3 Day Ridgewood Summer Invitational: July 6-8, Ridgewood, NJ

Post by Great Bustard »

Hi Everyone,
I'm pleased to announce that Ridgewood High School will be hosting the Ridgewood Summer Open on July 6-8 at (update 6/26) Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Ridgewood, NJ. These tournaments are open to everyone from middle school to those long since graduated from college. BF Middle School has generously given us the run of the place from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon to host copious amounts of quizbowl. Here's a current tentative plan, subject to change pending interest:

Friday afternoon/evening (doors open at 4:00pm, opening meeting at 4:30, tournament begins at 4:45) -
Open packet submission tournament (i.e. make your own teams - no need to limit yourself to who was/is on your high school or college team). Please power mark the set, and write to an HSNCT level of difficulty. Keep tossups to 525 characters or less, please, including spaces. Distribution is:
4/4 Lit (1 US, 1 European, 1 non Western, 1 your choice)
4/4 Science (1 Bio, 1 Chem, 1 Physics, 1 something else)
4/4 History (1 US, 1 Modern or High Medieval European [1000<], 1 non Western, 1 ancient defined as until 1000 CE anywhere)
1/1 Geography
1/1 Current Events
1/1 Other Social Science (psych, anthro, soc, etc.)
2/2 Religion, Myth, Philosophy
1/1 Art (including performing arts)
1/1 Music
1/1 Trash
1/1 Your Choice of 1 Lit, Science, or History

Saturday (doors open 9am, opening meeting 9:15, start time 9:40) - edited for clarity @ 2:55pm on 6/14
Mirror of ATTACK (i.e. the set Adam Silverman wrote) - teams solely by high school affiliation, including for those long and not so long since graduated (with the exception of current HS coaches who can play with their team members!). There will be some sort of divisional classification so as not to frighten the children. Note: there will be no other set on offer, except for various side events, but the issue there is securing space. We'll play all side events by ear.

Sunday (doors open 9am, opening meeting 9:15, start time 9:40) - edited for clarity @ 2:55pm on 6/14
Ridgewood Summer Set - this is being written as we speak. I will edit everything non-science. If anyone would like to help with science editing, please let me know. This set will be power marked and be of moderate high school difficulty. Teams will be done by high school and/or college affiliation; graduating seniors can play with either their high school or college. Those who are beyond graduating senior in age, though, have to play with their college affiliation (either undergrad or grad). The college division can also have teams that consist of alumni, however, these would be classified under a different set of teams from all undergrad. Provided there is enough interest to run a college division here, I will edit the version of the set that division uses to be somewhat more difficult.
Rough Distribution for this (will have exact by June 25, but this is an RMP/Fine Arts heavy set, given the tastes of Ridgewood QB)
4/4 Lit
4/4 History
4/4 Science
3/3 Fine Arts
1/1 Social Science
2.5/2.5 RMP
1.5/1.5 Geo,Trash,Current Events

Costs & Other Stuff:
For a team on Friday (we need 6 packets minimum to make this work), the cost would be $10 per person on a team if you submit a packet by June 25. $15 per person if you submit a packet by July 1. $20 per person if you don't submit a packet, or submit one after July 1.
For the Saturday ATTACK mirror, cost is $80 per team.
For the Sunday Ridgewood Summer Set, cost is $70 per team.
Any solo team pays 50% of the cost for either Saturday or Sunday (or both if you play both); there is no discount for teams of two.
-$10 per reader, per tournament (we reserve the right to limit these based on need)
Teams are guaranteed six rounds on Friday, and ten on Saturday and Sunday.
There might be side events on Saturday evening or Friday afternoon before things kick off. If you have an idea for one, let me know.
We will have pizza, soda, etc. available for purchase.
There are no buzzer system discounts, as we will have about 40 systems on hand by then.
Players who need accommodation can get accommodation for $15 a night with kids on Ridgewood's team. Otherwise, there are probably lodging choices somewhat farther away (~10-15 minutes drive) for roughly $25 per person per night, tax included.
Each tournament is capped at 80 teams.

