TELESCOP 2 at NIU: 29 October 2011

Post by TheDoctor »

Northern Illinois University will be hosting a second iteration of TELESCOP (Tournament of Exciting Learning Experiences with SCOP) on 29 October 2011. The tournament will be run on SCOP 2. Please contact [email protected] if you are interested in mirroring the set.

This is a novice tournament. Players who have actively participated in a national tournament are disqualified from entering. Though this is the only official eligibility guideline, players who are known to be of a higher caliber will be excluded as well, and we will review the case of any player who has attended nationals but may still qualify as a novice. If you have any questions about whether your players are eligible, please contact [email protected].

Entry fees:
Basic entry fee: $50/team
Extra team discount: -$5/additional team (If your team has more than eight players, we strongly suggest fielding a second team)
Buzzer discount: -$5/working buzzer (maximum 1/team)
Experienced staffer discount: -$5/experienced staffer (contact me ASAP if you plan to offer a staffer; maximum 2/school)
SCOP team discount: -$20

To register, inquire about player eligibility, ask about mirroring the set, or with other questions, please e-mail [email protected]

Is there any more information available about this tournament? Is the field updated?

Official plea for moderators. I will pay you in pizza and can reimburse gas if you've got an especially long drive.

I would, but I'm staffing a tournament 20 miles away. Ironically, using the Illinois format.

If he's staffing an Illinois-format tournament, apparently he is sick.

Congratulations to Loyola A for winning the second annual TELESCOP in an excellent 380-365 final over Metea Valley; full stats, including a rundown of the end of the tournament (because parallel playoff brackets look very confusing in SQBS) will be posted tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone who attended and/or helped staff! Remember that the set isn't publicly cleared, but any comments on the set can certainly be emailed to [email protected] (which gets forwarded to both Kristin and me).

OK, so the rundown:

The teams were ranked in their prelim pools by record, then PPG; we then took the top two teams from each pool and put them into the championship pools. (3rd place teams went to pool 2, 4th place to pool 3, etc.) The top 8 teams were then ranked by morning PPB, and the 1, 4, 5, and 8 seeds were placed in pool 1A, while 2, 3, 6, and 7 went to pool 1B. The winners of those pools would play each other for the title. (This setup created repeat matches; we would have liked to have altered the pools to avoid them, but it would have been different than announced beforehand and that's not fair. Live and learn - next time we schedule parallel brackets, we're reserving that right if the difference in seeding is small (which is something that would then be defined).)

Playing out the afternoon pools left a 3-way circle of death between Loyola A, Bloomington, and Fenton A for the pool 1A championship; we ranked them by afternoon PPG (Loyola 1, Bloomington 2, Fenton 3) and used half packets to determine the pool winner. 2 played 3, and Bloomington won; Bloomington then played Loyola for the 2.5th time Saturday, and Loyola won in comeback fashion to win the pool and, non-officially, break the head-to-head tie between these two excellent teams. That set up the exceedingly close final between Loyola and Metea Valley, which was, as noted above, a great, close match.

Thanks again to all who attended!
