NHBB Clarifications

Post by Great Bustard »

1. It is the policy of NHBB not to allow wild cards for Nationals unless a team was unfairly slighted somehow at a Regional qualifier or if the nearest regional got canceled or was over 200 miles away. Otherwise, allowing wild cards is unfair to teams who played, paid, and qualified at Regionals. The same applies to the Bee.
2. NHBB encourages students to play solo or with a friend from their school if the school can't attend. We are cool with pseudonyms to protect students - this also applies at Nationals. Students playing solo only need to pay $25 in the Bowl. Teams of two pay $50. Buzzer discount of $5 still applies. Also, the requirement to bring a reader can often (but not always - check with us first) be waived for students who want to play solo or with a friend. A solo team won our E. Georgia regional earlier this year, and made the semifinals at JV Nationals last year, so don't be intimidated by the thought of playing solo (especially if you're a history player).
3. Middle school teams and students are welcome at all NHBB events this year, and indeed are encouraged to attend. They can also qualify for and compete at Nationals (in the JV division)

What is the situation with chaperones? As there likely will be a local league tournament on the same day as NJ States most of my team, including the coach, will be at that tournament. So do I need to bring an adult in association with the school? And if i attend unofficially does the school still qualify for nationals?

The answer to the second question is an unambiguous yes. To the first, at this tournament, you're fine, since there will be Princeton quizbowl staffers on hand to help. But again, this is on a case by case basis, so please check with me in instances like this, as you did.
