Collegiate Novice set available for high school mirrors

Post by theMoMA »

Hey all. As some of you know, I'm the editor of a tournament called Collegiate Novice that aims to introduce new players to the college quizbowl circuit. Last year, a few high school programs approached me asking if they could mirror the set for high school use. Lisgar ended up hosting a tournament on the set with good results.

The set is probably a little asymmetric with the typical high school tournament, but I wouldn't say it's harder. The questions are strictly capped at five lines and the bonuses are reasonable. You can check out past packets at http://collegiate.quizbowlpackets.com/a ... ACFNovice/ and http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/questionsets/21/.

Like in past years, there are ten packets in the set. The mirror fee is $12 per team. Email me at [email protected] with inquiries.

High school juniors and seniors at the Lisgar mirror last year found the tournament to be of average difficulty, but the biggest caveat is that some of the answer lines might be slightly obscure to the younger players. But it's just like regular invitational series sets, except it's slightly more challenging in terms of the content but a bit more relaxed on the actual clue difficulty.

It was a nice tournament to host. Though due to less interest this year in the region, I don't think Lisgar will mirror it again.

Hey all,

I haven't had anyone request to host a high school mirror of Collegiate Novice yet, but I'm still open to it. I am, however, considering posting the packets on the archives sometime soon (after this weekend, when the last mirror concludes). So I'd like to know:

1. Is anyone interested in hosting this for high school, either in this semester or next?

2. Even if not, would anyone like me to keep the set blind as a possible NASAT tryout event for the spring?

Just as a note, NASAT this year will continue to be the same difficulty it has been over the past three years, which is about the difficulty of ACF Regionals or any other regular collegiate tournament, so I encourage people to try out and practice for NASAT on packets of that level in order to avoid a shock when they get to the tournament itself. If people have found that using Collegiate Novice helps them, that's great, but I think a tournament such as Pennance, or other tournaments that are presumably going to be around that difficulty level this year, would be a better simulation of what to expect at NASAT.

Hey all, just letting you know that this set is available for mirrors either this semester or next, or for free NASAT tryouts (with the disclaimer that Matt Weiner posted above), but I must know of your interest in using the set by the end of November. If no one is interested in either use for the set, I will send it to the archives for posting on December 1.

Just to update everyone, I'm reserving the posting of the set pending a NASAT tryout use and an intramural college tournament at Rutgers on 1/29. Unless I hear from other NASAT tryouts or anyone else before then, I plan to post the set on February 1.
