Harvard Mirror at Whitman 11/13/10

Post by salmon of wisdom »

Walt Whitman High School, in Bethesda Maryland, will be hosting a mirror of the Harvard Fall tournament on November 13, 2010.

To register you can E-mail me at [email protected] or Mrs. Danis at [email protected]

Harvard promises that the tossups will be shorter than in previous iterations. Tossups will be capped at five lines of 10pt TNR (exceptions made for the final rounds, but even there questions won't exceed six to seven lines). Questions will be easier; the intention is for the set to be barely harder than a regular-difficulty tournament. The set will lack trash entirely, instead featuring 4/4 literature, 4/4 history, 4/4 science, 3/3 RMP, 3/3 fine arts, 1/1 social science, and 1/1 geography.

Registration starts at 8:00 A.M. and will include a skimpy breakfeast of juice and bagels.
The tournament will be run with preliminary brackets before lunch and then playoff brackets and consolation brackets after lunch.
Teams will be able to play all day, regardless of their standings after the preliminary rounds.

Cost: $65 for the first team and $55 for any subsequent teams.
-$10 per buzzer system
-$20 for qualified staffer
Miniumum fee: $40
Minimum field:12
Maximum field: 24

Field: 24/24
Centennial (5)
Magruder (2)
WJ (1)
Glenelg (1)
Gonzaga (1)
RM (2)
Maggie Walker (2)
Flowers High School (1)

Charter (5)
QO (1)

We'll think about it. We honestly just can't afford to go to as many competitions this year, so... yeah.

Charter is looking at attending this. Is there a team limit?

The tournament is capped at 24 teams, but if your asking about a limit on the number of teams per school, we don't have one, just nothing too ridiculous.

Yes its true. So I was gonna ask for 5-6 but I'm guessing that is considered ridiculous. We could always try for a Charter I =P

I wouldn't recommend even telling teams to not let it be ridiculous, take whatever teams you can get as quickly as possible, it's all money in the bank either way.

Charter, after checking our current numbers, I have decided that 6 teams would be O.K.

This tournament is now full with 24 teams registered. A waiting list will be made for any additional teams, but a field expansion is very unlikely.

Maybe you should expand the tournament cap to 28 or 30 like RM did on 10/30 (you already seem to have 28 teams registered).

We have looked in to expanding the tournament cap, but with the amount of competent moderators we have it seem very unlikely we will be able to.

For bracketing purposes, my availability for this tournament is doubtful and I believe Ophir's is very questionable. This means our team could very well be composed of the same kids that got 12.66 ppb on the Fall Novice Set (http://activities.tjhsst.edu/quizbowl/n ... l.html#t25). I'll keep you guys updated.

to be Favre-esque you would have to say that you were retiring from quizbowl permanently around 4 times XD

And you'd probably have to betray your team and go play for GDS or something.

You can have Eric Mukherjee to help you out with science for, like, 4 tossups before he goes and plays for someone else.

Sorry about the late notice, but, for bracketing purposes, GDS will once again be quite short-handed at this tournament with only one of our four usual A-team players in attendance (but that one is our best player, Daniel).

Urm, looking at the stats, I think Maggie Walker A was in the Mjollnir bracket, not the Nothung bracket.

That is true, but the files for the prelims were accidentally deleted and therefore we cannot change them. On another note we are having trouble posting stats for the playoffs so expect them on either Monday or Tuesday.

Play off stats are up:
http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org= ... =standings
(Note: Asgard and Valhalla were the top brackets)
Some teams have 6 games and that is because they chose to stay and play an optional final placement game.
