You may want to add the PSAT date of 10/20 to the list.

LIFT would like to claim a date, but first we would like to run a little poll to see which would be more preferential to our local schools.

We could run LIFT on 10/20/12 (PSAT date) or on 11/10/12 (same date as HFT). We are leaning more to the 10/20 date, but please opine....to me at bronigel at kellenberg.org.

Thanks and have a great summer!!

Stony Brook's plans to host, well, any tournament at all have fallen through, so if there are any new good quiz bowl tournaments on LI this year it most likely won't be through us.
That said, I'll probably be able to moderate for any tournament on the island and maybe some in New Jersey.

Irvington plans on hosting something at some point, as an introductory pyramidal tournament to Westchester. We would prefer to use an easy set like an A set or mirror a set that isn't too hard. But as all the A sets will be used at some point and I don't know what sets are the best to use for introductory tournaments. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would think LIST III or even an HSAPQ set would be great options that have good track records of accessibility.

We've used hsapq sets at CR the last three years with great success and with many compliments by younger and less experienced teams.

Don't be so sure all the A sets will get used in the area at some point. Only 2 (112A at HHHW and 114A at Kings Park) got used in the area last year while the other three weren't. Although the other 3 were used in New York, they were all upstate New York and had no overlapping teams with the Lower Hudson/NJ/Long Island area.

i was under the impression that there were only 3 A sets. anyway Scarsdale is planning a tournament, so if they want to use an a set then we're probably not going to stop them. does anyone know how i would go about acquiring a HSAPQ packet to use for the tournament? i was leaning towards HSAPQ anyway

Scarsdale, should we be able to secure a packet set, would be hosting an NAQT tournament on January 12. I'm not sure when things qualify to be put on the schedule, but that's at least our plan for now.

EDIT: We are also bidding to host Metro NYC- NAQT States April 13. Same constraints as above apply.

NHBB Northern New Jersey (i.e. the tournament at Ridgewood that I will direct) will be Jan. 19. I was hoping for a fall date, but the only 2 that would have worked for the school were 11/10 and 11/17 which are both already claimed. The NJ State Championships will likely be in late February or early March, so at least we're looking at 6-8 weeks between the two, as opposed to 3 last year.
Other NHBB tournaments in the area will include Long Island, Connecticut, Westchester, Southern NJ, a New York City tournament on a Sunday, and possibly a second South Jersey, a Rockland/Orange County tournament, a Brooklyn or Queens tournament, and a Staten Island tournament. These are dependent on finding host schools, directors, dates, etc. Updates will be posted here and at historybowl.com as confirmed dates come in.

I'm not sure if BOAT V will exist in the spring. I'm also not yet sure if BAJAC II will be held; but if so, it'll probably be a Saturday in October or November. Our middle school math team meets on Sunday, so that's why we'd lean towards Saturday, but it will depend on other school events, including all of our school's open houses.

Hunter is looking at March 2 for Prison Bowl VI and October 27 for our Fall Novice Tournament. Happy summer, all!

EDIT: Should have read that more carefully - I'll try and move our October date to avoid conflict with FaCT.

Great Neck South is looking into planning its very own tournament this upcoming school year. Dates are being discussed, so nothing is finalized yet. Probably going to a housewrite tournament. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Don't housewrite; at the very least, not on your own. Your team is still relatively young and inexperienced, although you do have a strong program developing. Look to collaborate with another school (this thread would be useful to coordinate with other) that wants to write, work with them to find an experienced editor, and put in the time necessary to create a good set. See this for just how much work it takes to do a housewrite.

My advice is to, instead of housewriting, use a set from HSAPQ, which consistently turns out high-quality sets but didn't have a ton of mirrors in the NY/NJ region last year. This would allow GNS to devote more time to actually running your first tournament ever smoothly, which is never as easy as it seems. In the meantime, you could start writing tossups as a team and starting that long journey to becoming good writers. It takes a long time to be capable of writing a good set, and especially for a young team, it often makes sense to wait a year or two and gain necessary experience.

Please do not housewrite. Read this - viewtopic.php?f=117&t=13255 - and run any of the billion other existing sets that aren't getting mirrored in New York, please.

