FAcT VI (10/23/10) at Yale (New Haven, CT)

Post by ThisIsMyUsername »

Greetings. Danila Kabotyanski and myself, the two new co-presidents of Yale Student Academic Competitions, are pleased to announce that the 6th annual Fall Academic Tournament (FAcT) will take place on Yale's campus on October 23, 2010. The tournament, which will be untimed, will be run on an NAQT A-level packet set using NAQT rules. The tournament will use IS-99A, for which we have geographic exclusivity for the states of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York.

Teams that finish in the top 15% of the field will automatically qualify for NAQT's HSNCT 2011 (High School National Championship Tournament).

Registration will begin at 8:30 AM with the first round beginning by 9:30 AM. Fees and registration information for the tournament are as follows:

Base fee: $80
Working buzzer system: -$10 each
Moderator: -$5 each
Additional teams: -$5 each
(i.e.: -$5 for a second team, -$10 for a third team, etc.)
Minimum fee per team: $60

Checks made out to Y. Student Academic Competitions (NOT Yale Student Academic Competitions) can be sent out to YSAC, P.O. Box 207092, New Haven, CT 06520 or given to us on the day of the tournament.

If you would like to register your high school or have any questions about FAcT, please e-mail both Danila and myself at [email protected] and [email protected], respectively.

Yale is also planning a mirror of the Dunbar Fall Tournament sometime earlier in the fall (tentative date is currently October 2nd; we will announce this officially soon) and our usual Bulldog High School Academic Tournament sometime in late March or early April.

We look forward to seeing you at any and all of these tournaments.

Charter is expressing a lot of interest in this tournament and would like to know what the maximum number of teams are we can register.

There is no maximum. You may register as many teams as you like.

Is there a field update, or are there still only 2 schools registered?

The field is definitely larger because Charter registered 6 teams for it.

Also are you going to do the computation or will you forgo it?

Sorry that I've been slow about updating it. I've done it just now. If you've sent me an e-mail, and for some reason you don't see your name up there, let me know.

"Will you be using the computational math questions in the set or will you remove them?" seems to be the question at hand.

Field has been updated as per the last e-mails I've received from coaches. If you thought you had registered, and you don't see your name up there, please let me know. If any of the information posted is wrong, please let me know. Also for any teams where there's a question mark or I have something like "2-3 teams", please let me know as soon as you can (before Monday midnight, ideally) exactly how many teams you're bringing, since I would like to make sure we have some number that works out. Thanks.

Where should we go on Saturday?

Just wanted to ask where the competition will be held (what building and room) so we know where to meet in the morning. Also, Thomaston will be able to provide a moderator.

Registration will be held in WLH (William L. Harkness Hall). For those of you who attended last year's FAcT and/or BHSAT, this is the same building as usual. If you're looking for parking, I recommend the Hendrie Hall parking lot. A map may be found at the bottom of this page: http://www.yale.edu/cbowl/driving.html, which has both WLH and the Parking lot marked (Hendrie parking lot is the one that has the arrow).

Are the Scores and/or links to the NAQT question packets we used going to be posted eventually?

Links almost certainly won't be posted to the questions, since NAQT always sells their questions after tournaments for practice purposes.

Brief results from Yale... The field wound up at 25 instead of 24. Five brackets of five prelims with top 12 teams advancing into two brackets of six with a final crossover. In the "Give you up" bracket, Kellenberg finished 5-0 (9-0 for the day at that point) while St. Joes A finished 4-1 (8-1 for the day). In the "Let you down" bracket, SHP finished 5-0 (9-0 for the day) and Cheshire finished 4-1 (8-1 for the day).

St. Joes A defeated Cheshire for 3rd place (score unknown). In the final, Kellenberg defeated SHP 355-335.

I can help with the SJHS-Cheshire 3rd place score: SJHS emerged victorious, 480-250, but the match was much closer than the final score suggests.

Thanks to the Yale Academic Team for hosting, and congratulations to Kellenberg, Seton Hall Prep, Saint Joe's and Cheshire, who all had excellent tournaments. Wish I could recall other specific results, but unfortunately I cannot. However, as a reader in the consolation bracket for the 2nd group of 12 teams, I can tell you that there were many competitive games and that the kids overall seemed to have a great time.
