CR Rider Bowl II (May 14, 2011) [CONFIRMED DATE CHANGE!]

Post by Down and out in Quintana Roo »

This is the announcement for the second annual Caesar Rodney Rider Bowl, at Caesar Rodney High School in Camden, Delaware. We're located just southwest of Dover, less than an hour south of Wilmington, and approximately two hours east of the DC metropolitan area. The tournament will be held on May 14th, 2011. We would like to hold the opening meeting at 8:45am (meaning all teams should be signed in by that time), and all rounds should start at 9:00am (9:15am at the latest). It is our goal to have all regular rounds be finished by 5:00pm (notably, last year we played 11 rounds - including a scrimmage and playoffs - and finished everything before 4:00pm - i fixed this time because i was corrected by last year's co-tournament director).

The price will be set at $60.00 for the first team, and $50.00 for every subsequent team. Discounts will consist of $10.00 off for moderators, buzzers, and then another $5.00 off for every 100 miles traveled (using Google Maps).

We will be using HSAPQ set #17, which is a set of reformatted HSAPQ-produced VHSL questions. The set we will receive will be reformatted from the original VHSL format and will have 15 sets and be standard 20/20 (meaning that many teams in Virginia, unfortunately, cannot play this set). In regards to difficulty and distribution, this set runs certainly no harder than any regular difficulty tournament (no matter how loosely the term is thrown around these days), and if you see last year's statistics, you'll notice that the questions were accessible for practically the entire field: http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org= ... =standings. In other words, these questions will not be too hard for anyone. If you are used to NAQT, HSAPQ is slightly different with its mACF distribution, but we believe it is superior and would like to continue to spread knowledge of HSAPQ and its great questions through the Delmarva Peninsula and beyond.

Currently, the cap on teams is going to be set at 24 teams, in order to keep the event small enough to ensure that only the best possible people will be reading questions, and that there will be a score keeper in every room. There is a potential and a desire to increase the cap to 28 or 30 teams, but that happening is pending on whether or not we have enough buzzers.

The bracketing at present will include 4 round robin brackets of 6 teams each for the prelims. Following the 5 matches in the prelims, all teams will be re-bracketed into 4 more round robin brackets based on record, the 3 consolation brackets, and the championship bracket, where all teams will play another 5 matches against similarly skilled teams, and then the top two teams of the championship bracket will play for the tournament title. In any event or field size, we will have a format where the finals and consolation rounds will be played in a round robin format. This current bracketing strategy is being reviewed by team members to ensure that we, and all teams participating, will be satisfied. A change is very possible.

This tournament is a PACE-NSC qualifier. Last year, almost a dozen (out of 14!) of the teams attending this tournament went on to represent their schools at NSC or NAQT's HSNCT. Four states were represented at this tournament, as well as Washington, D.C. So, in other words, regardless of your team's skill, there will be some great competition at this event from around the Mid-Atlantic region.

Directions to the school and information about lunch will be provided in time.

Any questions or concerns can be e-mailed to myself, Mr. Andrew Chrzanowski, at andrew(dot)chrzanowski(at)cr(dot)k12(dot)de(dot)us and more information may be forthcoming. Thanks and we hope to see you in May!

I am going to try to see what interest there is. It's possible that this is just too far for a day trip, and it's possible that we may qualify and wish to attend History Nationals instead, but this will be on my radar for the team.

Works for me. We always get the 200-mile discount when we go to Gov for driving like 204 miles, so no problem. We just want as many teams to come as possible, and i think we'll have plenty of readers for this.

Does this mean that you will allow Virginia teams, such as non-A teams, that won't play in VHSL to attend this tournament?

Also, for anybody interested in what last year's sets were like (in terms of writing, difficulty, etc.) check out HSAPQ's archives here: http://www.hsapq.com/wordpress/wp-conte ... s/2010/05/ and scroll down to "tourn11-01.pdf" and the ones beyond that in set 11.

As far as i know, the questions will be similar.

So, hey, i'll take actual registrations at any time if you want to plan early (i know this is many weeks away), but i need a real e-mail to make that happen.

In other words, post in this thread all you want (i'll update the "interested" column), but shoot me a real e-mail at my school address (click the little mail-looking thingy down there) to actually register.

Hey, we've got our first actual registration, two teams from William Tennent High School in Pennsylvania!

Plenty of time, but get those registrations in as soon as you can to guarantee your spot! I have a feeling we're going to have a way way bigger field than the 14 teams that showed up last year.

In accordance with Matt Weiner's post (see full posting here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10981#p210264) CR will indeed accept BCC's possible registration to this event with full disclosure that Dmitri Halikias will not be attending.

We really enjoyed participating in the first CRRB last year, so color us "interested" We are in the same boat as Bergen Academies---if my kids do well in the NJ History Bee & Bowl, they might want to attend the HB&B Nationals the same weekend as your CRRB II. Still, we are very interested.

We're now PACE-affiliated, so that means you can qualify for nationals with a good placement in our tournament! It's one of your last chances of the year in this region.

