Could we get an update on how many packets we're working with/the current team situation? I also think it'd be prudent to make sure someone's in charge of the logistics, since it'll be the first event of the weekend and getting buzzeers/staffers all set may be a bit of a hassle.

On a personal note, I too am finding this distribution way too rigid and, let's be honest, Arthurian for my tastes; random examples include how there seems to be no place for non-classical ancient history besides "choice," and for no reason whatsoever the 19th century of American history has been doubly weighted over the 20th. I don't at all plan on turning my half of our packet into a theme round, but I do think this event could be enriched by altering one or two things to make it a bit more evenly-distributed, and I hope other teams do the same.

Also, are there going to be volunteers to staff this tournament? We won't have enough bye-round readers if we're just doing two-person teams.

We currently have 12 teams "signed up" with a few people who never officially declared a team and maybe some others who are playing.

Let me repost the field here and try to organize some moderators + buzzers.

1. Bruce Arthur and Brendan Byrne (Polisario Front)--packet submitted
2. Mike Cheyne and Matt Bollinger (Team Magma)--packet submitted
3. Kurtis Droge and Libo Zeng (The Beagle Boys)--packet submitted
4. Jeff Hoppes and Chris Ray (Friends of Humanity)--packet submitted
5. Ryan Westbrook and Matt Lafer (Keep Royalty White, Rat Catching And Safe Sewage Residents' Party)--packet submitted
6. Jerry Vinokurov and Jonathan Magin (Ilf and Petrov's Excellent Adventure)--packet promised
7. Mike Bentley and Rob Carson (Get Rid of Slimy Girls)--packet submitted
8. Dallas Simons and Gautam Kandlikar (Codename: Kids Next Door)--packet submitted
9. Carsten Gehring and Mik Larsen (Chipko Andolan)--packet submitted
10. Joltin' Joe Nutter and Ben Chametsky (The Trung Sisters)--packet promised (half packet in?)
11. Marshall Steinbaum and Paul Gauthier (W.O.O.H.P.)--packet submitted
12. Andrew Hart and Trevor Davis (The Wackiest Ship in the Navy)--packet promised (half packet in)
13. Matt Weiner and Guy Tabachnick (Mental Organisms Designed Only for Fun--FUN!)--packet promised (half packet in)
14. Charles Hang and Adrian Blaszkiewicz (The Secret Society of Super-Villains)--packet promised
15. Ike Jose and Will Butler (Will and Ike, They Look Alike)--packet in (?)

Unmatched

Rom Masrour
Charlie Dees

If this has changed, please let me know.

Once teams are finalized, I, with the assistance of the redactors and Big Bruce Arthur, will form a schedule and decide on format.

STAFFERS
We obviously need staffers. We'll probably need around 6. During each round, the 2 people who wrote the packet will act as staffers. If anyone would like to volunteer for this or knows someone who could, that would be awesome.

Michael Hausinger
Matt Jackson?
Bryce Durgin
Miriam Nussbaum

BUZZERS
We need buzzers. Please bring them.

3 buzzers--Kurtis and Libo
various (at least 4)--Matt Weiner

So Cheyne and I talked about it, and we split duties up this way: I'll be in charge of liaising with Westbrook, the UChicago team, and the redactors (Kyle and Chris Chiego), in other words ensuring that there are rooms and packets, and Mike Cheyne will be in charge of ensuring that there are moderators and buzzers.

Please direct logistics-related correspondence to whichever one of us is appropriate.

Also, I am thinking a start time of 7-8 PM, with the 5-8 PM window a possibility for wiffleball, since a lot of people *could* get there early according to the poll.

I would be pretty surprised if we actually get 12 packets. We have two at the moment, plus the editor's packet, and the packet deadline is on Friday.

We're mostly done with our packet (ie only 1 question left), but we've been lazy in writing that question. We'll have it turned in for sure by Friday though.

With just a few days away, there are four packets submitted. If you turn in a late packet without communicating or are NOT planning on writing a packet (I know some people have been in contact with the redactors), then you may have to pay something or may even be dropped if the field has no room.

