Penn Bowl Mirror at WKU (2/11/12)

Post by Rococo A Go Go »

Western Kentucky University will be mirroring Penn Bowl on February 11, 2012. I will be serving as the the tournament director. This tournament is open to all collegiate and high school teams, although "open" or "mixed" teams are not permitted.

Fee Structure
Base fee per team: $120 each
Functional buzzers: -$10 each
Competent moderators: -$15 each
Travel (per school): -$15 per 200 miles (one-way, as determined by Google Maps or Mapquest)

Self-funded teams can work out a discount plan, just email me for that. I encourage every team to bring staffers and buzzers so this tournament can take place. We will provide staffers with some sort of free lunch. All checks should be made out to "WKU Academic Competition Club."

The tournament will start at 8:30 AM Central time on Feb. 11th, meaning that registration will take place from 8:00-8:30. Games will start precisely at 9:00 AM, or earlier if everyone gets here on time. Other logistical information such as what building this tournament will take place in will be determined later this month. The field is going to be capped at 16 teams, and I can't forsee us needing to expand it. To register, please email me at [email protected]

Is this a mirror of the academic or trash?

Academic. If there's substantial interest in some sort of side event we might be interested in running one.

We can't hold this in the building we want because of some kind of "Greek Leadership Symposium", something I'm sure is very important to the future of humanity.

Anyway, I'm going to look for other hosting space today and tomorrow. If we can't get find space to host it sometime in the next week or so, I'll have to postpone the tournament. However I find it unlikely I won't be able to find 7 or 8 rooms somewhere.

Nick, hope all is well. Any luck on finding new rooms? Also, is it possible to get a field update?

There are hopeful signs on the room reservation front, the campus scheduling system crashed this afternoon, but the WKU Scheduling Coordinator is working on getting us some rooms for this. If all goes well, I'll know exactly what rooms this tournament will be in by tomorrow morning. We also are looking for staffers, in the hopes that we can have a great moderator and scorekeeper in every room, so teams should take advantage of the staffing discount if they can. Anyway, here's a field update:

Current Field
Centre (3 teams, 1 buzzer)
Grayson County HS (1 team, 1 buzzer, 1 staffer)
Harding (1 team, 2 buzzers)
Jefferson CC (1 team, 1 buzzer)
Louisville (3 teams, 2 buzzers)

Hey-oh! :D

All right, after polling interest again today at practice, Centre will be bringing two teams and a buzzer set. There is a chance we may have enough for 3 teams, but that is a little less likely.

Coolio. :D We're uber-pumped,

This tournament will take place in Cherry Hall. I'll send out a more detalied logistical email by Thursday. Please let me know by then if the amount of teams you are bringing has changed. We're at 9 teams right now, so if we can find another team or two that would be great.

So my B teamers decided to drop out. Harding will again only have one team at this tournament. Sorry.

I can sympathize with this, so no worries. If we hold at 8 teams, we will have a full round robin, split into two pools of four, and then have a final if needed.

Oh, shucks... :D Well, a few more people were too excited, so now we are at 3 teams.

So, Centre is now down for 3 teams and 1 buzzer.

There may be some snow Friday night into Saturday morning, as the area is under a Winter Weather Advisory. The accumlation is expected to be light (1-2 inches), but everybody should remember to drive carefully. If you need a little extra time on Saturday morning, just call me and let me know.

I'd like to thank the 9 teams that attended our Penn Bowl mirror at WKU today. We had a few issues with literally half of our staffers not showing up and a few other minor things, but overall things ran smoothly although unfortunately a bit behind schedule. I would like to thank everyone who helped staff our tournament as well.

After playing a full round robin, Harding (8-0) played an advantaged final against Louisville A (7-1), and Louisville proceeded to win both games of the final to take the tournament championship. Full stats can be found here.
