BOAT IV - March 31, 2012 - Hackensack NJ

Post by jonpin »

Bergen County Academies Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce its fourth annual spring competition, the Bergen Open Academic Tournament IV, aka BOAT, to be held at our campus in Hackensack, NJ on March 31, 2012. The tournament will be played in tossup/bonus format, using questions written and edited by players at Ladue Horton Watkins High School in Ladue, MO. Teams will be given the opportunity to play a minimum of 8 games and likely 10, with round-robin preliminaries and (likely) round-robin playoffs, and the top teams will qualify for the PACE National Scholastic Championships in St. Louis, MO in June.
Entry fees are $70 for the first team and $60 for each additional team. Schools will receive $10 off for each functioning buzzer system they provide (limit 3 per school) and $10 for each moderator they bring with them. Payment is not due until the day of the tournaments; checks should be made payable to “Student Activity Fund / Quiz Bowl”.
Registration for this tournament can be done by emailing Jonathan Pinyan at [email protected]. If you wish a paper form of the registration, please contact me or post here.

Thank you, and we hope to see you on March 31!

Three weeks out, field update:

Bergenfield 2
Glen Rock 4
Hunter 4+
Ridgewood 3+
St. Joseph 2+

Total: 15+

I'm gonna cap the field at 24 until I'm sure I have staff to support more than that.

I'm pleased to announce that PACE has pre-designated us a PLATINUM tournament. Granted PACE NSC has filled up, but this is an opportunity for any teams who qualified via gold or standard tournaments to improve their discount by finishing in the top 25% at BOAT.

We will have 5 teams. If it makes the numbers easier, we could also bring just 4.

Go with 3 Ridgewood teams for now, since that seems to be the number we're getting for most tournaments, though a 4th would not at all surprise me. Can middle schoolers in Ridgewood join our team?

As noted in the field update above, the field is now closed at 20 teams. I'll confirm the format in the coming days, but I believe we'll use the following:
Rounds 1-5: Prelim round-robin in 4 pools of 5. Top two from each group advance to championship group, all others advance to one of two six-team consolation groups.
Round 6: Either before or after lunch, ties for admission into championship group will be played off.
Rounds 7-11: In consolation groups, teams compete for 9th place and 15th place via a full round-robin.
Rounds 7-12: In championship group, six rounds of crossover games (one game carries over from the morning).
Round 13+: Ties for second place (advancement to finals), third place (trophy) or fifth place (NSC platinum qualification) will be played off. Advantage final follows.

Hi,

I sent an e-mail to you on March 19 asking to register (to [email protected]), but unfortunately, it looks like it didn't go through. Could you confirm that you didn't receive any registrations from Wissahickon, just to make sure? Thanks.

Whoops, you did in fact send me such an email. You're in the field, which is now locked at 21. I imagine we'll keep the four prelim groups, with an 8-team championship and two equal-size, ranked consolation groups.

Looks like we're down to 2 for this - sorry about that. Just turned out to be a bad weekend for a lot of Ridgewoodites.

I understand. Indian Hills has also dropped out. If we wind up at 18 teams, we'll restructure to 3x6 -> 3x6. If we end up at 19, I'll scramble together a hybrid/house team and stay with 4x5.

Why not 2 pools of 9 and 10?

And then 3 rounds of crossover? This seems like a reasonable option. I'll consider it over the next few days as the field solidifies.

I dunno, I ran a tournament where I had 20 teams and 2 pools of 10, then crossed over the top 2 teams in each pool, and had everybody else play a single game crossover against the other team that placed where they did in the other bracket.

Just for the record, with Glen Rock's moving down to 2 teams and Ridgewood also dropping to 2, Charlie's suggestion was rendered irrelevant. We have 17 teams, and I'll try to scrounge out 18 to fill a 3x6 -> 3x6 format.

Hunter A defeated High Tech A in both games of an advantage final 565-215, 530-325 to win BOAT IV. Hunter B defeated St. Joseph A in a tiebreaker game for third.

More, later, eventually.

Hey, sorry. I'm usually better at posting stats than this, but none of the playoff scores got entered into a computer because we were short staffed and running late. I have scoresheets, but won't have time to enter them until we hit break, so look for staaaaaaaats in the days after Easter. I'll post prelim data in the next day or two, because I think I have all of that. Of note, the top teams were killing it, with Hunter A going 57-for-57 on bonuses in one round, and several teams having PPBs above 25 if I recall correctly.

EDIT: Prelim results