With the abrupt cancellation of the registration of both William Tennent teams, we are now down to 1 single team at the moment.

If more of these "interested" teams do not register within the next couple weeks, we will be forced to cancel the tournament. Please do not make us do this. My kids have been looking forward to this all year long and we have no other fund-raising opportunities.

Just three weeks to go. Please come.

I realize our tournament is competing with the National History Bowl for the weekend of the 16th, but there are dozens of teams from this region who did not participate in that at all (including CR).

I really hate having to make so many "B-CC won't be able to make it" posts, but given the distance, etc. it's just not in the cards... If I could get a ride from one of the DC/MD/VA area teams, I *might* be able to come and play as unaffiliated or help as a staffer, but it's not looking good. Really sorry about this...

I'm not giving up hope.

But.

How would everybody feel if we tried to reschedule this for Saturday, May 14th?

Maggie Walker is hosting a tournament that day, so that doesn't really affect us much at all. I don't know of any other tournaments even close to our area offered this day.

Please give me some feedback. If we can reschedule, i will, but i have yet to contact our principal about this at all.

TJ is very interested in attending, but we could probably only make the April 16 date. If the tournament were on that date, we could send at least two teams of players who didn't play VHSL States and a couple of moderators, if they would come in handy.

I'll have to talk with my teammates to confirm, but we'll probably end up going to the history bowl. Which means for now, it seems more likely that we would be able to come on May 14th. If the majority of our team ends up not being able to go to the history bowl or if we are unable to find a driver, we'd probably be able to send a team on the 16th, because it's a much shorter drive and it would be great to play good quizbowl. :P

That'd be great Stephen. We probably don't need any staffers (i could possibly have 15 staff members just from current CR students/players, plus alumni who i know will come back), but i guess it can't hurt.

It's VHSL Districts and Regionals questions that are used as the base for this set. Whether to allow other players from a school who heard those sets to participate will be left up to the host.

Cool. Thanks for looking into it, Anderson. We'd love to have you here.

I'm getting more positive responses for May 14th. I'm not going to make any official call until later this week, but at the moment there are substantially more teams who can come that date and cannot on April 16th.

Stay tuned.

Concord probably won't mind either way. May 14th actually might be better since it's after AP exams and pretty much the end of spring sports for most people, but it's okay if the April 16th date ends up as the date.

Re: CR Rider Bowl II (April 16, 2011) [POSSIBLE DATE CHANGE]

Post by Down and out in Quintana Roo »

So far it is very very clear that the majority supports May 14th. Schools who have not come to events all year are telling me that this is a date that works for them.

It's not 100% certain, but i will very likely be changing the date til then.

Other teams who may be inconvenienced by this change, accept my apology. But with this as our only fund-raiser for the year, we need to make it profitable.

Expect an official announcement within a few days, after a discussion with our principal to ensure the day is acceptable.

I don't have many good answers from my students, but given the relatively low number of those who are able to commit, it's likely we won't be able to do April 16th. If we can, it'll probably be with a skeleton team.

Re: CR Rider Bowl II (May 14, 2011) [CONFIRMED DATE CHANGE!]

Post by Down and out in Quintana Roo »

It has been confirmed by our principal that May 14, 2011 will be the new date of Rider Bowl II!!

I have edited the "interested" teams list to include only the ones who have told me that May 14th is a good day for them. Please post in this thread to declare interest but e-mail me to be officially registered!

We're excited to have a larger field now and we can accommodate probably any team that wants to come. We will have room.

Thanks for your patience. My apologies to teams who may not be able to attend, but this realistically was our only option.

Some official registrations would be great before our Spring Break! You only have three and a half weeks to go! E-mail me at the address on the right to sign up.

If the Maggie Walker BATE mirror does not happen, GDS will probably come to this tournament. I have not been able to find an announcement for the former, nor has anyone even confirmed that it is happening.

Unfortunately, some complications have arisen; I know for a fact that I won't be able to make it on the 14th. I'll float the idea to the rest of my team, but I don't think it's going to happen. My apologies, Mr. C, hope the tournament goes well.

Do what you can. And spread the word! God forbid teams from the DC area actually travel 2 hours anywhere like we have to for every tournament it seems.

I'll be darned. I check my mail during Spring Break (hello from Myrtle Beach!) and we have actual registrations. Yay! See the update above and come to this tournament if you're on the fence. It's your last chance for a "regular difficulty" tournament (dare i use the term anymore?) for the whole year in this area!

Can you please drop us back to two teams and also possibly send me some officialish looking invoice for Charter's wonderful bureaucracy?

I emailed JR from Maggie Walker about this a couple of days ago and haven't heard back yet either....

Hey, there are less than two weeks to go and we don't have a big field at all. Why don't you sign up?

There are a lot of people/teams that never really responded to repeated e-mails or requests to sign up. Please do that!

The probability that RM is going to send a team is down slightly, as we made the finals of It's Academic which tape that day. We're trying to find a driver, and we have two willing participants (Arun and Sam Deutsch); I'll keep you posted on our status.
