TIT at Michigan (1/22/11)

Post by Ringil »

Terrapin Invitational Tournament XXIV
Saturday, January 22, 2011
University of Michigan- Ann Arbor

Questions:
The Maryland Academic Quiz Team is pleased to announcement the 24th incarnation of our annual (okay, so there was no TIT in 2010. deal) Terrapin Invitational Tournament. We plan on making this year's tournament the same difficulty as last year, plus or minus epsilon, somewhere around the mythical "Regular Difficulty."

This is a packet submission event following the normal guidelines - if you were playing tournaments prior to last year, your team should be writing a packet. If your team meets this definition in name but doesn't really have much writing experience, you should email me *right away* to discuss it - I want teams to be able to attend this event, but building writing experience for teams is just as important as this event actually having enough submissions.

This set will be head edited by myself, SteveJon Guth, with assistance from the rest of the Maryland Academic Quiz Team.
The guidelines for question writing are in the original post here. Teams coming to this site will have a modified question deadlines as outlined below:

+$100 - Base Fee
-$50 - Packet submitted by Saturday, December 11th (optional!)
-$25 - Packet submitted by Saturday, December 18th.
+$0 - Packet submitted by Saturday, December 25th.
+$25 - Packet submitted by Saturday, January 1st.
+$50 - Packet submitted by Saturday, January 8th.
+$100 - Packet submitted by Saturday, January 15th.
+$10 - every day thereafter, because that is just ridiculous. Seriously. Why would you wait this long? I reserve the right to boot you from the field if you don't tell me why your packet is so late.
-$5 - Working buzzer discount, unlimited
-$10 - Competent moderator discount
+$10 - Formatting penalty for formatting your questions incorrectly (see formatting section below).
-$10 for each 200 miles traveled according to Google Maps (one way)
Minimum Fee Per Team: $40.

If you are a solo team or are a small team paying out of pocket, we are willing to negotiate additional discounts. Checks should be paid to Michigan Academic Competitions.

REGISTRATION:

To register, email me at [email protected]. Please indicate how many teams you're bringing (or interested in bringing) and what discounts you think you apply for (such as the number of moderators and buzzers you're bringing).

Details on where on campus the event will be held and when specifically registration will be will be announced closer to the date of the tournament.

Field:
Chicago (3)
Minnesota
Laferbrook + Vinokurov
OSU (2)
Free Agents + House
House

No travel discount? In any case, we'll probably talk about this at practice tomorrow and may end up sending a team or something.

At the very least, perhaps a "Way to go, you made it to Michigan, Minnesota!" discount might be in order.

I was lazy in putting up the entire fees as I wanted to post the announcement sooner. They'll probably be changed a bit as I remember more things and we discuss it in practice (ie there probably will be a travel discount of some sort)

We'll also talk about this one - we'd like to come, but it's 8 hours each way (not as insane as MN's 11, but still plenty.)

EDIT: 12/23: Definitely not gonna happen.

Put down Ohio State for three teams, without an outside shot at four.

Assuming that Chris' statement about this being open applies to this site, I'll show up with a team. I'm sure Matt Lafer with finagle his way onto it.

Anyone who'd like to join is welcome to email either of us.

I've talked with Libo about my prospective free agent situation, as there's some circumstances connected to it.

Also, any chance of PERV being available for folks not around to play the Midwest SCT?

I am also interested in being a free agent, and I could remain for this visual PERV trash tournament Saturday evening and/or Sunday morning should enough interest in a mirror materialize.

Ohio Wesleyan down for one (or maybe but almost certainly not two) teams. I am emailing you with further details now.

I've received permission to at least potentially run PERV time permitting after TIT. I know that there is a Midwest mirror later, but I'd imagine a number of teams won't have the opportunity to play it there, so this is an option (perhaps as counter programming against--ugh--the Harry Potter tournament).

Yeah, I'd be happy to stick around and play such a thing Saturday night, though probably not make a special drive for Sunday.

Here's the final updates for this tournament. It be held on the Third Floor of Mason Hall.

Parking can be found at:
324 Maynard St, Ann Arbor, MI (between East Liberty and William)
650 South Forest Avenue, Ann Arbor, MI (on Forest, south of South University Ave)

This is a rough map with the Parking Structures and Mason Hall listed: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?oe=utf-8 ... 801e255adf

We will begin registration at 8:30 am. Games will hopefully start at 9am. If you are running late, please call Bryan Berend at (248)-310-0634.

This is the final field:
Chicago (3)
Minnesota
Laferbrook + Vinokurov
OSU (2)
Free Agents (Rom + Mike Cheyne) + House
House

We're planning on doing a full round robin with byes for the preliminary rounds. This will then be followed by the disbanding of one of the House team and rebracketing into divisions of 4. After those games, a finals will be played as necessary. Also, the Laferbrook + Vinokurov team will not be eligible for the overall title.

Any final questions should be emailed to [email protected]

I need to take my youngest, smallest cat Anna to be spayed tomorrow. I would have logged on earlier today to withdraw, but this work computer made me retype a code to log in.

I trust that enough Michiganders and free agent(s) remain to form 2 house teams to complement the 7 visiting teams.

Minnesota won this site with a 11-1 record (their only loss to Chicago). The exhibition team of Laferbrook + Vinokurovis finished with a record of 10-2, but due to the eligibility restrictions, Chicago finished second with a record of 9-3.

Full stats will be forthcoming.
