MITBAT VII at MIT (now MARCH 16, 2013) [HSAPQ 33]

Post by t-bar »

MIT is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the seventh MIT Beaver Academic Tournament (MITBAT VII) on Saturday, (EDIT: March) 16, 2013.

REGISTRATION
This tournament is open to teams from all geographic areas and levels of experience. Teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please register as soon as possible. The current maximum number of teams is 24, though this may increase; we will announce such an expansion in this thread if one occurs. The registration deadline is March 9—after that, we can’t guarantee you a spot in the field. For our convenience and your benefit, we request that you register as soon as you can. The registration form and instructions are available at http://quizbowl.mit.edu/mitbat.

The tournament will be held on the MIT campus, so this is a great opportunity to bring your students to visit the campuses of MIT, Harvard, and other universities as well as to experience the wonderful city of Boston.

QUESTIONS
We will be using HSAPQ’s Tournament Set #33. You can download sample questions here.

We will also be seeking affiliation with the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE), so that the top finishers will qualify for PACE’s National Scholastics Championship.

RULES
The game format will have 20 tossup questions answerable by either team. If a team answers a tossup correctly, it will have an opportunity to answer an unrelated multi-part bonus question. We will not be using computational math questions.

Each team may have up to six players on its roster, though only four players may play at any given time. If you intend to bring seven or more players, please register another team.

There will be a playoff format to be determined by the number of teams, but it will likely be some form of round-robin. All teams will be guaranteed to play at least 9 games, and all teams will be matched in the playoff rounds against teams of similar skill level.

FEES
The fees for this tournament are as follows:

+$75 first team from a school
+$65 each subsequent team
−$10 discount per working buzzer system
−$10 discount per scorekeeper provided
+$10 to purchase a paper copy of the questions

If you have any questions regarding the tournament, you can visit http://quizbowl.mit.edu/mitbat, or e-mail me at [email protected]. Please keep in mind that Boston has an excellent and safe subway and commuter rail system that may help you minimize travel and accommodation cost. Shortly before the tournament, we will contact registered teams with more detailed information. We look forward to a large and competitive tournament and hope to see you on March 16, 2013.

Attention, potential MITBAT attendees: It has come to our attention that the week of February 18-22 is a vacation week for some Massachusetts public schools, and that this may negatively impact the ablity of some schools to come. If it turns out that a large portion of our field would be eliminated by this fact, we may consider moving the tournament date. On other other hand, we don't want to inconvenience the teams that can come on February 16 and had already made plans to do so. In addition, the number of potential dates we could move to is fairly limited; it looks like we might be able to do March 16, but failing that we'd have to move deep into April or beyond.

To help us gauge the potential positive and negative impact of moving the tournament, please let me know if (a) you aren't able to come on February 16, but would come on March 16, or (b) you could come on February 16, but would be unable to come on March 16. I hope we can provide a competitive and exciting tournament for as many people as possible. Also, if another poster notices some other high school or college event that would make March 16 a bad date, please let us know.

Lexington is fine with whatever tournament date is chosen, but we would preferably like to go on Feb. 16th. I also think that there may or may not be High School Quiz Show taping

We have just received confirmation of our new room reservations, so we will be moving the tournament date to Saturday, MARCH 16. If you are currently registered, please consult with your players about how this affects your attendance plans and e-mail me with an update.

MITBAT has been awarded platinum certification by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence, which means that the top 25% of the teams at our tournament (so 6 teams if we hit our field cap) will qualify for PACE's National Scholastics Championship! There's still plenty of room in the field, so teams that are still looking to qualify for NSC should take advantage of this opportunity.

We have reached our field cap of 24 teams. If you would still like to register, please send me an e-mail I will put you on a waitlist. We will let teams in off the waitlist if any teams drop out or if we are able to expand the field.

Stats through round 5: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... t_prelims/.

We had some hiccups involving a certain other MIT activity taking over the rooms we had reserved and some tiebreakers that took a while, but the playoffs are now well underway.
