Duke Spring Invitational - April 7th, 2012

Post by azngod1992 »

Duke University Quizbowl is excited to announce that our annual spring invitational tournament will be hosted on April 7th, 2012. We will be mirroring Yale's BHSAT (Bulldog High School Academic Tournament) set instead of using our usual NAQT IS-Set.

Details:
Start Time: 9AM, Registration at 8:45AM
Location: Biological Sciences Building Room 111, Duke University West Campus.
Tournament Structure: Round Robin followed by rebracketing into playoffs. We will be offering book prizes for the top two teams overall as well as the top 5 individual scorers.
Parking: The Bryan Center lot, located across from the Biological Science Building on Science Drive, will have parking available. Usually, you won't have to pay for parking; however, there is a slight chance there may be a special event occurring, in which case there is also parking along circuit drive that is free.

The fee structure is as follows:
Base fee: $90
Working buzzer system: -$5 each (max of 3)
Moderator: -$5 each
Additional teams: -$5 each
Travel discount: -$10 for travelling over 200 miles to get to us
Minimum fee per team: $60

Please contact [email protected] for registration. All checks should be made out to "Duke College Bowl"

Field Update:

Raleigh Charter - 4
East Chapel Hill - 2
Cave Spring - 1
Saint Mary's - 2
Johnston County Early College Academy - 1 (?)
Arendell Parrott Academy - 1
Christiansburg High School - 1

Total: 11-12
Playoff and other details are posted below in the thread.

Saint Mary's hopes to bring a team, but having this on Holy Saturday may affect attendance, as that's the middle of a long weekend for the team.

Since so many of us are going away for Spring Break next week, we'd like to get the information out to our students this week while we still have them. Any more details on scheduling? Number of rounds? Details on playoff format?

Right now I'm telling my students to meet at Biological Sciences by 8:45 and prepare to play until you go home.

Mr. Grunden,

Sorry about the late response. But, right now, we're looking at a full round robin between all participating teams, at about 7 or 8 rounds, if you bring three teams and East Chapel Hill brings 2 (obviously less rounds, if we get less teams). We expect to be done at about 4-4:30 pmish, with a generous lunch break.

With the current number of teams, there is really no sense in running playoff brackets, so we will use an advantaged playoff system depending on how the top team finishes relative to the rest of the field.
If top team clears the round robin by two or more wins: you win!
If top team clears the round robin by one win: we play an advantaged final, i.e, top team has to win only one of two games to win.
If two teams are tied for first place: winner of a single final game wins.

If we get a substantial number of new registrations in the next week or so, we will probably divide the initial round robin into two separate round robins and then rebracket into playoff brackets.

Hope that answers all your questions. Also, can you please confirm the number of teams you're bringing (same with East Chapel Hill)?

Ok, so it looks like we're just gonna run a full round robin at this point, assuming no new teams register. It'll probably turn out to be 8 or 9 games, depending on the teams that show up.

It seems like we will be short a reader or two for at least part of the day. Would any coaches/parents be interested in volunteering? We will be offering a discount to the entry as well as free lunch!

The current field is as listed in the first post. I have contacted the teams that have said they may bring a team (i.e, the ones marked with a ?) in order to finalize the list of teams.

Thank you for everyone who came today. I'm terribly sorry about room reservation situation, the Duke Card office was incredibly terrible about unlocking/locking the rooms today. Again, I apologize for any inconvenience. Please accept my sincere apologies, and I will personally make sure such a situation does not occur again. I apologize the hectic nature of the tournament.

Christiansburg finished first in a circle of death with a PPG in the playoffs of 395
East Chapel Hill A fiinished second in the playoff bracket with a PPG of 383

Stats will be posted as soon as I finish resolving some issues involving players who played partial games. Expect them by Sunday night/Monday morning.

Top 5 scorers were:
Michael from Cave Springs
Matt from Christansburg
Will from East Chapel Hill
Jacob from East Chapel Hill
Dan from Raleigh Charter

Also, Raleigh Charter, did you guys pay me or our treasurer before you guys left? Just so you guys know, the total is 60 x 4 = $240. I have personally emailed Mr. Grunden about this as well.

Hey, I would love to be first, but if I recall correctly, you named us 2nd at the tournament? I would appreciate a little clarification :)

Unless there was a mistake at the tournament, Christianburg actually came in first. Thanks for running this!

Sorry, too sleep-deprived to process anything. But yes, you guys are right, Christiansburg finished first, East Chapel Hill finished 2nd.

Seems like the tournament went pretty well. Sorry we couldn't make it. Nobody was interested in taking a day out of their break to come.

I don't think the DukeCard office managed to unlock doors for a tournament once ever while I was there, so don't feel too bad. (This is why you find a graduate student whose ID will open all the classrooms.)

Actually took less time than expected. Stats are here: http://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/95 ... onal_2012/. Just to clarify, this is playoffs + prelims combined. Christiansburg was first because 3 teams went 2-1 in the top playoff bracket (along with east chapel hill A and cave springs), but they had the highest PPG. Please feel free to email me if there are any errors within the stats. Note, Christansburg also had the highest PPB, so they would have won either way had that been used as a tiebreaker.
