, starting play one hour after HSNCT matches end, which would place the start time at approximately 7 PM Central. If you want to play, please show up to the elevator lobby in the Hyatt, and please bring any available moderators or laptops. We are desperate for both."

They did? I thought we didn't have a cross-bracket game to determine overall winners, so that there was a victorious team in each bracket.

The bag has been found.

Also, yes, there were crossover games, sorta. Each bracket had two 8-1 teams, so they played each other within the bracket on one half-packet (Magin/Jeff won one, "State College Plus" (Monica, Graham, David, me) won the other), then the final ended up being a half packet which Magin and Jeff won, 70ish to 5.

Good tournament, good fun. There were a few quirks (like should knowledge of the election of 1940 get you two tossups in consecutive rounds--Taft and Wilkie?), but other than that, very enjoyable. I think the decision to sacrifice bonuses for tossups was a good idea in terms of playability.

Yeah, with the exception of a few crazy questions and a few ones with pretty easy early clues, this set was a lot of fun to play. It was also very enjoyable to watch Jeff systematically destroy the questions.

I loved reading this and i'm glad people seemed to like to set. Magin and Hoppes were pretty great, but i was super impressed with Trevor Davis' knowledge as well.

If it's cleared (i guess it is?), i'll reveal which tossups i wrote.

The set is clear and has been sent to reputable packet archives for preservation.

I want to thank Shantanu Jha, Andrew Chrzanowski, Sandy Huang, Ahmad Ragab, Matt Bollinger, Brendan Byrne, and Trey Taralia for writing, and I want to thank NAQT for graciously giving me rooms and support.

But most of all I want to thank all of the people who agreed, at the last minute, to moderate or to donate their laptops. Without you this literally could not have happened.

Any chance that stats were retained for this? I realize that exigent circumstances made it difficult to cobble together a full staff and even locations for this, so I definitely understand if there isn't.

Okay, cool, if anybody wants to talk about them, i wrote the tossups on Anawrahta (apparently this was too hard? i thought he was important), Shah Jahan, Oda Nobunaga, First Bull Run (it was too easy, sorry), Gen. Meade, Red River Rebellion, Kim Il-Sung, Time of Troubles (transparent, i know), Preston Brooks beating Charles Sumner (i admit this might have been transparent but i really really really wanted to write this tossup a lot, sorry for those who couldn't pull off both names), and Caesar Rodney (of course).

Due to circumstances surrounding room mix-ups, I may or may not have all of the scoresheets. The ones that I did not enter but did manage to gather are with me.

I had a lot of fun at this, mostly as a result of getting to mess around in Hyatt suites with friends until 12:30. From what I could tell (with my 0/3/3 statline), the set was pretty darn good. Congratulations to Bruce and all the writers for a great side event that made my NAQT weekend even more fun.

I really enjoyed what I did play in this tournament. I didn't want to retire early, since Joe and I were just getting into a groove, but we had playoffs in the morning and I was feeling seriously drained. Good job on the set, Bruce. It was fun.

Very promptable! I know i made it hard by requiring both names but i thought it would be fun to see who could come up with it.

EDIT: To add, i think these sort of hard side-events should be full of questions like these, if anything for fun, but also to assess knowledge of things that are important but almost never asked about because they don't have perfect names. In the same time period, for example, one could have "John Brown's anti-slavery raid on Pottawatomie Creek" as an answer, or something like that ("for ten points, name this May 1856 event, in which an extreme northern abolitionist, along with his four sons, killed several pro-slavery men in a Kansas town"). These sorts of events are perfect for trying stuff out like that.

I've seen it described without actually using that term, so i wasn't aware that it was a name most people really used for it. But, okay, sure. Poor example i suppose.

In reading over the packets, I note that the Guatemala one claims that the CIA brought Jacobo Arbenz to power, when it was the other way around, as far as I know.

Heh. Well you could argue that overthrowing Arbenz was one of the things (along with overthrowing Mossadegh) that helped establish the CIA as powerful, but yeah, I meant to say that it was the opposite, the CIA removed Arbenz from power.

This tournament was pretty epic with crazy stuff like the Hui revolt. I was only a little sad at the hose on the Hulagu TU of him losing at Ain Jalut when it was Kitbuqa.
