MUT Mirror at Notre Dame (04/02/11)

Post by evilmonkey »

(With lots of copy/pasting from the original MUT thread)

The Quizbowl Club of Notre Dame will be hosting a mirror of the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament on April 2, 2011. This tournament will be written and edited by members of the University of Minnesota Quizbowl.

Eligibility: Only undergraduate (and high school) students can play this tournament. If you are a grad student, you cannot play this event.

Difficulty: MUT 2011 will be in line with other novice tournaments such as recent incarnations of ACF Fall and past incarnations of MUT.

Registration: If you would like to register a team for this tournament, please email [email protected]

Costs and other discounts
Base fee: $100
Buzzer discount: -$5
Moderator: -$10
Travel: -$10/200 miles by Google maps

Details:
In an attempt at compromise between the 9:00 and 10:00 start times, we will begin reading round 1, question 1 at 9:30. Because this is a later start than usual, I want to be started promptly at 9:30. To this end, we would like everyone to arrive by 9:15. IMSA and NIU will be arriving by 10, and will be scheduled for a first round match against each other, a game which they will make up during lunch. If you are bringing a buzzer system, please try to arrive a bit before 9:15 so we have time to set up the systems. I would like to have a contact number from each team, so I can call and figure out where you are. If you are running at least 15 minutes late (i.e. not going to be there til after 9:45), you will forfeit your first game. As of right now, we have 11 buzzers for 8 rooms, so it looks like we are in good shape in that regard. However, this also gives me the power to throw in a disincentive for lateness: If you arrive after 9:20, you will only receive a discount for those buzzer systems that are actually used.

Here is a handy reference link to a map of campus. http://www.nd.edu/campus-and-community/ ... us-map.pdf
Check-in and so forth will take place in Hayes-Healy 127. The tournament will be taking place in the Hayes-Healy and Nieuwland Science buildings (on the map, buildings 1082 and 1050 respectively). The closest parking is immediately south of Notre Dame Stadium, in the bigger of the lots marked B1.

Field (16)
Team Illinois (1, 1 moderator)
Chicago (3, 1 buzzer)
Depauw (2)
UIC (1, 1 buzzer)
Illinois (2, 2 buzzers)
Case Western (1, 2 buzzers)
WKU (1, 1 buzzer)
Michigan (2, 3 buzzers)
Northern Illinois (1)
Michigan St. (1)
IMSA (1, 1 moderator)
House (if necessary)

Lawrence will be sending 3-4 teams to either this or the main site - I'm not sure yet.

EDIT: That number depends on the funding situation for the team, too.

If I determine that there's enough money for this, there will be a UIUC team or two.

I informed Bowling Green about the existence of this mirror of MUT. Hopefully they will sign up for this tournament on their own. Failing that, I urge someone from Notre Dame to get in contact with one of their players and encourage them to come to this tournament.

There was a new team at Notre Dame's mirror of Buzzerfest last year... I forget who; I'll look it up.

Wooster. Have you guys contacted them? I think Sidney would probably love to bring a team or two to this.

After consulting with the other members of the club, we have decided that we ought to initially cap the field at 20 teams. The sole reason for this cap is that we feel at this time that we will not have enough competent moderators to support more than 20 teams. At this point, we obviously have only a single team confirmed in the field. However with a current "interested" list at 11 and several more area teams unaccounted for, I want to ensure that we do not take on a field larger than we can handle.

Because the situation with moderators is one that can be fixed (especially since graduate students are not eligible to play this tournament), the cap should not be viewed unchangeable. If we can get moderators from external sources, the number of teams we permit will increase.

Also, because we have limited the number of teams permitted in the field, I would like to initially limit the number of teams each school can bring to two. Any additional teams from a school will be put on a wait-list. If the field is not full by March 19th, we will begin allowing further teams from each school.

Are there any estimates what times of day this will run? I don't know how college circuit schedules go.

IMSA will attend iff the schedule makes this a manageable one-day trip. If so, we will have one moderator.

This could easily be a one day trip for you guys. The only hastle we will have is that we lose an hour when driving so teams from Illinois and other central time zone schools would have to leave an hour earlier. Besides that I can't imagine this tournament going later than 5 PM especially with quality moderating staff and good TDing.

I can't imagine the tournament running past 6 pm ET, and if everything goes according to plan we should be done by 5. As Mike said, the hard part for you guys is the morning drive. We'd like everyone to arrive by 8:30 am ET, for a 9:00 am ET start.

8:30 am ET start = 4:30 am CT departure from Aurora. That wouldn't work for us. If the start time were 10 am, I think we could do it.

I personally don't have any objection to a later start. However, those with longer drives may not want to get home any later than they already will. I'll talk to those already registered and see if they would be amenable to a 10 ET start.

In my experience, a one day quiz bowl trip where I have to wake up before 4 AM just doesn't end well. I would personally prefer the later start time for this (and other) reason(s).

Hey, so this happened today. 16 teams showed up, and we split into two 8 team brackets and played a round robin in each. After 7 rounds, the top four from each bracket advanced and played each of the top four from the other bracket. Playoff standings were based on those four afternoon games, and the three morning games against the other teams advancing from their morning bracket. After those eleven rounds, Michigan A and Team Illinois (HS All-star) stood tied at 6-1. Michigan A defeated Team Illinois in a one-game final, 400-265, to win the Notre Dame Mirror of the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament.

I'd like to thank everyone who came out and had patience in spite of the various delays. I'd also like to thank Jonah Greenthal, who spent most of his lunch reading for IMSA-NIU, Ben Dillon, who came out and helped moderate, and to the Minnesota Quizbowl Team, who once again produced a great tournament.

Prelim stats are here, and playoff stats are here

One note for the statistics: "Depauw B" is really two players from Depauw and two from Michigan St; "Michigan B" contains some players from DCC.

I can definitely concur with this, WKU really enjoyed seeing the sights on campus. As far as the tournament goes, it seemed reasonably well run. It was a bit disorganized at the beginning, but it was well staffed and I have no real issues with how things played out. Thanks for a good tournament.
