The reason I haven't released multiplayer yet is for scalability issues. I'm still trying to optimize a lot of things. I'll hopefully release it by July.

To continue with the often hilarious answer line acceptance algorithm, I was marked correct for giving "Symphony in F" for "Symphony in D minor", and "B flat" for "E flat".

For some reason, the database hardly works at all for me. I can pull up the site (i've tried Chrome, Safari, and Firefox), but when I type something in the search box and click search, nothing happens.

I'll second this. The reader doesn't seem to be working, either. Is this a server-side issue?

This has always happened to me off and on, but it's happened several times in the last few days. The Database is a great place and I'm getting frustrated that it's not working properly.

I just tried on a Windows OS. It still didn't work in FF, but it worked in IE. I was using a university computer, which didn't have chrome, so I couldn't test that.

The new UI is interesting. I haven't tried multiplayer mode yet, but the bright blues are a little distracting. I think the "advanced search" function is missing, and a very minor issue is that you can't click the links at the bottom until a query has been searched.

Maybe it's a more internal issue on my end, but I tried to look up "Wise Blood" today during my class where we were watching the movie based on the book, and I got the first result as the novel by O'Connor (which is what I wanted) but then 800+ additional results of various crap. I realize Safari for the iPhone may not be the smoothest, but it worked excellent on the old db.

Search is working, but not properly. Searching Arthur Miller comes up with King Arthur, Le Morte d'Arthur, President Arthur, and MacArthur before getting to the original query, which is understandable but annoying.

Any word on this? I know people are busy but just wanted to make sure it was not just me still having this problem. Trying to get my team to use the database to study but not having great results right now because searching is next to impossible.

When searching Of Mice and Men, over thirty thousand results are returned. When searching As I Lay Dying, almost five thousand are returned. Etc., etc. That does not come down to ignoring a few bad returns - that comes to mining for the very few questions you are looking for in a giant heap.

I feel like you guys didn't even try to find a solution. What it seems like is happening is that it searches each word in the query individually. How do you solve this? Search just the most prominent word. For example, "As I Lay Dying" gives almost 5000 results. If you search "Dying," you get 12. Searching "Mice" gives 10 results.

There are plenty of searches where this technique doesn't work, and I feel like some results are getting left out still, but the database is far from useless.

Thanks for the advice. Never thought to try searching less words to achieve fewer results - was counter intuitive to me at the time. Much appreciated!

When i use the search function sometimes the page doesn't allow me to scroll down without it springing back up, it has exclusively occurred when I received exactly 4 results. It isn't actually that annoying because the majority of the 4th tossup is usually visible without scrolling depending on the length of the other questions, but just a note for when you look back to fix everything up.

There are a lot of glitches with the db that can be worked around. For example, when searching multiple things in a row, the db will occasionally tell you there are 0 results, or begin with results 11-20 or other weird things like that. I've always fixed it by just clicking the search tab at the top, and trying again.

If your cursor is still blinking in the search box, it won't let you scroll. Click somewhere else on the page first.

After using Quizbowl DB for a while, I've noticed two prominent bugs:

1. I can't scroll down a page when there are 8 results.
2. There is no "prev" button on a page if there are only 2 pages of results.

I'm using the latest version of Google Chrome on Mac OS X.

Regarding the first glitch, it seems to happen depending on my window size. When I set my browser window to a bit shorter than usual, I'm also unable to scroll down on a page with 7 results.

When I search an item and go to the 2nd page of results (or 3rd page, etc.), then search a different item, I get sent to the 2nd page of results for that item as well. I'm not sure if this is intentional behavior, but it's really confusing. If the item I'm searching doesn't have more than one page of results, for instance, I just get a completely blank page.

I feel the search is very unpolished as of now. Take a look:
Image

The first three results only pop up because they have "george" in it, but an exact match like "George Washington" doesn't appear until quite a few pages later.

Just something that you might want to improve.
