Hey guys, I thought I would answer a few questions, and have some updates on the progress of this tournament.

As of 17 seconds ago I counted 166 questions written, with 134 more to go. This does not include any questions Shantanu is sitting on and has not pasted into the document, so we may have even less to write. Of those, I would say only 10% or so need some minor editing, with maybe 1-2% needing a full re-write.

Teams can still sign up. I encourage everyone to sign up. Please do so!
Also I need more moderators to sign up. Please o please sign up.

A few points of clarification that people have asked:

Q: So what's the distribution exactly?
A: More or Less:
25% American
25% British
25% European
7% Classics
7% Non-fiction
10% World
1% Fill in the Holes / Misc. TrAsH!

Q: Why shaft the world l--?
A: Its simple. With the current distribution of literature, you can expect someone absolutely marginal (to use someone Jerry expresses distaste for, not me) Oe Kenzaburo to come up every tournament. To offer an example, from my personal experience, I have spoken with native speakers who read stuff in Japanese quite a bit, and while they are aware of many authors that come up in quizbowl in the Japanese lit distribution, there are a lot (like Oe) who just they have no fucking idea about. Therefore, the reduction in world lit will 1) Limit these authors from coming up often and 2) make it so you can't really predict which world lit author is going to come up and 3) Ask about world lit that is potentially read.
Another thing to chew on: Its very possible to read a poem by say, Walter Landor, in an introductory British poetry course, while going through your entire college career and not having read anything by Oe Kenzaburo for a class. Given the how the opposite is actually true in quizbowl because you can go to ACF Fall and hear about Oe, but go to ACF Nats and not hear about Landor, its not hard to figure out why I'm doing this.

Q: I'm some dude who Ike doesn't think exists because I have read all novels by Oe (and Ousmane Sembene coincidentally), and I want my points!
A: The move on my part isn't about eliminating a certain topic unilaterally, its about getting people to get points for stuff they have more plausibly read.

Q [By an obnoxious dude who thinks they are better than a certain High School Quizbolwer, but who actually isn't]: You should have a 2:1 work to creator ratio.
A: We have all answer choices locked down, and the rest for me to do is to write the tossups, ditto Shantanu, therefore it doesn't look like we are changing all that much at this point. There have been a few people who have made some very thought-provoking suggestions such as adopting a pluralistic model of writing, and I appreciate it. If you have something relatively intelligent you want to talk about, do so by emailing me or posting in this thread.

Q: What's exactly in the non-fiction distribution?
A: I don't like spelling it out what's inside the box exactly, but remember Jerry's idea about asking about stuff that's not captured within the existing framework? Think like that. You can help yourself by looking at last year's lit tournament for CO, with tossups on The Art of War and Origin of Species to also get another element of what's inside the non-ficiton box.

Q: How hard is this tournament again?
A: Hard. If you are an average lit player, you will be able to get a lot of the tossups at the end guaranteed. There will be easy answers, a few medium, hard, harder, and a few "WTF" answers once in a while.

Q: How many packets are you making?
A: 300 divided by 20 is 15. However, it may be possible I will make 25 question rounds and settle for 12 packets. That depends on how many people sign up.

Q: I'm someone who isn't playing CO Lit and would like to assist / write a few questions.
A: We are ahead of schedule by I think two weeks, and have all answers planned out and our writing assignments have been split appropriately. That said, if you want to write a few tossups on whatever you like, send me an email, and maybe we can work something out.

Q: How awesome are the prizes and how many do you have?
A: After playing theannual book edition of super market sweep, in which you shove in as many books into a box as you can for five dollars two times in a row, I have so many that its likely the winning team will get like 4-5 books per a player. Oh and whatever I have leftover after I give prizes to the runner up and top scorers, I'd be willing to sell for a very cheap amount so I can make my 10 bucks back and more.

Q: Book Edition of Super Market Sweep?
A: Its the Case Western Reserve Annual Book Sale. They sell a lot of really good things over the course of the four days its on, but the last day is Super Market Sweep Day. It's pretty bad-ass. I'll make a post on HSQB next year in the off-topic section when it rolls around, but this year it was exactly one week before the HSNCT. Perhaps if it were the same weekend, people driving back from Chicago can catch the Discount Day on Monday or Super-Market Sweep Day on Tuesday.

Q: How are you writing this tournament?
A: By reading books first hand whenever possible, otherwise secondary sources. I will talk a lot about this in the discussion thread when this tournament is over.

Q: I have a question.
A: Sure, email me or post in this thread, and I will respond. I want people to get all the information they want to know about this tournament before they play it.

Hi everyone,

Double check to make sure your names are on the running list if you have formed a team. That will be my official list for when i devise up schedules. Due to limited resources, its very possible that if you aren't signed up on that list and don't tell me until tournament day, you will not be able to play.

Thanks

If the Sabrina/Ikshu team has indeed withdrawn, there are still 23 teams. I could presumably make a convenient 24th team with any other remaining free agents (e.g. Graham Moyer and/or Jeremy of Rutgers). Greg Peterson and Charles Hang have indeed combined, and I understand that Charlie Rosenthal and Eric Kwartler have done so likewise.

It appears to be more than "a bit wrong." If you're post in the logistics thread is correct, then you may want to keep track of who you have reading as well. I will restate that I can read for this event.

This set was officially finished three hours ago. Suck it, Minnesota! The rest of my work for this tournament will be planning it logistically, I can say that unless a cascade of rooms in one building opens up we are looking at a shootout format, despite my uber-high desire to want to do Round Robin. 24 teams is an excellent number, but if we do the shootout format I will desire is a multiple of four. Therefore, from this point out, if you want to play I'll put you on standby unless I get four teams (or four people playing by themselves, or three teams and I'll see what I can do the scrounge up a fourth) And if I do get four more teams to sign up, I express sincere doubt at finding 14 buzzers and and 14 rooms, (14 readers isn't that big of a deal since we could be using bye rounds to fill rooms) so plan for a shootout if that happens.

We don't get millions of hours in the summer to finish our sets, man.