Read on Friday: Hunter (3 readers), Kara Vo, David Madden
Read on Saturday: Andrew Ibendahl, (Ridgewooders: Thomas, Zoe, Abdullah, Justin, David Madden (if absolutely needed)) Susan Madden,
Read on Sunday: Ridgewood HS team

Also, on matters of transportation - people can easily take the train to this, as Ridgewood has a very busy station in the middle of town. NYC is less than 1 hour away, as is Newark Airport. For both Newark Airport and NYC, you need to take NJ transit (NOT Amtrak) to Secaucus, and then switch to almost (but not every, so be careful) westbound train (the direction is actually north, but NJ transit calls it westbound) on either the Bergen County or Main Lines then get off at Ridgewood. We can pick you up at the station.
If you're going to fly in, use Newark Airport if at all possible.
Finally, just in general, sorry about the short notice here - it's taken a while for the school to give us the dates for this. Hopefully many teams can still make it.

I might be able to interest my kids in this, or at least maybe 2 or 3 of them, for either Saturday or Sunday.

Odd question for you: may i play on a team with them? I am an alumnus of CR, if that counts for anything.

Or, if you need moderators, you definitely know that i would be happy to do that.

I'm certainly interested. I have a feeling that I would be the only player on a potential Kings Park team for the ATTACK mirror, but I'll have to wait and see.

Edit: 6/30
The answer for this specific person is now obviously no. Other alumni of high schools may play with current students in the Expert division on Saturday.

So yeah, Ardsley will be here in some form, probably with two teams for Saturday and one for Sunday, and I'll read/staff Sunday. I'm looking for teammates for Friday night.

All this sounds excellent, but I might be busy (that's 4th of July weekend so I might be in London). I attended the Maggie Walker mirror of the superb ATTACK set, so I'd be interested in there being an alternate set for Saturday. Put me down as being interested pending confirmation on the date. I doubt I'll get team mates from my high school team (but you never know) but hopefully can play this as a high school team (just graduated seniors) from Brown 2016 (Adam Horowitz is close at least) and get a jump start on playing together as a team.

Yes! One of the potential appeals of this tournament on Saturday is to have coaches play with current students from the schools they attended, or in the case of coaches who coach at the school they went to, their current players. For Sunday, the idea is that alumni need to play with their college affiliation. So, in other words, you could play with CR on Saturday, but on Sunday, you'd have to play with U Delaware alums/students. And Friday is entirely open, so play with whomever you like then.
That's exciting. I think then we'll be there on Saturday but I need to talk to more kids to make sure I have three I can take.

I hereby express interest in all 3 events. A high school teammate of mine may come with me, too. Since I'll be graduating from high school this year, I take it I may play with him in all three events; is this correct?

Separately from Robert Pond, I'll express Kings Park interest for Sunday's event. As of now I'll be alone but I will attempt to get a few people for this

EDIT: I misread the rules about affiliations. Could a Mish-moshey team of KP alumni/students compete under the most appropriate division given where I would be placed?

I am actually considering coming to this as it is next to my original home town of Glen Rock....

But I do have a question. Since one of the goals is to allow coached to play with their players (past or present), would it be possible to for us to affiliate with the school we work at? So for example, I am the coach of Wilson SHS in Washington DC, but didn't go there, can I affilate with them to play with my players and/or former players from Wilson or am I bound to good old Glen Rock HS?

Kellenberg will try to bring one or two standard division teams for Saturday.

I can moderate on Saturday.

Edit: Not looking good for this. I can still moderate but Kellenberg may not have a high school team.

There is a strong likelihood for a Bergen Academies team on Saturday. There is a decent likelihood for a Bergen Academies team on Sunday, but most likely not a WUSTL team.

something ambiguous wrote:Is there an amtrak station that I could take to get into or near Ridgewood, or at least a place where I can get on the NJ transit?
As Dave posted above, if taking Amtrak, you must get off at either Newark Penn or New York Penn. You can then take NJ Transit on the Northeast corridor to Secaucus Jct (this is "north" of Newark and "south" of NY), where you must transfer to the Main or Bergen Line. Most* Main and Bergen Line trains stop at the Ridgewood station, which is really close to the high school.

*-You don't need to worry about Main vs. Bergen Line, what you need to worry about are the few express trains that don't stop until Ramsey or Suffern, NY.

2 Quick Updates:

1. I'm going to allow coaches to play with their current teams on Saturday - they thus have the option of playing either with the team they are currently coaching or the school where they attended high school. This is a moot point for Friday (where teams can be of any conglomeration) and Sunday (where I'm maintaining a strict high school / college split - coaches must play for the college they attended).
2. I've increased the distribution to 21/21 - adding 1 "Your Choice" of Sci, History, or Lit. The packets themselves will still be 4/4/4 across those 3 subject areas, but this will help avoid repeats and make my life as editor much easier.

