Turnabout @ Fenton HS - Certified Staffers Wanted

Post by MLaudermith »

On January 8, Fenton will again host the Chicago-area Turnabout Tournament. This year, the IHSSBCA is giving each host a $25 stipend per certified moderator used. I am more than happy to pass that largesse on to any certified moderators who want to help me out (plus a free lunch). To get certified, go to http://www.ihssbca.org. Since the only other tournament running that day in the general area is the Knights' Challenge at Auburn (Novice & F/S), a certain contingent of Illinois quizbowlers (Team IL hopefuls, perhaps) will have nothing to do that Saturday and may get into trouble if they don't come to Fenton.

Also, if last year's Turnabout taught me anything, it's that I really shouldn't be allowed near SQBS. If someone wants to take on the job of doing stats, you will have both my eternal gratitude and a substantially enlarged remuneration.

Anyone who is interested should contact me in the near future ([email protected]).

If my class prep is finished (I start teaching the following Monday), I'll do my best to make it.

Since Jonah volunteered first, the stats job is his, unless he wants to relinquish it to someone else.

Much thanks to everyone willing to come.

I definitely want you at Turnabout Craig. Getting certified is actually pretty easy. The test is open book. Try to get it done before Jan 8 so I can give you free money.

If Donald is available, I certainly relinquish it to him. If there's anyone else who explicitly wants to do stats, that's fine too.

The test is not hard. The difficulty is in hearing back about how you did. I submitted my test in June, and a player of mine submitted his in March, and neither of us have heard back about it since. Brad Fischer said that he has been waiting since approximately June 2008 for his results.

The above is absolutely true, and is something I've asked the IHSSBCA leadership to address several times. However, remember that getting performance-certified is now independent of being test-certified, so you can just print cards off the website and distribute them even if you haven't been told you passed the test.

If I come, I am doing stats. Anyone who objects, feel free to do so, but do not get your hopes up.

Whoa! I assume this is Sycamore High School, noted school-very-close-to-NIU. Can you send me their contact info so we can properly invite them to Huskie Bowl?

Well, this year's Turnabout turned out to be the most competitve I've hosted yet, and certainly the most surprising.
Some results:

1st - Wauconda A (Turnabout is the first tournament this team has ever attended)
2nd - Marian Central A
3rd - Glenbard North
4th - Wheaton North

I heard many compliments from coaches about the staffers. Compared to last year, today's Turnabout ran like a well-oiled machine and I can't thank my moderators enough: Jeff Geringer, Jonah Greenthal, Dan Donohue, Craig Messner, Mike Perovanovic, Nolan Winkler, Kevin Malis, Ben Carbery, Greg Dzuricsko, Greg Gauthier, David Vidal, Ulysses Capistran, & Marsha Einhorn (Lake Park). Also, special thanks to Donald Taylor who braves the elements and a 5-hour drive to work his magic with the stats. To everyone, your help was greatly appreciated.

Color me not as surprised. IIRC, it was 3 years ago that Wauconda MS jumped up and bit Barrington Station in the conference preliminary rounds of the Suburban Middle School Conference Tournament. That crop would now be juniors...
