Chapelle HS Fall QB Tournament (9/29/12, Metairie, LA)

Post by Kevin »

On behalf of Archbishop Chapelle High School I am announcing our First Annual Fall Quiz Bowl Tournament. The tournament will take place on Saturday, September 29th. Registration will be from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m., with tournament rounds beginning at approximately 9:15. Coffee and donuts will be provided in the morning. There will be an hour-long lunch break at approximately 12:30; several fast food places are within a five-minute drive of the school. While the exact format will depend upon the number of teams involved, we will have a round-robin in the morning. Afternoon rounds will probably include rebracketing to provide teams with additional games against teams of similar ability levels. Trophies will be provided to the top-finishing teams and individual players. Afternoon rounds should conclude at approximately 3:30, not including any tiebreaking playoffs that may be needed. We expect that everything should be finished by 4:30 at the latest.

Fees: The base fee for each school will be $45. Each additional team from a school is $35. We will also provide a $10 discount for each working buzzer system (minimum eight working buzzers), with a maximum of two buzzer system discounts per school. You may pay with cash or check on the day of the tournament. Checks should be made payable to “Archbishop Chapelle High School.”

Questions: We will be using NAQT’s introductory invitational series (formerly known as A-sets) questions, packet set IS-119A. Standard untimed 20/20 tossup/bonus format. If you have attended or will be attending any tournaments outside of Louisiana, please ensure that those tournaments are not using the same set. NAQT’s rules may be found at http://naqt.com/rules.html. Sample questions are available at http://naqt.com/samples/.

Location: Chapelle HS is in Metairie, just off I-10. More information about which rooms we will be using will be available at a later date.

To register, please e-mail me at [email protected] with the number of teams you will be bringing and whether you are bringing any buzzer systems. We may have to cap the number of teams depending upon the number of staff we have available; priority will be given to the teams registering the earliest. The deadline to register is Friday, September 21st.

I'm planning on it. I'll probably provide the packets for free, but if printing costs won't allow that I may charge a small fee.

Updates:

Location: We will be holding the tournament on the 2nd floor of our main building. Enter the campus from Veterans Blvd. Drive straight through the parking lot in front. There will be a round building on your left. Go past that and keep driving until you reach the next large parking lot, and park there. We will have signs to help direct you to the rooms.

Format: we have 22 teams signed up. We will split into three pools of 8/7/7 teams. Each team will play the other teams in its pool in the morning rounds (for a total of 6 or 7 games). The top two teams in each pool will advance to the championship pool and play the top two teams from each of the other brackets (for a total of four more games; you won't play the team you already played in your pool). The 3rd and 4th place teams will play the other 3rd and 4th place teams, and so on down the line. If teams remain tied for any of our team trophies (1st place overall, 2nd place overall, or top JV team), we will have a one-game playoff. Any unusual situations (three-way ties or anything like that) will be dealt with should the need arise, but may involve some sort of play-off over a shortened set of questions, or, if absolutely necessary, a tiebreaker based on points per game. If teams in the preliminary pools finish tied for 2nd and 3rd, they will play a half-game playoff to determine who advances to the championship bracket. Ties among lower-finishing teams will be broken by points per game. Each team will play at least nine games; some teams will play eleven games, assuming no tiebreakers are necessary.

Trophies: we will have team trophies for the champions, the 2nd place team, and the JV champions. Teams comprised entirely of 10th-graders & younger students will be eligible to win the JV trophy. We will also have individual trophies for the top 4 scorers, as well as the top scorer from each grade level. Individual trophies will be based upon stats from the morning rounds and will be presented at the conclusion of the lunch break.

Rules: A few notes for teams who may be unfamiliar with the NAQT format:
1. Toss-ups & bonuses only.
2. Toss-ups are typically worth 10 points. Interrupting the question with an incorrect answer will result in -5 for the team that buzzes in. (Note: this only applies to the first team to interrupt with the incorrect answer; the second team, if they also interrupt and give an incorrect answer, does not receive a -5. Also, each question has a "power mark." If a player interrupts before that mark and gives a correct answer, he or she will receive 15 points instead of 10. During the question players will not know where the power mark is; the moderator will tell you whether a correct response is worth 10 or 15 points. After the moderator finishes the question, the teams will have three seconds to buzz in. For computational math questions, players will have ten seconds to buzz in.
3. No rebuttals/bouncebacks on bonuses. Only the team which answered the toss-up gets to answer the accompanying bonus questions. All bonus questions are three parts, with each part worth 10 points each. Teams will have five seconds to answer each bonus part; after four seconds, the moderator will ask for an answer, and then the captain should give the answer if he/she has not already done so. The moderator will say whether the answer is correct or not; if it is incorrect, the moderator will give the correct answer and then move on to the remaining bonus parts.
4. If a game is tied, there will be a three-toss-up overtime. Each toss-up will be scored normally, and whichever team is ahead after three questions will be the winner. If it is still tied, it will go to sudden death, still with the normal scoring rules (i.e. interrupting and giving an incorrect answer will result in a loss).

That's an impressive turnout, and quite a few solid teams in the field. Good job.

Playoff standings available here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... /playoffs/

Thanks to all the teams who came. I'm sorry things ran a more slowly than we'd all have liked, but I hope you enjoyed the questions and the tournament.

Note: neither the prelim nor playoff stats include tiebreaking half-games between Lusher A and Lafayette for one playoff spot, and Dutchtown A and Lusher B for another. Nor do they include the Jesuit A-Jesuit B tiebreaker championship half-game.

The performance at this tournament is leagues better than anything I saw last year. I'm glad everything went well!

Yes. And all were from the metro New Orleans area except for Lafayette, Anacoco, and Dutchtown.

I was very impressed with the teams that came to Chapelle Saturday--the usual suspects (Jesuit, Franklin), but also some schools that I had not really seen before (Lafayette, Lusher) that ran right with the top teams. I should also note that Kevin and Chapelle did a great job running the tournament, which was by far the biggest non-LAAC event that I've attended since moving to Louisiana.
