Region 9 SCT at University of Illinois

Post by millionwaves »

Everyone,

I'm pleased to announce that the University of Illinois Academic Buzzer Team will be hosting the Region 9 SCT on February 5, 2010, at the breathtakingly scenic Champaign-Urbana campus of the University of Illinois. Region 9 encompasses Indiana and Illinois, except Chicago-land schools. I'll be returning to Urbana for the weekend to serve as the Tournament Director.

Registration

We'll be using NAQT's online registration system for this event. While we don't expect there to be any problem with field space, it's beneficial for everyone if you register early, because it helps us plan to provide the best tournament, and the event that we do end up with a space problem, you won't have to worry about it.

Register here!

Time and Location

Play will start at 9 AM, and, although I can't make any guarantees, I'm reasonably sure that it will finish by 6 PM. Please arrive by 8:30 at the latest.

This post will be updated with the exact location and initial meeting room after school resumes in the fall, although I believe that it will be in the English Building, which you're probably familiar with if you've been to a tournament at Illinois before. If it's not in the English Building (and it might very well not be, because the construction might still be disruptive), it will likely be in another building on the Main Quad, and you'll end up parking in the same place anyway.

Fees

The Region 9 SCT will use the standard fee structure, reproduced here for your convenience.

$120 for a school's first team
$100 for each extra team from a school
-$20 for teams from schools new to SCT

-$10 for bringing a working buzzer system
-$5 for bringing a working game clock
-$30 for bringing an experienced staff member

DI/DII

There's no reason why we shouldn't have enough teams to split the field for this event. Please make sure that you understand NAQT's Division II Eligibility before you register!

Current Field

NAQT maintains a list of teams registered in each division for the tournament on its website. View that here!

Parking

Almost no matter where we are, I suggest that you park in lot E3, right by the Main Library and Gregory Hall. It's totally free on the weekends and likely be nearly empty. You can see that parking lot on this map:

http://illinois.edu/ricker/CampusMap?ta ... uilding=43

For driving directions on Mapquest or Google Maps, I suggest that you use this address:

810 South Wright Street
Urbana, IL 61801

which is for Gregory Hall and should get you within 5 feet of the parking lot on the convenient side.

Lunch

We typically allow an hour for lunch about midway through our tournaments, which ought to be plenty of time. I suggest that you walk to the Student Union (there's food in the basement, including a Chick-Fil-A, a Sbarro's, and the inestimable Rice Garden) or to Green Street (which has most common campustown chain restaurants, like Jimmy John's, Chipotle, and Noodles and Company).

Other Questions

I can be reached at [email protected] if you have any questions I haven't covered above.

I hope to see you in Urbana on February 5!

The post above has been updated with the registration link. Thanks, Jeff!

Also, as a little more news to the above, we should have an exact idea of where the tournament will be shortly after January 9.

With a little over 3 weeks until the tournament, there are only 2 teams registered for this tournament (SIU-Edwardsville and Eureka College). Please sign up soon.

Chicago is in the process of figuring out how many teams we're sending and presumably will let you know soon. (I'm ineligible to go so I haven't really been paying attention to the discussions, but I know they're happening.)

Just for the record, the above scenario (one school sending teams to two different SCTs) is not actually permitted. If you would like to do this for some reason, please write to us asking for an exception.

I'm discussing with the UIC team right now if we'll go to the OSU site or the UIUC site. I'm hoping the UIUC site because it is 3 hours closer even though we are slated to play at OSU.

You can always play at the site in your ACUI region, or the site closest to your school, so it should be fine.

UIC's home ACUI region is region 8, not region 7. If UIC teams want to play at Ohio State, please contact me with details.

Is UIC in Region 8 or Region 9? This is the Region 9 thread. UW-Green Bay (=> 4 hrs from Chicago) will host SCT Region 8. The Ohio State University (=> 6 hrs from Chicago) will host Region 7 SCT. At this evening's practice, we will discuss sending 2 teams to UIUC: 1 for Div 1 & 1 for Div 2. NIU became the 3rd team (all Div 2) to register for this Illinois SCT.

Right now, we 5 teams in the DI bracket and 8 teams in the DII bracket (including, excitingly, four teams from Illinois State, who to my knowledge will be attending their first non-CBI tournament ever.) This means that I have exactly enough staff to run the tournament, as long as no one in the DI bracket minds scoring for a game or two on their byes. I think we can probably safely offer each team who does that a discount for staffing.

Please e-mail me as soon as possible to confirm the number of buzzers you're all bringing.

A former HS teammate of mine posted on Facebook that his team won the ISU intramural tourney (ostensibly on an NAQT intramural set) and therefore gets to go to SCT for free; a similar event has happened the last few years according to his FB feed, but they never actually sent the team to SCT after all. Maybe geographic proximity convinced them to pull the trigger this year? At any rate, they're excited to play on Saturday.

Has the building (e.g. Gregory Hall, English Building, etc.) been finalized? I recall that parking lot E3 is almost adjacent to Gregory Hall, and I parked for free in E3 during THUNDER. Are such lots plowed and still free for this weekend? I heard that UIUC got much less snow but more ice than UIC did.

This tournament will take place in English. In regards to parking we suggest teams park in lot E3 (adjacent to the main library), the lots are cleared and parking is free in the weekends.

Congratulations to Chicago A, consisting of Selene, Paul, Jimmy, and Tyler, who won the Division I tournament by having the best record after a triple round robin among five teams. Coming in second and third were Chicago B and Chicago C. In Division II, our congratulations are extended to Chicago D, which won an advantaged final over Chicago E after a single round robin to win the tournament. Coming in third in Division II was Northern Illinois.

I want to thank Illinois State for coming to their first non-CBI tournament ever, in my memory, especially with so many teams. I'm not sure if you read the message board, but if you do, you were all very gracious yesterday. As I said, it was a pleasure to meet all of you and I hope we see you at many more tournaments in the future.

I also want to thank Seth Teitler, Jonah Greenthal, Mike Sorice, Craig Messner, David Garb, Micah Hodosh, Ike Jose, Charles Martin, Billy Busse, Dayne Rogers, Mark Taylor, Jeff Geringer, and Laura Douglass for ably reading and scoring yesterday, and Kristin Strey for overcoming some truly puzzling internet problems and doing stats yesterday after Donald wasn't able to make it due to some car issues.

Stats should be up by the end of the day.

We should not forget to thank Trygve for taking a weekend away from his intense 1L studies at SIU-Carbondale to run this second straight smooth tournament at UIUC (after THUNDER)! Sixteen teams arrived in the snow on a Saturday morning (no motels, I presume), yet the tourney ended early. I already anticipate an awesome Illinois Open in four weeks.
