Bellarmine Novice (1/12/13, San Jose, CA)

Post by Important Bird Area »

Bellarmine College Prep is pleased to announce that its annual novice tournament will take place on January 12, 2013.

Location: This tournament will take place in the Lokey Academic Center at Bellarmine College Prep, 960 West Hedding Street, San Jose, California.

Questions: We will be using the 2012-13 SCOP Novice set. (For practice material similar to the questions we will use at the tournament, please consider the 2011-12 SCOP set.)

Eligibility: All high schools (public, private, charter, religious, homeschool, etc.) are eligible to play in this event. Important: this is an introductory tournament for players and teams with limited experience of pyramidal quizbowl. If you wish to register a team containing students who have previously played at NAQT's High School National Championship Tournament or the PACE National Scholastics Championship, you must contact the tournament director for permission to play. Players with a history of strong performance at national tournaments will be encouraged to staff instead of playing.

Schools are encouraged to enter multiple teams, but please note that players must play for the same team throughout the tournament.

Qualifiers: because this is a novice tournament, it does not automatically qualify any team for national championship events. Teams that perform well are encouraged to apply for wildcard bids to both nationals.

Fees:

Base fee: $40 per team

-$10 second or subsequent team from the same school

-$10 working buzzer system (must accommodate at least eight players)

-$20 experienced moderator

-$10 scorekeeper (We will hold a brief training session during check-in for those volunteers who have never kept score before.)

-$25 per team for new schools (eligible schools are those that played no pyramidal tournaments prior to September 1, 2012)

Minimum fee per team: $0.

Payment will be taken at check-in on January 12th. Please make checks out to Bellarmine College Prep.

How to register: please contact the tournament director, Jeff Hoppes (jeff.hoppes (at) gmail.com), on or before Wednesday, January 9, 2013, indicating how many teams, buzzers, and scorekeepers your school plans to bring.

Congratulations to Amador Valley A, which won the 2013 Bellarmine Novice Tournament by defeating Amador Valley B in the first game of an advantaged final 435-220. The tournament all-stars were Jonchee Kao (Bellarmine, 102 points per game), Maggy Liu (Saratoga, 98 ppg), Gavin Pereira (Bellarmine, 96 ppg), and Nick Chow (Saratoga, 93 ppg).

Complete stats are here.

Thanks to:

-Our hosts, coaches Chris Fleitas and Joe Romano of Bellarmine College Prep

-Our staff: Ankit Aggarwal (Berkeley), Philip Cai (Escobar), and the entire crew from Bellarmine: Chris Fleitas, Joe Romano, John Cherian, Hiep Nguyen, and Ved Paranjpe

-R. Robert Hentzel of NAQT, for letting me use three of NAQT's buzzers for this non-NAQT tournament

-Kristin Strey and the entire SCOP Novice writing team for an excellent set. As a reminder, this set will be used at future tournaments and is not yet clear for public discussion. Please contact Kristin for corrections and commentary.

We'll see everyone next weekend at Berkeley!
