Early Autumn Collegiate Novice at RIT 9/18

This is an announcement for a mirror of the ACF Early Collegiate Novice Tournament at Rochester Institute of Technology in Henrietta, New York on Saturday 9/18 at 10 AM in Building 9, (currently being renamed Gleason Hall) Room 2159 or the second floor of the Gordon Atrium. Parking is FREE and teams MAY park in reserved parking. Lot J is recommended.

NOTE: You will be entering Building 9/Gleason Hall on the SECOND floor. Signs will be posted to the meeting room.

More information will be posted soon including exact rooms and tournament format as I get more information from teams.

As per the editors, here are the eligibility rules:

1. All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below.
2. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.
3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.
4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor for special permission to play:
i. If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits).
ii. If you were ever on a playoff team at NAQT HSNCT or PACE NSC.
iii. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.
iv. If you have ever won any college tournament.
5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.

FEES and DISCOUNTS

+$15 per player
-$10 per player representing a team that has not participated in ACF or NAQT since 9/1/2008.
-$2.50 per player per buzzer system (maximum $10 discount)
-$2.50 per player per staff member (maximum $10 discount)
-$5 per player that represents a college or university that is outside of New York State or inside New York State and more than 200 miles from RIT as determined by Google Maps.
Minimum fee: $5 per player

while things are a little less than concrete because classes have just started up here, I'm sure Cornell will participate in some capacity. At this point, we're just not too sure how many teams we can bring, but 2-3 is a good bet

We're at lunch at RIT and will have a 4 team playoff bracket and 2 team consolation bracket. Starting at 2:15. No stats yet though.

Cornell A went 8-0 to win this tournament. Cornell C when 6-2 to finish 2nd. Cornell B, RIT, Rochester B and Rochester A finished third through sixth.

Congrats to individual top scorers Ian form Cornell C, Jeffrey from Cornell A, Neiman from Cornell A and J.D. from RIT.

To be fair, having a six team tournament with only 10 packets is not ideal. Had there been 12 packets, we could have done double round robin and still had two packets for a possible advantaged final. With 10, we had to do a round robin, followed by a 4/2 split and both Rochester teams happened to be in the 2.

I will say that this is the second time that at a tournament I've attended that Rochester has left once they found out they were in the consolation bracket. This past SCT at McMaster, after losing a playoff for the last top bracket slot, they left, throwing the schedule a little wacky.

All players have to be approved by me in order to play if they violated the eligibility conditions. I made broad approvals (especially of younger players) where hosts were pressed for teams. Anyone who has an issue with the way that I've been approving players to play this tournament should email me ([email protected]).

If those players weren't there, the rest of the Cornell team wouldn't be there due to driving.

Additionally, I got three e-mails today from local universities asking if I could move it back a few weeks, two days after hosting the tournament!

You should make sure that those teams know of the somewhat nearby Canadian mirror.

Ideally we would only have sent only freshmen, but renting a minivan was far too expensive since Cornell doesn't reimburse for car rentals in an capacity. That said, I was under the impression that these would be closer to ACF Fall level questions as opposed to something similar to high school level stuff, so it may have been ok for tejas, daniel and myself to attend.
