ANNOUNCEMENT: Chicago Open 2011 (July 30, 2011)

Post by No Rules Westbrook »

Okay, it's probably time that I get out this announcement.

As some of you may already know, I'm going to be head editing CO.

Miriam Nussbaum volunteered to write and edit classical music. SteveJon Guth will be editing science.

Here's the distribution for submitted packets:
5/5 history (at least 1/1 American, 1/1 European, 1/1 world, vary by time and place)
5/5 Literature (at least 1/1 American, 1/1 European, 1/1 world, vary genres etc.)
5/5 Science (at least 1/1 bio, 1/1 chem, 1/1 physics, 1/1 other sciences)
3/3 RMP (at least 1/1 myth and 1/1 philosophy, no rigid 1/1 requirement for religion necessarily - or feel free to construe religion loosely)
3/3 Fine Arts (at least 1/1 art and 1/1 classical music)
2/2 Social Science (no more than 1/1 of any cateogry of soc sci)
2/2 Geography or Trash or "Your Choice" (no more than 1/1 of any of those things, "your choice" meaning any academic topic of course)

Length: Basically, every submitted tossup should at least make it to the sixth line (10 point, TNR, 1 inch margins) and should not exceed the eighth line.

Difficulty: I imagine this event will wind up with a difficulty a little higher than ACF Nationals (note that - I mean ACF Nats 09 or 10 - not this year's Nats). But, just as I said in 2008 - I don't care if your ideal difficulty is higher or lower than mine, within reason, so long as you try to be consistent within each packet and write on things within the realm of importance and gettability.

Fees: Send packet 60 days before tournament - reduced fee of $60 - By June 5, 2011
Send packet 35 days before tournament - normal fee of $120 - By June 25, 2011
Send packet 17 days before tournament - raised fee of $160 By July 12, 2011
Send packet after that - $180
(With tourney date being July 30)

I'll also give standard discounts for buzzers and moderators, and two discounts of $50 and $25 for the first and second best packet I receive (in my opinion - taking into consideration the experience and skills of the writers, etc.)

My email: [email protected]
Email me there to register for the tourney, for questions about the tourney, if you want to moderate at the tourney, or if you want to write for the tourney.

Packets Received:
Beyer Team - Early Deadline
Jordan Palmer (on behalf of his team) - Early Deadline
Mike Cheyne Team - Early Deadline
Teitler Team - Regular Deadline
Matt Lafer Team - Regular Deadline
Ted Gioia Team - Partial Packet Received
Surya Team - Partial Packet Received
Magin Team - Partial Packet Received

List of events scheduled for CO Weekend:

Friday night - Guerilla History Doubles
Saturday - Chi Open main event
Saturday night - Open (?)
Sunday - Chi Open Trash (run by Mike Bentley)

Is it too much to ask for the deadlines to be set on Sundays as usual, instead of pretty much arbitrary days of the week?

Setting the early deadline on the Sunday of HSNCT or NSC is probably not a great idea either.

I was just ballparking in case the date of the tourney should change. You may consider the early deadline the Sunday after HSNCT weekend, sure.

I have already been working on a packet at "work" in case CO et al is held on a weekend when I am not committed to attending a race. The Brickyard 400 on the last weekend of July will have to wait till 2012 or even later despite my 2011 NASCAR license.

Well, I haven't heard any objections to July 30 as the date. So let's say that's when it will be.

Is there not going to be a CO trash this year? I haven't heard anything about it (or for that matter, any side events).

I am offering to append TERD as CO Trash's replacement for the Sunday trash event. Note, that while I might ease up on some of the wackier ideas, I don't intend on changing the distribution or really making it less vanity, so this might not appeal to all comers--I kind of want to preserve the answers I've already written on and picked out, so I'm not overly interested in taking on collaborators to make this more appealing to a general audience, so if people aren't up for this I'll hold off and something else can take its place.

Note: This is not CO Trash. I am not a part of the cabal. Marnold is still in charge.

I'm certainly in favor of AN event for Sunday - how wacky is TERD really going to be, and would there be a serious issue with taking like a few questions per round (if a collaborator could be found) to balance anything out? Honestly trash tournaments inherently tend to be a little vanityish, so if that's the only problem, it's probably not that big of a deal.

I think my feeling right now is that all tossups and bonuses are convertible--that is, I'm not going to toss up a 29th tier NES game. However, for example, while the majority of music and video game questions are answerable and on things that I think people know, they are also on things that I like (without obviously being attached to me). So, yeah, the majority of video game questions are on older things. There's a lot more college basketball than the NBA, which is a reverse of what people seem to like. That sort of thing. I guess I would be willing to accept some collaborators in some of the areas that would obviously be thrown the most out of whack, such as music.

For what it's worth, I plan to have my law school set ready to play for CO Sunday, if there is space. It shouldn't take too long and might be best served as a shootout-style event, though I'm open to running a team format if there is demand.

I have not found any postings about CO teams. I have written 12+10 (including 5+5 science) here at "work" while my contract is essentially being bought out. I am looking for teammates who could help me finish 25+25 before Ryan's still vague 60-day super bonus deadline.

