ACF Regionals at UCF: March 5, 2011

Post by ValenciaQBowl »

UCF will be the Florida host of the ACF Regionals on Saturday, March 5, 2011, HOWEVER, this will now take place on Valencia CC's West Campus! Matches will be held in Building 9. We'll expect to register teams from 9-9:30ish and start soon after, but certainly by 9:45 a.m.

Valencia West Campus Map: http://valenciacc.edu/AboutUs/locations/west_campus.cfm

Packet Submission
Detailed packet submission information can be found in the main ACF Regionals thread. It is your responsibility to make sure you meet eligibility and packet submission requirements. Please see that thread for full information. However, since the majority of teams participating will be CCs full of brand-new players, few packets will be generated by teams at this site.

Base fee: $120
Buzzer systems: -$5 each
Staffers: -$10 each (up to two)
Laptop: -$5 each (max 1/team)
Travel: -$10 for every 200 mi. travelled

New to Quizbowl teams: -$75
Packet fees/discounts: see the main ACF Regionals thread.

Checks should be made payable to "University of Central Florida." Cash, of course, is happily accepted as well.

To register or express interest, please reply in this thread or e-mail me at cborglum at valenciacc dot edu.

You may safely assume that UCF itself will have 1-2 teams playing. I might be even be so bold as to say we could potentially have 3 if we continue to see an influx of interest in our nascent program.

Great! We'll be happy to see you.

Meantime, I've edited the announcement upthread to note that matches will take place in the UCF Student Union in the center of campus (in front of the big fountain). Unfortunately, the Union closes at 4:30, so I've moved registration to 9 am, with matches to begin at 9:30. Considering parking and other hassles at UCF, we'll need to order in for lunch in order to maximize the number of matches we can get in before 4:30, so we'll probably ask everyone to kick in $5/person for pizza.

Also, since we're ending that early, it's a fair bet that ad hoc arrangements for more packet playing at some beer-serving establishment will be made upon the official tournament's completion.

I'll try to get UCF folks to provide some nearby hotel info ASAP.

So the new strategy is to get Dallin drunk? I'm totally on board with this one.

Big news: though UCF is still nominally the host of the Florida site of ACF Regionals 2011, we'll now be holding the matches 15 miles west, at Valencia CC's West Campus. I've amended the original announcement to reflect this.

We were unable to work successfully with UCF's student clubs administration to reserve rooms elsewhere than their Student Union building, which was to close at 4:30, since the March 5 date falls during UCF's spring break. Especially now with teams coming from Alabama and Toronto, we want to ensure that the most possible rounds can be played, so moving to a location where we have no closing time was necessary.

I have every expectation that UCF's fledgling program will try to mirror a tournament on its actual campus next fall as they continue to get up and running. But for now running it at Valencia will ensure a smooth and familiar tournament experience for all teams.

Jorts, man--they do jorts at UCF. But we're sorry we'll miss you this time. If you do come to UCF for grad school, there will be a team in place.

Is it possible for South Carolina to still register for this regionals? We'll bring a buzzer system, and Bryn and myself will be available to read and whatnot.

Heck, yeah! We'll be happy to have y'all, Eric. I'll put you on the list for one team (I presume), and I'll definitely put you and Bryn to work. Shoot me an e-mail (cborglum at valenciacc dot edu) if you need any hotel suggestions, etc.

So we've had two teams jump into this in the last 24 hours: Lake Sumter CC and New College, neither of whom, I'm pretty certain, have ever played an ACF tournament, so that's good to see. I look forward to seeing everyone Saturday morning at 9:15ish in Building 9 on Valencia's West Campus.

South Carolina (Phong, Robert, Taylor) won this tournament, going 11-0 and beating Chipola (Dallin, Ashley) (9-2) in two games (one on the last toss-up, one comfortably) at the end. A good time seemed to have been had by all. Stats will be posted tomorrow.

I had a great time at this very well-run tournament, and just wanted to thank the moderators, scorekeepers, opponents, and especially Chris for making this the BEST. TOURNAMENT. EVER.

You must introduce me to their works, perhaps over a stromboli.

Congratulations to USC. Congratulations to Dallin, as well. But really, I would like to congratulate Toronto. It's totally awesome that you guys came to the Southeast to play a tournament. Sorry we couldn't make it.

I'll echo the props to Jordan and Andrew for coming from the Great White North to compete in our tournament. They're great guys, and we had a fine time having them around. I look forward to bringing three Valencia teams to Toronto for some tournament in the next 15 years (preferably in July).

Thanks for the congratulations and props (I will always accept props)! With such a well-run and enjoyable tournament and venue (and after-tournament), it was a real pleasure to attend and I highly recommend the Florida and Valencia experience to anyone in the future looking for good quizbowl with good people.
