Alpharetta Varsity (2/5/11)--GSAC Mirror
All quiz bowl teams are invited to the inaugural Alpharetta Varsity Tournament, to be held at Alpharetta High School on February 5, 2011.
Divisions: Teams can register for one of two divisions: the National division and the Varsity division. Teams may choose which division to enter, but the National division is intended for those schools who have qualified for (or are very likely to qualify for) a national tournament this season. Each division will have its own separate preliminary and playoff rounds, and trophies will be awarded to the top-finishing teams in each division. Schools with multiple teams may choose to register one (or more) in each division.
Format: We are hoping to secure Gold or Platinum Certification for PACE, so this tournament will guarantee at least 7 games for teams and will use rebracketed playoffs. Exact format will be determined by the size of each division and will be announced closer to the tournament.
Questions: This tournament is a mirror of GSAC, written by Maggie Walker Governor’s School in Virginia. The match format will be 20 tossups with up to 20 three-part bonuses.
The distribution is:
4/4 Lit
4/4 Science
4/4 History
3/3 RMP
2/2 Arts
1/1 Social Science
1/1 Trash
1/1 Geography
Registration costs:
$70 for the first team
$60 for each subsequent team
-$5 for each buzzer system (maximum 1 per team)
Please fill out the attached registration form and mail it in order to register.
For more information, you can contact me at [email protected].

Field Update (1/5/10):
National
Centennial
Central Gwinnett
Chattahoochee (2)
Walton
Pensacola
Varsity
Marist (2?)
Heritage
There's still plenty of room in both divisions, though the National division is shaping up nicely already. We have a month to go before the tournament, so if your team wants to attend, please let me know as soon as possible.

They've expressed interest. I meant to put a question mark by them because Ms. Magedanz said she would check with the team, and I haven't heard any recent news.Hilltopper22 wrote:Is this Dunbar (KY)?AlphaQuizBowler wrote: Dunbar

I've been updating on the GATA forum, so I guess I haven't really kept up with this thread.
This tournament is happening. The National Division is playing a double round-robin, and stats for the first 5 rounds can be found here.

Centennial is really, really good. They have not lost a game to another team from Georgia in almost a year, since the Prison Bowl mirror at Norcross last March.

Did Centennial continue its great play by sweeping the 2nd round robin, or did someone challenge them in the 2nd go-round, forcing an advantaged final or, perhaps, a one match playoff?

Centennial continued its rampage and finished the day 10-0. They are seriously underestimated.Edward Powers wrote:Did Centennial continue its great play by sweeping the 2nd round robin, or did someone challenge them in the 2nd go-round, forcing an advantaged final or, perhaps, a one match playoff?

Re: Alpharetta Varsity (2/5/11)--GSAC Mirror
I'd like to congratulate Marist A and Centennial A on winning the Varsity and National divisions, respectively, of the first-ever Alpharetta Varsity Tournament. Here are the complete results:
Varsity Division:
1. Marist A
2. South Forsyth
3. Berkmar
4. Norcross B
5. Walker School A
6. Blessed Trinity
7. Central Gwinnett B
8. Woodstock
9. Marist B
10. Centennial B

National Division:
1. Centennial A
2. Chattahoochee A
3. House
4. Norcross A
5. Chattahoochee B
6. Central Gwinnett A
In the varsity division, ties in playoff brackets were broken by average points per game (and, if that didn't break the tie, points per bonus).
Top individual scorers were:
Varsity:
1. Davis (South Forsyth)
2. Ben (The Walker School A)
3. Michael (Norcross B)
National:
1. Adam (Centennial)
2. Kunal (Alpharetta)
3. Dawit (Central Gwinnett A)
Varsity Prelim stats can be found here
Varsity Playoff Stats can be found here.
National division stats can be found here.
I'd like to thank Maggie Walker for writing GSAC and letting us mirror it. So far I've heard very positive reviews of the questions.
This tournament is seeking PACE certification, so I'll post about that when I hear from the committee.

Re: Alpharetta Varsity (2/5/11)--GSAC Mirror
The National division has received platinum certification from PACE. This means that all 6 teams in the National division qualify for the NSC.
The Varsity Division will not qualify as it is the lower division of a segregated field.

For some very strange reason I feel like this certification doesn't make any sense.AlphaQuizBowler wrote:The National division has received platinum certification from PACE. This means that all 6 teams in the National division qualify for the NSC.

If there are four teams that fit that bill then of course it makes sense, especially considering that there's more at stake with platinum certification than just bids being awarded.
