2011 UCSD Triton Novice Tournament - Oct 8

The UCSD quizbowl club is pleased to announce a JV tournament on October 8, 2011. We will be mirroring the Fall Novice Tournament.

Entrance eligibility:
Sophomores and below, or juniors or seniors who have played less than two years of quizbowl. Academic League participation will not count toward this restriction. If you have questions about eligibility, please email us at ucsdqb [AT] gmail.com.

The fee structure for this tournament:

$50 for the first team from a school
$45 for subsequent teams (B team, C team, etc)
-$10 for new teams
-$10 for moderators
-$5 for functional buzzers
-$5 for every 100 miles traveled

The minimum total fee is $0.

There is a maximum of 4 players per team.

We're going to cap this tournament at 20 teams for now, pending interest and available staffers, so if your team is interested in this, please email us at ucsdqb [AT] gmail.com.

With less than a month before the tournament, 7 teams are currently registered with another 6 teams showing interest. There's about 7 spots still open in the field, so send an email to ucsdqb [at] gmail.com if you would like to register. Exact location is still pending, but we expect to start check-in at 8AM and run from 9AM to 4PM.

A couple members are wondering what time the tournament starts and ends. Is this information available yet?

We have reached our room and reader cap at 30 teams. While we would like to expand the field, we're limited to 15 rooms. We have added a waitlist, so if any team needs to drop please let us know ASAP so we can get to the first team on the waitlist.

We should now be good on buzzers, but we can definitely use a few more experienced readers (hint hint, RB, LJ, TP A-teamers). This should be the largest-ever high school tournament in Southern California (perhaps even on the West Coast?) at this rate and we're very excited about the number of new teams here.

The exact tournament format is still being debated, but will likely be 5 pools of 6 teams followed by a rebracketed RR. We have been considering some kind of card system, but that's going to be difficult to set up with the limitations we have.

A logistics email will go out on Monday with all additional needed info, including the rules, times, etc. Please email us if you have any changes to report.

I know Dwight and myself are planning to come down to read, and hopefully another UCI club member or two can join us. Its's amazing that you have so many teams!

Torrey Pines A beat La Jolla A in a one-game final to win this tournament. San Dieguito A beat Bishop's C in the third-place game. Thanks to all the teams who came and the many staffers who showed up to help, with particular thanks to Dwight and Matt who drove down from Irvine. When crises happened, it helped to have experienced people who leaped into action as well as enthusiastic freshmen willing to do a variety of tasks. We finished almost all rounds by 3 and had the finals completed and everyone out by 4, which is a testament to some excellent teamwork and initiative on the parts of many staffers.

I have the stat sheets and will enter the final and a few of the other missing games plus clean up the stats a bit at some point in the near future. The prelim brackets were fairly unbalanced (a consequence of so many new teams and players), so the prelim records did not carry over to the playoff brackets.

A final note: The FNT set needs quite a bit of work before it's played elsewhere. There were still a good number of outright factual errors, lots of repeated subjects (often right after one another in the same packet), and poor writing all around including some super-easy lead-ins and bonuses that gave away the answers. Regardless of those issues, I heard good reviews from the non-circuit teams who showed up and I hope they'll continue to seek out good quizbowl tournaments in the future.

And that moderator slowness issue in our bracket was handled well...maybe TDs should "test out moderators" the day before either in person or online and give them advice? Maybe wasn't possible for such a large tournament but everything turned out well.

Wasn't so much moderator slowness (in that prelim bracket) as the fact one of the mods we had placed in that bracket decided to sleep in that morning, putting that one a good 45 minutes behind. We'd spent the last 2 weeks having the new mods read in practice, so we were pretty sure of their abilities and were able to get through the last 5 rounds in 2 hours once everyone had arrived.

Getting new teams to come was mostly a matter of tracking down email addresses and getting face time at the Academic League pre-season meetings. We're still trying to get more teams from the City and East County leagues (where we haven't had a chance to speak yet), but I was quite pleased with the attendance from the Sweetwater and North County schools. There are lots of promising schools all over San Diego county who should get the chance to play outside their league and/or on good questions, so it was good to see a number of new teams as well as several repeat attendees from last year's novice tournament. San Dieguito and Bishop's in particular should definitely play more pyramidal tournaments--they're a legitimate threat (along with Canyon Crest) to dethrone the TP-LJ-RB triumvirate.