I'll also talk to my high school team and see if any of them are available.

I saw in the opening post that you mentioned side events as a possibility. If there is ample interest among people who did not play it already I could probably run a side event on the YMIR mythology set, as I noticed that it doesn't seem like anyone else has suggested anything else.

Why couldn't it be this weekend, I literally was just in New Jersey for two days =P

I'm going to tentatively express interest in attending although I doubt I'll actually be able to get out there (Like Daniel, I've also played ATTACK so I wouldn't be able to do that anyways). If I don't, I could probably submit a packet anyways that you could use for finals or tiebreakers or whatever on Friday.

Cool, any help would be great. My dad, believe it or not, was on the Loyola quiz bowl team in the 1960's (he did the same Chicago variant of It's Academic that Hillary Clinton did back in the day). He would be floored if his alma mater were represented.

Expressing interest from Stony Brook University and Ward Melville High School (expert division, since we'd have graduates).

My film tournament will be ready by this date if there's any interest in running that and if there's no significant field overlap with KABO (I doubt it is just eyeballing it).

It is written for mature audiences, though, so there's profanity and references to R-rated films if that frightens the children.

I do have a question, I don't think I quite understand the breakdown completely.

We have three people (including me) on our team that should be able to play all three days, since we went to the same high school (Ward Melville) and we're all in the same college (Stony Brook). But for Saturday, one of our players is playing on a different high school team because he went to a different high school (King's Park). So if we get a current high schooler or graduating senior to play with us on Saturday, can he or she stay on our team for Sunday too, or is that not okay because they wouldn't be going to our college with us, and our team wouldn't consist entirely of people from Ward Melville?

I know that's probably confusing, so basically my question is, on Sunday can we have a mix of people from our high school and people from our college?

From my understanding, it seems like the answer is yes but that high schooler would have to play in the expert division, which is something that you'd have to bring up with that student.

Friday: Anything goes - it's a true open, so form teams with whomever you like. On the off chance we get enough teams of completely disparate ability, I will consider doing a divisional breakdown, but this appears both unlikely and unnecessary at present.
Saturday: Teams are by high school affiliation only, including for everyone who has graduated from high school. So in other words, anyone on your team has to have gone to Ward Melville with the exception of the current coach of Ward Melville's team (if there is one).
Sunday: Teams are by current affiliation for anyone still in high school or undergraduates in college. Class of 2012 high school seniors can either play with their high school teams or college teams. Class of 2012 college seniors can either play with their undergrad or grad (if they are going to grad school) affiliations. Alumni (i.e. adults with no current affiliation) can play with either their grad or undergrad affiliations, but teams must declare if they have such players on them.

That all said, there is a discount for playing solo, so that's an option for someone who is a Ward Melvillite, but not a Stony Brookite, or vice versa. I hope this clears up any confusion here.

GNS is interested in bringing a team and a moderator for Friday, and an expert division team for Saturday (possibly adding a standard div team).

Two quick updates. We are figuring out which team members can host out-of-towners this weekend, and will post availability on a first-come, first-served basis by Tuesday. Also by then, I expect to have a formal announcement regarding tournament location on Sunday. We will definitely find a spot for it, though.

I know this is anal and all, but given recent dustups involving the IHSA, I feel it is important to note that Loyola has not expressed any interest in this tournament and should not be marked down as such. A student from Loyola has expressed interest as an individual, but he in no way officially represents the school, nor should he be referred to as such.

Right, it's just that for that tournament, even if students play on their own, they're required to play with their school teams. If no one else comes from their school, then they're still grouped that way. For disclaimer purposes, though, no schools who are listed above should be construed as being officially sanctioned by their administration for participating (although I'm sure that most, if not all, would have no problem with their students taking part). Schools, rather than individuals are listed for convenience purposes, since that's how the tournament is being run. Likewise, don't expect that schools listed here will be represented by their usual A teams (whether from last year or this coming year).
If anyone has a real problem with this, let me know, and I'm fine with changing the team name to name of said student who expressed interest.

Yeah, given our past involvement with the IHSA, it is clear that they will not see it that way. Please just change it so that our school is not listed.

Given that Matt's the head coach at Loyola, he probably is the person to listen to regarding this issue.

What will be the format for Friday's tournament? Just a round robin with teams sitting out when their round is read followed by a final if necessary? And I guess you will be writing the Finals packet(s), Dave?
