Barrington Invitational Tournament IX (3.17.12)
Dear Scholastic/Quiz Bowl Coach,
Your school is invited to participate in the ninth annual Barrington Invitational Scholastic Bowl Tournament on Saturday, March 17th, 2012. This tournament will be staged at Barrington Middle School – STATION CAMPUS (215 Eastern Ave), Barrington, IL. Each match will consist of 20 toss-up (individual) questions, and a maximum of 20 bonus (team) questions overall. This middle/junior high school tournament will be conducted using IESA rules to govern most of match play, with two notable exceptions. We will use modified Academic Competition Federation rules to govern the answering of the bonus questions and we will disregard the IESA ‘slaughter’ rule. To summarize, the mACF rules for bonus questions will be the same as what you may have experienced if your team attended the last two editions of the Barrington Invitational.
• All bonus questions will be 3 parts and worth a total of 30 points. Each part is asked one at a time, with the controlling team having up to 10 seconds (15 on math computations) to respond.
• Players on both teams may quietly confer, even while the bonus question is being read (a definite departure from current IESA practice), but any such discussion should not disrupt the other team’s ability to hear the question.
• The first answer clearly directed towards the moderator will serve as the team’s answer. If conflicting answers are offered, the captain will be prompted to choose. If an answer is incorrect, the rebounding team will be offered a chance to answer within 3 seconds (or the remainder of time on math computation, if more than 3 seconds remain).
• If neither team answers correctly, the correct answer is read and the next bonus part is read to the controlling team.
Each team is limited to 8 players, and we are also only going to permit substitutions at halftime, or prior to overtime. Each school is welcome to enter multiple teams, but each team must be accompanied by an adult. I am also going to only provide a moderator for each room, which means a coach from each team will need to share the scoring duties, unless the moderator wishes to keep their own score. Each school will be guaranteed six games. Teams will be separated into three divisions this year, with a ‘challenge’ division, a ‘standard’ division, and a ‘B’ division. The first team entered from a given school must be in either the ‘challenge’ or ‘standard’ division; the second team can be entered into any division. The ‘challenge’ division is geared for teams that expect to win an IESA regional and vie for a sectional title this year, which should, in turn, make the ‘standard’ field a little more exciting.
Please fax the attached reservation form as soon as possible, or send me an e-mail ([email protected]) to hold your spot. You are free to send the $70.00/team entry fee (payable to Barrington Middle School, Station Campus) at a later time, but I would like to have all payments in hand by February 28th. A letter of confirmation with further details will be e-mailed in late January. Entry fees will not be refunded to teams that withdraw after February 28th, 2012.
We look forward to your participation on March 17th, 2012. Teams should arrive no later than 8:30 A.M. The final tournament games should conclude by 4:00 P.M. I can be reached via e-mail at [email protected].
Sincerely,
Jeffrey M. Price

Re: Barrington Invitational Tournament IX (3.17.12)
Any ideas on the best way to structure a tournament of 10 teams when you have exactly 10 packets? I thought about RR with a 1-game final in the event of a tie for 1st, but what happens if I get a circle of death for 1st?

Two five-team brackets splitting into tiered playoffs 4/4/2? Kind of ungainly, but only uses eight packets, leaving two in case that circle of death needs to be broken.

Too unreliable to use quarter-packets for a circle of death?

That was my way of saying "don't do quarter packet tiebreakers."
Jeff's idea is probably the best way you'll have of doing things.

Re: Barrington Invitational Tournament IX (3.17.12)
I'd do a full round robin with a maybe-final -- if first place clears the field by even one game, they win, but if there's a two-way tie for first there's a one-game final. If there's a three-or-more-way tie for first, use paper tiebreakers to find the top 2 and give them a one-game final. It's better than giving the ninth- and tenth-place teams only 5 real games, which happens in the 2x5 into 4/4/2 rebracket format.

You could do 2x5 into 4/6, which would give the bottom 6 teams 10 games each (just leave ties unbroken or go paper tiebreaker).

Nine games (because of the prelim bye). The thing is, any schedule that starts with 2x5 runs the risk of a team going 3-1 in the prelims and getting knocked out in a circle of death.Fred wrote:You could do 2x5 into 4/6, which would give the bottom 6 teams 10 games each (just leave ties unbroken or go paper tiebreaker).

Re: Barrington Invitational Tournament IX (3.17.12)
I would suggest two five-team brackets splitting into top 3 and bottom 2 with the top 6 teams playing 3 rounds of crossover playoffs (e.g., team A1 plays teams B3, B2, and B1 in that order) and the bottom 4 teams playing a 3-round round robin. This gives every team 7 games in 8 rounds and leaves you two packets for a final/grudge match/whatever.
This setup also works if you have 11 or 12 teams; just have the bottom 5 or 6 teams play crossover matches instead of a full round robin and then the top teams get 8 games in 8 rounds and the bottom teams get 7 or 8 games in 8 rounds.

