Re: 2011 HSNCT discussion
"Tryst With Destiny" seems to be dropped pretty early for Nehru. I really am nowhere near an expert (or even all that knowledgeable) about him, but that's a pretty recognizable thing right there early in the question.

Hey Jeff, would you mind posting the comp card system bonus. Also, what was the rationale behind that question?

HSNCT round 21 wrote:Pencil and paper ready. Consider a 256-team, power-matched quiz bowl tournament. For 10 points each--
A. If in every round each team played against an opponent with the same record, how many teams would still be undefeated after 5 rounds?
answer: _8_ teams [256/(2^5^) = (2^8^)/(2^5^) = 2^3^ = 8]
B. If in every round each team played against an opponent with the same record, how many teams would have a winning record after 7 rounds?
answer: _128_ teams [With an odd number of games played, no team would be at exactly .500, so exactly half the teams would have a winning record.]
C. If each team played 9 games, but the tournament lasted 12 rounds, then what is the minimum number of game rooms that would be required? Assume each game features exactly 2 teams.
answer: _96_ game rooms [With no byes at all, it would require 256/2 = 128 game rooms; 128 x (9/12) = 128 x (3/4) = 32 x 3 = 96]

Re: 2011 HSNCT discussion
While watching the finals, I think there was a question about T cells which lead in with something along the lines of "these types of cells are helped by the major histocompatibility complex" - I feel like the answer at that point could also be any antigen presenting cell because the MHC does in fact "help" the APCs (i.e. dendritic cells, B cells) by allowing them to present the antigens on their cell membranes. Could you please post that question?

Re: 2011 HSNCT discussion
Major histocompatibility complex class I molecules work to aid these cells. Like natural killer cells, one group of them releases the protein perforin, and these cells express glycoproteins (*) CD4 and CD8. Produced in an organ lying between the lungs, they have "helper," "memory," and "cytotoxic" varieties. For 10 points--name this type of white blood cell whose one-letter name suggests its origin in the thymus.
answer: _T_ cell or _T_ lymphocyte (prompt on "white blood cells" or "lymphocytes" before "thymus"; accept _cytotoxic T_ cells or _cytotoxic T_ lymphocytes before "CD4"; prompt on "Tc cells" before "CD4")

While what you said was true about the MHC, it looks like MHC Class I interacts with T cells only.sssssssskkkk wrote:While watching the finals, I think there was a question about T cells which lead in with something along the lines of "these types of cells are helped by the major histocompatibility complex" - I feel like the answer at that point could also be any antigen presenting cell because the MHC does in fact "help" the APCs (i.e. dendritic cells, B cells) by allowing them to present the antigens on their cell membranes. Re: 2011 HSNCT discussion
Ah yeah that makes it less ambiguous. I guess if someone really wanted to be a pain in the neck they could buzz in and say "all cells with a nucleus" because MHC Class 1 is expressed by all nucleated cells to present antigens to T-cells...

Is there a list of what teams are playing in each of the games on the audio recordings?

Game 6 was Fisher Catholic vs North Kansas City
If I'm correct, I believe all the games that were recorded were in Mike Bentley's room.
