ATROPHY 2 @ Northern Illinois University, DeKalb IL: 4/23/11
Hello! I'm excited to announce ATROPHY 2: A Tournament Run On Pennies, Halfpence, and Yen, to be held at the DeKalb campus of Northern Illinois University on April 23rd, 2011.
As with last year, this tournament is a nationals warmup event. The field will be restricted to teams from Illinois that are planning on attending 2011 PACE NSC and/or 2011 NAQT HSNCT and teams from outside Illinois that are planning on attending NSC, HSNCT, and/or 2011 HSAPQ NASAT. (That is, members of 2011 Team Illinois must play with their respective schools, but if an All-Star team from another state wishes to participate, they may. No other open teams will be allowed.) To fill last year's field, we accepted a small number of teams from schools that did not play nationals; unless our field dimensions dictate it, we likely will not do so again.
This tournament will be run using Yale University's BHSAT set, under the editorship of Matt Jackson.
The goal of this tournament is to provide an opportunity to play a nationals warmup without draining the nationals budget; as such, the entry fee for this tournament is markedly lower than our other tournaments, and we offer additional discounts for staff.
ENTRY FEE: $50/team
Moderating discount: -$20/staffer
Buzzer discount: -$5/buzzer
Travel discount: If you're from out-of-state, you play for $10/team. Period. Please bring your buzzers anyway, unless you're flying.
Minimum fee/team: $10 (we gotta pay the mirror fee)
New this year: Donald Taylor's charity singles event will be held immediately following this event. It will use the PSAT/NMSQT set, being written by St. Anselm's and Torrey Pines schools. I will let him make announcements regarding this event, but I will say that anyone wishing to play PSAT singles who cannot play ATROPHY 2 proper for whatever reason should still sign up. We're not having restrictions on the singles event - it's charity, we want as many players as we can handle! - so you can come for just the singles event if you like. To sign up, view Donald's thread here and email him.

IMSA will obviously be attending with at least one team. We are not planning to take our B team to nats at the moment, so it sounds like we cannot register them yet, but I would be happy to bring a second team to even out brackets if need be. I can staff if needed.

Bump with a field update. As we've got a very sizable number of staff already, we're likely going to open up registration to non-nationals-attending teams before too long. If you are attending nationals, you've got at least a week to get your registration in before I open up other teams to join and you risk losing your spot, so EMAIL ME BACK ALREADY.

If you're attending nationals, I'd really try to register by Wednesday. If by then, there's room in the field, I'll open it up to non-nationals attenders, and you should really register as soon after that because it'll be first come first serve for not a ton of spots. (There are a lot of teams interested but too busy with IHSA planning to confirm.) I'm not averse to saying "it's April 13th, there's room, you can come," but I won't be taking registrations if we don't have the staff, and I can't see us getting much past 16 teams.mleung wrote:Buffalo Grove is thinking about attending this tournament. Re: ATROPHY 2 @ Northern Illinois University, DeKalb IL: 4/23/11
OK, I'm sending out last minute reminders to all Illinois teams attending nationals right now. If you want to guarantee a spot in the field, you've gotta email me back by Wednesday night. Even if it's just a "we're probably going to make it" or "my captain will play this solo, we'll see if he/she has teammates too" or whatever, I really just need to hear back from people. I'll also be Facebook canvassing; talk to me there if need be.
A reminder - we'd love to have more non-Illinois teams, including NASAT All-Star teams if you'd like to get a practice tourney in!

OK, so we've got more than enough staff to expand the field beyond nationals-only teams and I've emailed a number of teams that had already mentioned their interest (including BG and Latin, who'd posted here). If you're interested in playing ATROPHY but aren't attending nationals, email me!

Overall seems to only be playoffs and the one crossover game. However, stats here: http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org= ... =standings do include everything.

It can't be what you describe, but it's also certainly not right; neither is the playoff stats I linked. I'll check with Brad to find out what the deal is when he gets home.whitesoxfan wrote:Overall seems to only be playoffs and the one crossover game. Re: ATROPHY 2 @ Northern Illinois University, DeKalb IL: 4/23/11
As promised....
Thanks to everyone who helped make ATROPHY 2 a great success!
After 10 rounds of play, IMSA led Loyola Academy by one game, then won a very close final over Loyola, 330-325. Both teams played excellent quizbowl all day long, and I was impressed by the play of all eight players over their two games to end the tournament. Specifically, Loyola's Morgan Venkus should join the ranks of Tristan Willey, Dylan Minarik, and Saieesh Rao as "sophomores to watch next year," after multiple great buzzes in the two rounds I saw Loyola. Other notable performances include 3rd place Carbondale putting up 25 PPB overall to win the Andrew Hart championship, 38/39 bonus parts correct (>29 PPB) in Round 3, and 3 of the field's top 5 bonus conversion rounds all day; IMSA's Eric Ordonez answering each of the last six tossups in IMSA's round 10 victory over Loyola; Auburn's Saad Sheikh taking top game honors with a 17-1 line for 165 points; and various other tales of excellent play and good times. The set was roundly enjoyed by all, from my vantage point, and we thank Matt Jackson and Yale for its use.
A hearty thanks to our awesome staff - Tom Egan, Michael Perovanovic, Danielle Long, Mike Wong, Matt Laird, Jonah Greenthal, Kristin Anne Strey, and statsman Donald Taylor. As always, this tournament couldn't have happened without you.
The All-Tournament team, based on the six non-crossover prelim matches, was:
1. Ben Chametzky, Carbondale, 100.83 PPG
2. Andrew Wang, New Trier
3. Nolan Winkler, Loyola
4. Saad Sheikh, Auburn S
5. Tristan Willey, Macomb
6. Alex Kling, Latin
7. Dylan Minarik, Belvidere North
8. Alex Cooper, Auburn B
9. Webster Guan, IMSA
10. Nolan Maloney, IMSA
We hope to see everyone in DeKalb for next year's slate of tournaments, including Huskie Bowl 4, ATROPHY 3, SCOP Novice 2, and (we hope, as we'll be submitting a bid) ACF Fall! Good luck at Nationals, everyone!
