By the way, unless I hear from someone associated with the Dees team by midnight tonight, I will be dropping that team from the field. This is your final warning.

Hey guys,

My name's Matt Hoffer-Hawlik, a member of Yale QB and a potential staffer of CO. As i'm looking for alternative housing other than hotels (I am indeed a poor college student), I was wondering if anyone living in the Chicago area could put me up Sat. night, as I'll need to staff CO side events Sunday if I find I can come. Appreciate the generosity towards a poor stranger in advance!

I just want to point out that my intrepid co-editors have discovered numerous instances of Wikiplagiarism in a number of packets. I want it to be thoroughly understood that this is not acceptable; even if you're writing a science question on something and you have no idea how to do so, you absolutely may not just copy sentences out of Wikipedia. I will have more to say about this after the tournament, but suffice to say that I expect much, much better than this from teams attending Chicago Open.

edit: one more thing. For the love of all that is holy, look at what you are writing. I have seen several packets where I've had to stitch together pieces of sentences that look like they were just thrown onto the page without regard for any basic rules of grammar.

I'm sorry to announce that due to persistent failure to submit a packet and contact me despite repeated requests to do so, the team comprising Dees et al. has been dropped from Chicago Open.

So, yeah, I just won my flight, so I'm in. I got the go-ahead to see if I can put together a 15th team. So contact me if you want to play but don't have a team. I've heard from a few people Joe Hansen is one such person?

EDIT: 15th team apparently full with me, Hansen, Jacob Durst and Kirun Sankaran

I need to drop from Chicago Open due to a family medical emergency, so I guess my team has room for one more now. I am really really sorry about this.

I don't know where an appropriate place to post this is, but this seems as good as any other. I plan on staffing CO, CO Lit, and CO Trash, but because of the decision to do both days, I need a place to crash Saturday night. Does anyone have floor space available? Shoot me an e-mail if you do.

Simmons/Koai/Mason/Weiner wins game one.

Wrong. At 11:59 PM, Matt Weiner correctly answered tossup 21 to end the second game of the advantaged final and win CO.

CO Lit got called on account of darkness, basically - with 5 or 6 rounds (depending on the team) played out of 11 scheduled and the time in the 2:30-3:00 range, everybody decided that we would rather not try to finish the tourney. Trash and Fine Arts will proceed as scheduled.

I would like to officially congratulate The Gorilla Wrestles with the Superman (Matt Weiner, Kevin Koai, Dallas Simons, and Rich Mason) for their comeback win against The Solid Scholars (Jonathan Magin, Selene Koo, Seth Teitler, and Bruce Arthur). Both teams played tremendously well; TSS won the last game of the round-robin to gain a one-game advantage in the final, while TGWwtS punched their ticket by having a higher PPG than This Civilising Love of Death (Mike Sorice, Brendan Byrne, Charles Meigs, and Ray Luo), who finished third despite beating both finalists. The finals were very exciting and were, as already mentioned, decided by a tiebreaker when TGTwtS answered tossup 20 and converted 10 points on the bonus to even the score. Congratulations to both teams, and to all the players who made it through this Bataan death march of a tournament.

The logistics unfortunately really screwed us this year. Horrible Chicago weather caused serious delays for most teams in terms of getting to the tournament, and for some reason facilities people weren't there to unlock the rooms we had reserved. I don't know why we weren't given more rooms in Harper since no one but us was in the building all day; in any case, having teams run between buildings was likewise rather inconvenient. A great thanks to all the staff members who slogged through it with us. You guys were awesome and I'm sure I speak for the field when I say that we really appreciated your dedication. An official discussion thread is forthcoming once I get the United Airlines gate agent to actually assign me a seat on my now-delayed flight.

Again, congrats to the champions, the runners-up, and all the participants. I hope you enjoyed playing this tournament as much as I enjoyed editing it.

A facilities person who I know to be competent called me a few days ago in response to a phone message I left Saturday morning asking about getting rooms unlocked. She apologized profusely for the screw up, and we talked things over and have emailed back and forth a bit. It looks like what happened is that the university has once again changed which facilities office is in charge of room reservations in Harper over the summer. Unfortunately, the lady in the office where I put in the reservation request (the same office that was in charge of Harper summer reservations for the past two COs) did not tell me that they were no longer in charge of Harper summer reservations, nor did the lady who emailed me the reservation confirmation and claimed there were only 5 rooms available both days. Instead, the second lady cc'ed someone in the correct office on the email with the reservation confirmation. Unfortunately, that person has apparently been on vacation since early June (or he managed not to tell anyone in his office about CO). So, no one in the correct office realized that they needed to open up rooms for us on Saturday.

I believe CO should not have problems of this sort going forward. It's certainly possible that the university will decide to shut down most or all of Harper/Stuart for a summer, but if whoever is in charge of logistics next year makes a point of putting in a reservation with the correct office (and getting confirmation that they are in fact dealing with the correct office), then we should not have issues with getting rooms unlocked--we'll either get our reservation rejected out of hand, or we should be in good shape.

I intended for that last bit to be reassuring, but it may not have come out that way.
