That's not really my decision, I don't think. I'll have to email Jerry about that. If such an event were to occur, I surely wouldn't be able to make it to direct stuff (and I'm not entirely sure about Lloyd).

EDIT: Never mind, it is my decision. I just need to figure out all the logistics behind this and then figure how to execute.

It'd be really great if I got feedback on this. Do people really want this? How many people could make such an event?

Also, Lloyd wouldn't be able to attend either, so I'm not sure how we'd go about directing and stuff.

Yeah I mean I am going to commute from my house so I could stay for a while but if this ends up running too late I may need to head out early.

Would this be a separate event from the Sunday evening event, or would it be the first part of a unified tournament? If the latter, wouldn't there be an issue with people who can't make it Friday evening?

Yeah, this is one of many issues I'm worried about here. I feel like the logistics behind the idea get really complicated. And I really, really wanted to be there when the questions got played. If that sacrifice has to be made because Sunday is just really inconvenient for people, then so be it. The issue with direction and money collection and such persists though.

Edit: Making sense is important.

It sounds like the Friday night thing is just people who can't make Sunday at all.

Yeah, this is my intention. The regular tournament should commence as scheduled for the people who can make it (and anyone who can make it should go to that rather than anything that happens on Friday).

Hmm. There are a variety of questions I have about this though.

1) Do you want that Friday event to still be "organized"? In other words, do you guys just wanna play stuff for fun or organize it and have a winner? Also, I'd be willing to offer a reduction in price ($5 or so, I would guess).
2) Do you want access to all the packets, or just some? I ask this because question security is obviously a big deal and I wouldn't want people to discuss answers or anything like that. At the same time, I'm unsure of whether we'd have enough packets. Say that the entirety of our packets are composed of Portion A and Portion B. If Friday people want to use Portion A, I'm not sure if the actual tournament could be used on just Portion B.
3) Would staffers still be available?
4) Would someone be able to do money collection and such for us, and just give us stuff on Sunday?

Also, what's the probability that people aren't great with logistics and won't realize that they have flights to catch on Sunday night until Sunday night, and subsequently back out of the Sunday event when they probably could have enjoyed the set Friday (not to mention it would mess with us being able to make nice, simply schedules)?

EDIT: I should also probably make it very clear that I'd definitely prefer people playing on Sunday than on Friday. If people absolutely cannot make it Sunday for flight reasons and such, then that's understandable. If they can make both but "just don't feel like playing Sunday" or something, I'll be kind of disappointed.

I believe that we can do this just in a small shootout setting, with alternating readers if an official staffer from the sunday event does not want to come to this. Question security is an understandable problem, but I don't know what could be done on that front other than to just assume good faith from everyone involved.

This sounds good to me. This will just be a small, sensible group anyway, I take it?

If question security is okay, you guys run this relatively autonomously (I can partition packets in a convenient way for you guys, perhaps, as long as it doesn't take an unreasonable amount of time), and someone can just collect money for us and transfer it to either Lloyd or me on Sunday, then this sounds reasonable.

Field

Teams

1) Rom Masrour and Andrew Hart
2) Eric Mukherjee and Evan
3) Charles Hang and Mike Perovanovic
4) Rob Carson and Kevin Koai
5) Ike Jose and David Garb
6) Brendan Byrne and Ray Luo
7) Eric Kwartler and Chris Romero
8) Richard Mason and John Lawrence
9) Mike Cheyne and Greg Peterson
10) Bernadette Spencer and Trevor Davis
11) Aaron Rosenberg and Chris Ray
12) Scot Putzig and Andy Kravis
13) Seth Teitler and Selene Koo
14) Mike Sorice and EMPTY
15) Matt Lafer and Ryan Westbrook
16) Stephen Liu and Jimmy Ready
17)
18)

I imagine we'll cap this at 18 teams and just start collapsing teams from there, unless more people sign up. I'm going to guess that slot 11 is completely empty.

Expressed Friday Interest:

Mike Bentley
Auroni Gupta
Jonathan Magin

People should sign up ASAP, though I imagine we'll get some more dropouts (and maybe unexpected people who want to play on Sunday night?).
Also, Jerry can't play; this leaves Kevin Koai without a teammate.

Free Agents/People Who Haven't Stated They're on a Team

Dan Donohue
Frank Firke
Ahmad Ragab
Robert Volgman
Gautam Kandlikar

Carsten Gehring (probably)

Jonah Greenthal
Kevin Malis
Matthew Hoffer-Hawlik
Andrew Deveau (maybe)
Trygve Meade
Zahed Haseeb
Abid Haseeb

Are you sure that the Dees, etc. team dropped? I saw a post from Jerry after his post dropping that team which asked where Charlie's questions were; I know Dees had some computer issues too, so do we know that Jerry didn't choose to give them some sort of additional dispensation?

Based on what Jerry said in a conversation I had with him, I think they submitted questions but still had to drop out for some reason.

Is there an established start time for this, or is it just going to be "whenever trash ends"? Will there be a break for dinner before, or is trash going to end early enough that we can play through this before a late dinner?

I emailed Marnold asking about what time CO Trash ends (I've never been to CO, and the idea of successive events is still kind of new to me), but he hasn't responded; do any of you have a rough idea?

Either way, though, unless the end time for that is kinda late (and I realllllly hope it isn't, because we'll be driving back that evening after Lully and I'm assuming it'll be pretty late as it is), I don't see why we shouldn't just play right away. I guess people should just try to bring some food for themselves, unless you guys have any non-significant-amount-of-time-consuming ideas.

That sounds really good in comparison to what I was expecting (which was like 6-7). Given that, at this point, we'll play a maximum of 14 rounds (though given we'll have 13 normal packets and the one packet of death, 12-13 rounds seems much more likely), and they're just 20 tossups, roughly 7-8 lines each, we shouldn't finish unbearably late, right? Eating dinner after Lully wouldn't be too bad.

EDIT: "late", not "early"

I responded in the CO Trash thread. Sorry I didn't email you. The only reason I hesitate about saying 5:30-ish is that the rooms situation has the potential to be SUCH a gigantic clusterfuck. Of course I think there's a pretty good chance everything will work out, but having that happen will require people to be alert about what rooms they're going to and responsible about getting there. Since this is a quizbowl tournament and those traits seem all-too rare, I'm worried things will be a complete mess.

Is there still interest in running this in some form on Friday night for people who can't make it on Sunday? We can use my team's hotel (maybe not necessarily the room) to play this if there's enough interest. We're staying at the Aloft Chicago O'Hare, 9700 Balmoral Avenue, Rosemont, Illinois 60018. I'd be looking to start this after dinner, so around 7 PM. Anyway, let me know if this is something you can attend.

It looks like need to drop from CO due to a family medical emergency, so Andrew is free. Sorry for being all last-minute about this, I was really looking forward to this tournament.

I probably should have done this a bit earlier, but it'd be nice if people were to inform me of whether they'll have buzzers in their possession during this, and how many they'll have.

Andrew Hart has accepted my offer to replace Chris White on his Sunday evening (?) fine arts team. I no longer can borrow either of UIC's buzzer systems, though. By the way, are any of the four events concerned about a lack of laptops? By Sunday night, some laptops might have to leave with their owners.

Wait, what? Are laptops really such a necessity (aside from my stats guy)? I mean, I assume some of my readers will be using their own laptops anyway, but I was under the assumption that people are okay with reading from a hard copy.

If you've got the hard copies ready to roll, then I can't see this being that big a deal.

I'll have mine on Sunday. Michigan buzzers will be sticking around, as well.