Re: Barrington Invitational Tournament IX (3.17.12)
Field is closed with 10 "Challenge" teams, 24 "standard" teams, and 20 "B" teams, for a grand total of 27 game rooms.
* "Challenge" bracket will be a full round-robin. Clearing the field by one game will be enough to claim the championship. A two-way tie (by win-loss) for first place will be played off with packet 10. A circle of death will result in PPB controlled to determine which two teams play a half packet for the right to play the top PPBC team on the last half packet.
* "Standard" bracket will be 4 pools of 6 teams, with the 4 pool winners and top 4 non-pool winners advancing based on PPB controlled.
Those 8 will play in 2 playoff pools of 4 (attempts will be made to avoid rematches where possible), with the two pool winners advancing to a championship match (round 9), and the two runners-up playing for the 3rd place trophy. The remaining 16 teams will be placed in 4 pools of 4 and play a round-robin with the winner taking home a consolation trophy.
* "B" bracket will be 4 pools of 5 teams, with each team playing a cross-over match. The cross-over result will not be used to determine pool records, but the PPB will count. The top 2 from each pool will play in two playoff pools of 4 , with the winner of those pools playing for the championship, while the runners-up will play for the 3rd place trophy . The remaining 12 teams will play in 3 pools of 4 and play a round-robin playoff.

So, if a team buzzes in on tossup 1 and 30s the bonus in this game, it would be in their interest to avoid potentially lowering their PPB by buzzing in again, since winning or losing this game is meaningless.Moving Day wrote: The cross-over result will not be used to determine pool records, but the PPB will count.

Re: Barrington Invitational Tournament IX (3.17.12)
That depends on how he averages PPB across the tournament. If average PPB is found by taking the average of the PPB from each match, that is taking the 5 PPBs from the first five matches and dividing by 5, then Matt is correct. If average PPB is found by taking the total number of PPB from the day and dividing by the total number of bonuses heard, which is what SQBS does, then there is no significant advantage or disadvantage from buzzing in during the rest of the match. In other words, I don't think this is an issue.

Re: Barrington Invitational Tournament IX (3.17.12)
My scenario is simplistic but there are definitely cases where valuing ppb over the win can lead to that sort of degenerate play being rational. My recommendation is certainly not to count wins and losses in cross-bracket games, but to avoid counting anything from that game at all. Either treat it as a way for teams to hear questions instead of having a true bye, or don't play it and cut your slowest moderator.

You could do the 2 groups of 5 and the crossover game (for 5 games) and then have the top 8 make a single-elimination bracket (3 more games).

Re: Barrington Invitational Tournament IX (3.17.12)
Wait, are we still talking about the 10-team challenge bracket? And having two teams go home after lunch? Not happening. Everyone is getting 8 games, barring forfeits in the afternoon. Meantime, it looks like, on the advice of my deputy TD, we're having that crossover game in the "B" bracket be nothing more than an exhibition, though I still think the PPB should count for breaking tie records.Nick wrote:You could do the 2 groups of 5 and the crossover game (for 5 games) and then have the top 8 make a single-elimination bracket (3 more games).

Many kudos to Mr. Price and company for running a smooth tournament with 50+ teams there. My teams had a ton of fun.

Re: Barrington Invitational Tournament IX (3.17.12)
Thanks, Michael! I'm whipped! Stats are posted. The stats are missing a scoresheet from the Keith/Burbank Liberty match in round 8, but we know that Keith won....
Many thanks to all of the people who helped make this possible. From my assistant principal, who has to give up his Saturday away from his family, too, to the excellent corp of moderators I managed to secure, to the high schoolers from St. Viator & Barrington High Schools, and to the statisticians, Kristin Strey, Mike Wong, and deputy tournament director Donald Taylor. "B" Division took too long, partly due to the half-packet tie-breaker needed between Bloomington B and St. Mary's B. Trophies were awarded as follows:
CHALLENGE
1st) Barrington Station A
2nd) Lincolnshire Daniel Wright A*
3rd) Rockford Washington
4th) Barrington Prairie A
*- defeated Washington in a 10th round tiebreaker
STANDARD
1st) Mount Prospect St. Raymond
2nd) River Forest Roosevelt
3rd) Elm Grove (WI) St. Mary's A
4th) Cary JHS
Consolation Champion) Antioch UGS
Other playoff pool winners: New Lenox Martino A, Rockford Keith Country Day, & Crystal Lake Hannah Beardsley
"B"
1st) Elm Grove (WI) St. Mary's B
2nd) Rolling Meadows Plum Grove B
3rd) Lincolnshire Daniel Wright B
4th) Bloomington JHS B
Consolation Pool Winner) Normal Metcalf B

Just faxed our team's copy of the results to you.Moving Day wrote:Thanks, Michael! I'm whipped! Stats are posted. The stats are missing a scoresheet from the Keith/Burbank Liberty match in round 8, but we know that Keith won....
Thank you Coach Price for a wonderful tournament experience. Everything ran smoothly and we appreciated being able to have multiple levels of play for Uber-Competitive, Standard, and B level. Your moderators, particularly those from the University of Illinois circuit, were fantastic and their skill was much appreciated. Thank you again to you, your school, and everyone that contributed to the successful running of the tournament.
We eagerly look forward to Barrington Invitational X next year!
With appreciation,
