IO Mirror (3/5/2011) at UC Irvine

Post by cvdwightw »

UC Irvine will be hosting a West Coast mirror of Illinois Open on March 5. Details will be forthcoming once we get rooms (it's always an adventure with the UCI Scheduling Department), but we expect to start play no later than 10:00.

There is no packet submission required for this tournament, and anyone who has any interest in playing quizbowl is welcome, regardless of current or former student affiliation.

Base fee: $100 per team
Buzzer discount: -$5 per working buzzer
Travel discount: -$5 for every 100 miles traveled
Shorthanded/additional discounts to be negotiated

Tournament registrations should be sent to me for now at the address in my profile.

I'm down for this if I can find a good ticket price.

What is the feasibility of getting transportation from someone at Irvine from the following airports:
LAX
John Wayne
Long Beach

Poor. On the other hand, you could probably make arrangements with people from UCLA, depending on when you get in.
John Wayne
Very easy.
Long Beach
It's not ideal, but we could probably get someone up there.

We should be able to get you from LAX if you get in Saturday morning, depending if someone can house you friday night (my dorm room is the size of your kitchen, and has 3 people living in it), we could get you friday night.

Alright, I've set up price alerts for the 3 LA-area airports and San Diego for the hell of it.

If anyone's interested in teaming up on a free agent team, let me know.

So California's not completely dead after all, huh?

I guess if you've taken the 3/5 date then that leaves 3/19 for ASU to host something. Question is, what to host?

As for this tournament, I will attempt to bring some number of ASU players.

Mike, you are welcome to join ASU B (which will very probably be shorthanded). ASU A needs the practice for Nationals, however depending on how many members of my A team show up, it may not even exist at this tournament in which case there will be only one ASU team and you are welcome to it.

Ok, I booked my flight. It gets into Santa Ana at 10:20 PM on Friday and leaves at 7:45 AM on Sunday. Can someone from the Irvine team pick me up?

At this time, 5 ASU players are interested, awaiting confirmation. One of those players would be happy to join Mike Bentley as a free agent. I will keep the host informed of any changes.

Just to explore options: Can anyone going to this tournament accomodate some ASU team members for Friday and Saturday night? I'm looking at a Motel 6 if necessary, but if we could save some money we might take up an offer of couch/floor space. There are either 6 or 7 players from ASU coming. We can offer lodging for MUT on 3/19 in return.

Don't expect anything that makes complete sense out of me in the next day or so, as between spending a week in Baltimore and coming down with some sort of nasty virus there I've been pretty much out of the whole loop. I think this is sort of what the field looks like? Please correct me if you've posted here/sent me an e-mail and aren't counted.

ASU
UCSD x2?
UCLA
UCLA + Mike Bentley
Partial ASU team/Partial Chapman team (probably combine these 2?)
Claremont?
House team if necessary

Free Agents:
Willie Chen?

Actually, Matt McMahon tells me that he has arranged to send a Chapman team. So, I would play for that team, instead of as a free agent.

We're having trouble finding transportation again, although there's still hope. If we can't get a car, though, is there any feasible way to get to Irvine through public transportation?

The short answer is no. The long answer is that I can find a 7:07 AM train from Claremont to San Bernardino and an 8:55 from San Bernardino that gets into Tustin at 10:19, after which you'd have to call someone to make the ~15-20 minute trip up there and pick you up, and we wouldn't be able to start before 11 or so. Then, you'd have to leave around 5 to let you catch the 5:23 back from Tustin to San Bernardino, followed by a 2+ hour wait in San Bernardino before getting back to Claremont. Ultimately, I don't think all that for six hours makes sense for you or the rest of the field.

Alejandro, if you guys have a place I could crash on Friday night, I could conceivably rent a car and drive up to Claremont on Friday night. I could then take you guys back on Saturday night.

The Internet tells me that it takes about 45 minutes to drive between John Wayne Airport and Claremont--is this accurate? I'd be making the trip relatively late at night (around 10:30 PM on Friday) so traffic wouldn't be awful, right?

It took us about 50 minutes to get from Irvine to Claremont for EFT. Since you can get straight on the 55 from John Wayne, I'm guessing that 45 minutes is reasonably accurate, although IIRC the 10 East might be pretty bad even at that late hour on Friday.

Make that 1 ASU team and 2-3 free agents, unless any of the existing free agents would like to join shorthanded ASU B. (They'll be open to changing their team name to something you and they mutually agree upon.) At this difficult of a tournament, playing a shorthanded team doesn't make a lot of sense.

Okay, I think I'm sufficiently caught up on things to figure this out.
Please tell me if something isn't right here.

Teams:
UCLA
UCLA + Mike
Claremont A
Claremont B
ASU
ASU + Chapman (partial teams combined to form one full team)
UCSD A
UCSD B

Here are important things you need to know:

We will be meeting outside the second floor of Humanities Hall at 9:00
AM and starting play as soon as possible after that. We currently do
not anticipate providing breakfast and will let you know if this
changes. We will hopefully play a full round robin followed by a 4-4
upper-lower split and finals if necessary. Because of our room
reservations expiring at 5:00, we don't really have time for more. We
have various house players that can help fill out any partial teams.

Fees:
$100 per full team of 4+ players
-$5 for buzzer system
-$5 for every 100 miles traveled one-way (per school - I think this
only affects ASU and Mike)
-$25 for taking on one of our house players to fill out a 3-person team

Checks should be made out to "College Bowl Club at UCI." Please bring
check or cash with you to the tournament or request an address for
which to mail it.

Let me know if you have any questions,

Dwight

This tournament happened. I'm assuming UCSD won/is winning/will win, although I only have partial stats. Stats will probably be up tonight. Scores are, as one would expect, low.

NOTE TO FUTURE SELF: don't assume teams that have buzzer systems will actually bring them.

It did indeed happen. Speaking personally, it was great seeing all of you again. On behalf of my people, a big thank you to Irvine for hosting and to every other team which split up among different teams so that ASU wouldn't have to. We had a lot of fun at this despite the high difficulty, and look forward to participating in South California tournaments of any and every difficulty level in future years. And, of course, you have a return invitation from us to all tournaments we host deep in the Sonoran, as well. I look forward to finally being able to return your hospitality after two years of being hosted in California.

If you are ever short buzzers in the future, let us know, so that we can bring ours. It's starting to wear out after two years, but most of the time there's enough buzzers working on each side.