I probably could write the remaining 13+15, but I will practically be living next month within Speedway, IN (an incorporated enclave) for the 100th anniversary Indy 500. All living 500 starters have been invited, and I still have some drivers to check off my bucket-list, believe-it-or-not. I might also have to correct ABC, for VERSUS at Long Beach needed my redactions.

Last year, lit doubles commenced at midnight, and they were truncated once teams started walking out after six rounds. CO trash started too early that Sunday morning for me, but the fine arts doubles were my most enjoyable tourney during that 2010 weekend.

With so much trash on hiatus (TRASH Regionals, TRASHionals, VCU Open alternative, & Marnold's CO Trash) for 2010-2011, Mike's TERD sounds appropriate for late Sunday morning.

Is Craig considering a revised version of his social science/philosophy/criticism with that unpronounceable name for CO weekend?

I've added definite dates to the packet deadlines - since, for some reason, people are bad at counting backwards. They don't fall on Sundays, but c'est la vie.

And I've added a section for confirmed side events. (See discussion referred to by Cheyne)

Hey, just a heads up, we're about a week out on that early packet deadline. Let me repost the spreadsheet for teams here, since it's a bit buried in that CO matchmaking thread - I assume this is still fairly accurate?:

We found out that this distribution annoyingly sums up to 25, which is not divisible by four. Is there a reason you want 2/2 social science and 2/2 your choice?

Yeah, there's a reason. It gives me more flexibility in choosing the final few questions to fill out a packet. Sorry, try to con someone into writing that 25th question.

I will be playing COLT but not CO, so would be willing to moderate if needed. Though I will emphasize the "if needed" part since I wouldn't say I'm the best of moderators, but I do have experience and tend to know how to pronounce words, especially if given time to review the questions.

Hmm, my inability to fully read the first post of this thread may not work in favor. Sorry for clogging up the thread with a post unimportant to 99% of the readers.

Thanks to Ryan et al. for a very enjoyable tournament, both in terms of the quality of the set (all sorts of great things that I've been waiting for came up; I'm sure I'll have lots of good stuff to say in the discussion thread) and the smoothness of the logistics.

On my usual anal note: in five different rounds, my team's stat lines vary quite a bit from what I have written down. If anyone cares, for posterity's sake, I can send the corrections to whomever is currently managing stats. (Matt Weiner was our team's actual high scorer.)

PM all corrections to me. I'll try to fix them this week, but I will be in the process of packing and moving across the country, so it may sit for a couple of weeks.

At the risk of seeming petty, John, I think I noticed you giving one of my powers to Matt W in Round 13, so my stats there are correct. On the other hand, I definitely had more than 5 negs over the course of the day. John will have the correct stats for those, so add those and other corrections he has.

Even with the occasional voyages into Crazytown, I had a lot of fun at this tournament. It was great to play with three awesome, fun players I've never been on a team with, and the questions were on the fun, rather than the painful, side of difficult. Thanks are due to the editors for all the work they did on it.

Maybe you're just better than you think you are? John didn't notice any misattribution of negs.

On that note, John and Libo, I've fixed the errors you mentioned (with the exception, of course, of the power that Matt B. noted above).

Yeah, this tournament was pretty good. Somebody give Ryan Westbrook a copy of a decent scoresheet file as a present, he deserves it for an editing job well done.

This summarizes my view of this tournament as well.

This tournament was written and edited exactly the way CO should have been written and edited. Barring a few suboptimal questions, it hit the bulls-eye of difficulty, accessibility, answer selection, and balance.

I thought this was a good tournament overall but I think calling this some paradigmatic example of CO is going overboard. There were lots of good questions, but there were also lots of "voyages into Crazytown" that I thought were only marginally justifiable. Also, this tournament could have used some more science that you could get by being an actual scientist rather than reading Wikipedia articles.

I don't think zeal for accuracy is petty. I apologize for slipping up there.

Yes, you're right. I only started checking stats from Round 2 forward (since I first noticed something fishy in Round 2) and only checked the raw numbers. It turns out there is also a misattribution in Round 1 (Matt Weiner got one of your tens), and your stats were switched wholesale for his in Round 5.

I agree with Bruce that using real scoresheets might help with this problem.

Since there are no mirrors, will the set be posted soon? I would love to read through it.

Is there any reason why a formal discussion thread hasn't been posted yet? I thought this was the best hard tournament I've played since CO 2008. While it definitely had the distinctive feel of Westbrook's style that over-emphasizes certain sub-distributions and neglects others, this was an exemplary tournament.

This.

Anyone who wants to make up their own scoresheet for some reason (which seems odd to me, because in most cases the NAQT scoresheet works extremely well, and is available for free download online) needs to include lines to separate each question. When I was moderating, I chose to take the time between rounds to mark lines on my scoresheets. When Jonah and I switched off, I was frustrated by the difficulty reading the scoresheets of those who hadn't drawn lines. Other features that are nice are question numbers down the middle of the page, and a section to mark which player got the tossup.

To moderators/scorekeepers: If you don't mark who got the tossup, I have no idea who got that third power that you didn't remember to include in your tally at the bottom. There are at least 4 instances where I had to just randomly attribute a power, ten, or neg to a player.