At the nominal deadline, I have full packets from:

Bentley and Carson
Arthur and Byrne
Cheyne and Bollinger
Droge and Zeng
Gauthier and Steinbaum
EDIT: Larsen and Gehring

I also have a half packet from Jeff Hoppes with the promise of another half on the way. I also heard from Matt Lafer and Dallas Simons that their packets are in the works. If you're going to turn in a packet, you need to let Chris and me know when to expect it. You also need to talk to Mike Cheyne about the penance you will have to do for turning it in late. This penance is likely to take the form either of a small fee or of food for the other people who are playing. I'm willing to be a little bit lenient about your general tardiness on account of the fact that, so far, you have all done a wonderful job of not writing repeats. I believe there is only one repeat in the first five packets, which is easy to take care of because you all had to write 4 extra tossups.

My first impression is that there is likely to be a fairly lively discussion thread in the aftermath of this tournament. People seem to have placed a premium on creativity, particularly in terms of historiography and common links, and with mixed results. There also seems to be a very wide spread in difficulty, often within individual packets. I say this just to warn you in advance that this should be a supremely entertaining tournament.

If you tell me that you have a packet and you bring it and it at least doesn't have like every question a duplicate, then I would imagine any penalty would be minimal, if at all. Not writing a packet at all, however, is most problematic.

Bentley and Carson
Arthur and Byrne
Cheyne and Bollinger
Droge and Zeng
Gauthier and Steinbaum
Larsen and Gehring
Simons and Kandlikar
Lafer and Westbrook
Ray and Hoppes
Magin and Vinokurov
Haddad-Fonda and Chiego

Halves:

Wiener but not Tabachnick
Hart but not Davis
Jose

Auroni, I just wrote you an email expressing appreciation for the offer of a full packet, but also pointing out that a half packet that I could combine with Ike's would also be a welcome contribution if you get tired.

P.S. Would any legal adult be willing to come sign me in and out of Max East before and after the tournament? I can't be out past eleven otherwise. It's not difficult, you just need flash an ID and sign a ledger.

Libo informs me he will only be bringing one buzzer, not three. Matt Weiner will be bringing at least four buzzers (I'm not sure how many in total). I would like to have one more buzzer system just to be on the safe side (perhaps Rom's buzzer system could be obtained/brought)?

More tossups from this packet will likely be forthcoming - I know that 19 or more are done and I will likely spend tomorrow typing out five more on my ipod.

I can also probably get there early; where is a nearby place I can park that's free in the evening?

Currently, we have 14 teams signed up for this event. The majority of them have submitted packets or at least half packets or have promised to turn in packets.

If we play everyone's packet, that's a lot of quizbowl. Even with tossups only, if we assume a round can be finished in 20 minutes, starting at 7:00, that's a long time. I don't really want to be playing past 11:00 on a school night.

My suggestion:

Combine the doubles teams into quads. Play "super packets" of 40/0. This would cut the rounds down (I think the majority of time added onto rounds is switching rooms, waiting for rooms to finish, getting packets set up on computers, switching moderators, etc.). It would give us like 7 packets plus finals plus Auroni's packet of mystery or whatever. That's fine for a side event especially with 40 tossup packets. It also would give us more moderators for each round (4 instead of 2).

Of course, then, how would quads be formed? Spur of the moment craziness? Wheeling and dealing while suckers are traveling? I will strongly propose this to Bruce pre event and see what he thinks, but I wonder if others share my concerns at this moment.

Also:

If we're doing wheeling and dealing now, I would like to play with Marshall Steinbaum and Paul Gauthier.

I know that 19 or more are done ?
Fewer than this are actually done.

We should pick teams dodgeball style. I'd prefer not to play 40 tossup rounds, but if that's what happens it would at least be interesting.

I'm in favor of the quads suggestion. It also prevents us from being as obliged to wait on people showing up late since they'll have more teammates. I'd be for just randomly assigning teams together to make things easier.

I'm skeptical of the idea that most quizbowlers would have a problem playing until 11 PM, especially at Chicago Open where it's rather expected that things will run well into the night.

But if there is overwhelming support I will go along with it.
