PRELIMARY ANNOUNCEMENT: All-TV Set

Post by Cheynem »

Hey.

I'm writing a set of at least 10 packets of all TV tossups. There is no distribution. It is highly vanity. It will be quite hard, with tossups on TV shows or characters that you MAY NOT have heard of (although I'm certainly going to try to write on interesting stuff, not some 1950 sitcom that aired twice). In short, this is where I plan on putting some questions that are just too hard for regular trash tournaments.

In the spirit of good quizbowl and Matt Weiner, I will not write for this until all of my normal quizbowl responsibilities are completed and then I will split time between this and Fred's movie tournament. Since this is vanity in nature, I don't anticipate it taking that long to write (as opposed to Fred's, who being a better editor, is constructing a well distributed, cinematically important set).

Assuming that my "normal quizbowl responsibilities" are done around mid to late March, I could conceivably finish this set before the first wave of summer tournaments.

Knowing how Mike seems to skew TV-wise, I eagerly anticipate this set. I do hope for some interesting non-traditional answer choices. Also there is tons of shit you can't see outside of the museum of television that is "important" so I hope viewing accessibility doesn't interfere with asking about some of those things.

I'm working with Rob on a trashy sort of set for Minnesota Open next year (or for something), so this set is going to either be collapsed into that or appended as a side event for that, so as not to overlap answers too much.

BUMP AND UPDATE

I've taken the crazier ideas from this and written an Impossible Speedcheck version of it. It will be 12 packets of 20 three-line tossups. It doesn't really have a set distribution, but I have spread it around. It is somewhat sitcom-heavy. It's half done now and should even be finished by this weekend, so anyone who wants to play it or mirror it can have it (I don't care about money).

The questions are pretty hard, although they range from insane to important to pretty easy with hard lead-ins.

Would it be possible to have this played as a side tournament at CULT?

I'd be willing to have it at CULT, although for those not going to be there or who don't care, I'll have it with me at NSC in case people want a short, trashy side event.

If this does happen as a side event at NSC, is it more likely to take place Friday night or Saturday night?

If it does happen at NSC, it'll probably be somewhat ad hoc, as I have no control over facilities.

This set is now finished. I can't count, so it is actually 200 tossups (either 10 packets of 20 tossups, or as I imagine it, more of a shootout). Tossups are power marked and in some cases are 15 all the way through. As I've said, I'll bring it with me to NSC and if we end up running it there, so be it. If anyone else wants it, also so be it, and if people want it at CULT, again, fine.

I think, pending interest and time, this set will be placed as a shootout sometime Sunday after NSC. If this doesn't work for you and you want it and aren't planning on playing any other mirrors, e-mail me next week (when I get back from D.C.) and I'll send it to you.

We played it in two rooms as a shootout. I only have one room's full stats:

Rob Carson: 17/26/6
Chris Ray: 9/9/14
Eric Muhkerjee: 9/7/6
Michael P.: 2/2/4
Ike Jose: 4/1/0
Guy Tabachnick: 11/6/8
Jerry Vinokurov: 7/2/4
Charlie Dees: 4/4/15 (!)
Bernadette Spencer: 4/5/2
Andrew Lim: 7/5/2
Fred Morlan (came in very late): 0/1/0

In the other room, I think Matt Weiner dominated.

I second this. I was feeling pretty good after the first 200 and knew very few questions after that. However, this was extremely chill and really enjoyable, so I didn't mind not knowing a whole lot of questions towards the end. I could tell everyone in our room very much enjoyed themselves.

For whatever reason I was a lot better on the last 100 than the first 200. At least part of this is due to me not making so many hilariously bad negs.

Probably that's just the way it goes when the questions are about such wide-ranging and amazing topics.

I don't anticipate this played in any more official settings, so if you actually want to, talk specifically about it, and when I get a chance, I'll polish the whole thing up and send it to Mike for Wastebin if he wants it (I'm not sure what his policy is regarding side events).

EDIT: I forgot that this might be played at ANGST/ECSO. You can still talk about questions (I mean, if you're that pathetic to cheat, whatever). Also, someone let me know who I should send this to for those events.
