2011 Michigan High School State Championship (3/12/11)

Post by Ringil »

Hi all - it's that time of year again! Michigan Academic Competitions is pleased to invite your team to the 2011 Michigan NAQT State High School Championship Tournament. This event will be held on Saturday, March 12th, 2011, in Mason Hall on the Central Campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Since 1995, Michigan Academic Competitions has hosted several tournaments for high schools throughout the state of Michigan. This year's Michigan NAQT State High School Championship promises more of the same, as we hope to draw some of the finest schools from throughout Michigan. This event will be run with questions provided by NAQT (IS-105). As a result, teams entering the 2011 Michigan NAQT State High School Championship will be able to qualify for the 2011 NAQT High School National Championship.

Each match will consist of 2 9-minute halves or 24 tossup questions, whichever comes first. Players who first answer a question correctly will be rewarded with points and a chance for the entire team to answer bonus questions, all of which are worth a maximum of 30 points. Questions come from all areas: science, math, history and government, literature, current events, geography, popular culture, fine arts, sports, mythology and religion, social science, and general knowledge; with the academic areas heavily emphasized.

In an attempt to ensure that teams have the opportunity to compete against teams of equal skill, the schedule will incorporate a pooled round robin for preliminary play. In addition, we guarantee that each team will play a minimum of seven matches, with the top teams playing head-to-head to determine the tournament champion. Our goal is that each team plays as many matches as possible. We will also attempt to ensure that teams from the same school will not play each other during the preliminary rounds.

We will begin registration at 8:15 a.m. and hold a mandatory meeting for players and coaches at 8:45 a.m. Rounds will begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue through the morning and early afternoon with a lunch break around 1:00 p.m. Playoffs and a brief awards ceremony will follow, and we expect to finish no later than 6:00 p.m.

If you know of any teams that you think might be interested in this event, please forward this email to them. Thank you.

Registration for this event will initially be limited to 32 high school teams, and we will initially allow each school to register ONLY 2 TEAMS due to high demand for the tournament. The purpose of this is to maximize the number of schools that can participate in the event. When you register your school, you will have the option to apply for additional teams, which will be used to complete the tournament field on a first-come, first-served basis. Teams may consist of an unlimited number of players, only four of whom may play at once. It is our hope, however, that all the students attending the tournament will receive a good deal of playing time.

We will accept teams on a first-come basis until Noon on Monday, March 7th, 2011, unless we first reach the tournament maximum (if this happens, we will place these teams on a waiting list). Teams on the waiting list will then be notified of these open position by a first-come, first serve basis. Registration may only be done by e-mailing at [email protected]. You will receive confirmation of your registration by e-mail.

Checks should be made out to "Michigan Academic Competitions," and may either be brought to the tournament, or mailed to:

We are capping the field at 24 teams due to staffing constraints.

Wow, I have never seen a team get eight powers in a game where it barely breaks 10ppb. (Novi A against DCDS.) I couldn't imagine a more frustrating loss.

I do wonder if that actually happened though, since the stats say the teams heard 21 tossups that match, but there had to have been at least 12+11=23 tossups heard from the stats presented.

I just checked it to be sure. There was a slight error in reading -5 and 15. The number should be correct now.

Also, DCC A lost to DCC B in the winner's finals. A 4th-5th match is happening right now between Novi A and GPN.

Darn. DCD lost their two games in the playoffs by a combined score of 15 points in the playoffs...that's a bit unfortunate.

I hope it wasn't the last question that caused both losses.

And why is it that DCC B and Okemos have played different # of games while they are both undefeated?

It was... in both cases :(
Against CC, CC needed to power and 30 to win or 10 and 30 to tie, but then DCD negged and DCC 10 and 30ed to win.
The 2nd game, DCD was ahead by 25 going in to the last tossup, but GPN powered it and 20 the bonus to win.

DCC B has fewer games because they won the winner's bracket. Okemos started in the loser's bracket, but did not lose until the finals of it against DCC A. We had a modified double elimination system similar to HSNCT.

Agreed, this was very smooth tournament.

However, I'm can't see the reason behind Okemos only playing only one "top team" in Gpn where Novi, DCD, and GPN basically killed each other before losing to a DCC team.

"top team" is pretty subjective. If you ask me the only top team is CC A and then there's everyone else, but I would say that Utica Academy is in the same tier as GPN based on stats.

As for the reasoning, Okemos was in arguably the toughest division top to bottom, and only finished 3rd in their division putting them in the losers bracket from the get-go. They were at a huge disadvantage, one bad game and they were out. They ONLY had to beat Troy, Utica Academy, and GPN in back to back to back matches to get 3rd place.

Realistically, no format is perfect. This format did a good job of giving a relatively good placing of the top teams and crowning a state champion.

Peter,

"Novi, DCD, and GPN basically killed each other" is an overstatement. Novi and GPN didn't even play each other until we were both had our two losses and were out of the tournament. Also, Okemos was actually the one that knocked GPN out in the first place.

Since you seem to group Novi, DCD and GPN together as "top teams", Okemos did play 2 top teams, GPN and CC A, which is the same number we played of top teams we would have played in the double elimination format, had we not agreed to play GPN for 4th place.

In any case, in a format when the next game a team plays is determined by who wins in previous rounds (in other words, the schedule is determined by the games as they are being played and is not already set in stone), there is going to be some discrepancies when upsets happen. CC C beating out both GPN and DCD are upsets, in my opinion, that shook up the playoff bracket. I also view GPN knocking out DCD as a mild upset. CC B beating CC A was huge upset (although looking back I'm not that suprised after watching CC B demolish us) that resulted in us (and Okemos) having to play CC A in an elimination game instead of CC B. Had these upsets not happened, the bracket probably would have looked different.

For the most part, though, the results of this tournament are pretty comparable to previous tournaments, although DCD probably deserved higher, considering they lost to CC A by 5 points.

Those are just my thoughts.