Ryan and Charlie both interpreted your post as "we're going to write our own set," while I interpreted it as "we're going to mirror somebody else's housewrite, rather than buy an NAQT or HSAPQ set." Clarify, please?

We were planning on writing our own packets, but based off of what Ryan and Charlie have both said, we may look into buying sets. With that being said, we still may be writing tossups and bonuses for our own tournament.

Ryan and Charlie, thank you for the input. I'll see what my captains say about it.

Two schools that don't really communicate with other teams (including one that's been conflicting with Prison Bowl consistently with no apparent regrets) scheduling for the same day? No surprise there. (EDIT: Now that I've heard about what happened with Bloomfield's scheduling, I regret saying this. And hey, it doesn't conflict with Prison Bowl this time!)
Did anyone from NAQT actually look at the requests before confirming both of these tournaments?
And I'm going to third the notion that the guys at GNS should not be writing their own tournament.

To make matters complicated, Yale has recently found out that its traditional weekend for BHSAT is blocked off. We too were therefore planning to host on March 2, and were going to announce as such this week, but didn't see Mr. Young's most recent post until we were just about to do so and it was too late.

Mr. Young, please respond to my communication soon. We hope to have many NY/NJ teams in attendance by finding a proper date on which most NY/NJ teams aren't committed elsewhere, while keeping college tournament date strictures in mind, and will keep the public updated as details emerge.

Matt - sorry for not getting back to you sooner. We will move Prison Bowl, please go ahead with the March 2 plan for Bulldog. And expect to see us there!

I'm not sure where either of our tournaments will go now, and I missed that there is no more FNT. So hopefully we will mirror SCOP sometime in the Fall and PB may or may not conflict with Bloomfield again. We'll figure it out.

Ed, for now you can take Prison Bowl off the list and we'll figure out the date at some future date.

I have removed Prison Bowl from its March 2nd claim, and since Coach Young requested this in deference to Yale's annual BHSAT, I have tentatively placed the Bulldog in Hunter's vacated March 2nd spot and I will leave it there pending word from Matt Jackson about Yale's preferred date.

EDIT: Matt has just posted on the New England Date Claim Site that the BHSAT is tentatively scheduled for March 2nd, so I will keep it listed as tentative on this calendar as well unless & until informed otherwise.

Thanks, Ed. Without my glasses on, I did not even notice that I was in the New England forum!

Hunter will stake a claim to Nov 10 for our Fall tournament and Apr 6 for Prison Bowl.

EDIT: I meant Oct 13 for the Fall tournament - not sure how Oct 13 became Nov 10 in my head...summer thinking abilities. Sorry for the mixup.

There's very little chance Stuy will be allowed to host a tournament. I could try self immolation in front of the administrators. Don't worry about me getting burned; they'll be pissing on me like always, so it should get put out pretty quickly.

Coach Young,

October 13 and April 6 have been claimed for Hunter College HS for your Fall & Prison Bowl Tournaments, as per your request.

I look forward to the likelihood that I'll finally be able to attend a Prison Bowl. Do you know what set you're using for your Fall Novice tournament, Stephen?

I hope to announce BAJAC II before the end of our summer camp. I'll try to avoid our circuit's HS tournaments, but there are other local date conflicts I need to watch out for as well.

Any news on the conflict between Bloomfield & Livingston, each using separate NAQT IS Sets (124 & 122, respectively) on the same date, March 16, 2013?

It'll be a mirror of SCOP.

We will be using the same eligibility rules as our FNT mirror last year, so it'll be open to anyone in their first or second year of HS quiz bowl who haven't gone to NSC or HSNCT yet.

We'll make an official announcement sometime soon. Announced here.

first or second year of HS quiz bowl
Does :chip: count as HS quiz bowl? Does NHBB? I am asking because there are a couple of players that are eligible if they do but aren't if they don't.

For this tournament, no. We're counting HS quiz bowl as anything NAQT, mACF, or of that sort. Single-subjects like NHBB don't count.

MIT's September 22 tournament is now officially happening (thread here). It's worth noting, though, that we're using the same set as the SHP Pirate Open (IS-119A).

SHP is planning to try to come to MIT to play this set before we host it the next weekend!

That's such a coincidence, my team was planning on doing that too. (just kidding)
