MUT Mirror at Yale (3/30/13)

Post by pleasewalkforward »

On Saturday, March 30, 2013, Yale will be hosting a mirror of the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament. This tournament is only open to undergraduates and high school students. Past MUT sets, of similar difficulty to what you should expect, can be found here: 2012; 2011; 2010. The field cap is sixteen teams.

We plan to start the tournament at 9:30 A.M.—Please try to arrive at least 15 minutes early. If there’s no possible way you can arrive on time, or if traffic or transportation problems arise, please let me know.

The tournament will be held in William L. Harkness Hall (WLH), located at 100 Wall Street, New Haven, CT. Many Yale parking lots within two to three blocks of WLH are open to the public on weekends for free, including Lots 51, 77, 78, and 78W shown here. Street parking is also available, as is garage parking in the Grove Street and Audubon Court garages, shown here.

Those arriving at New Haven Union Station can take a taxi (This will cost about $8; call 203-777-7777 if there are no cabs in sight.), walk just over a mile to campus, or ride the Yale Shuttle, which departs Union Station roughly every twenty to thirty minutes. For more information about transportation logistics, contact me at <[email protected]>.

To register, e-mail me at <[email protected]>. In your e-mail, please include:
-- The number of teams you will be bringing
-- Any discounts you plan to qualify for
-- Your preferred e-mail address
-- A phone number by which your team can be called day-of

Fees
Base fee: $120 per team
Buzzer discount: -$5 per operative buzzer system with at least eight working buzzers
Moderator discount: -$10 per competent moderator
Travel discount: -$10 per 180 miles traveled, one-way, according to Google Maps
Minimum fee per team: $80
New team discount: All teams from schools new to quizbowl need only pay the minimum fee of $80. Schools that have not played a quizbowl tournament for at least the past four years qualify for this discount. If you think your school qualifies despite having played a quizbowl tournament in the past four years, contact me.
If your expected fee would cause your team financial hardship, please also contact me.

We have one buzzer system, so we greatly appreciate you bringing yours. Similarly, outside moderators, especially graduate students who are ineligible to play, are encouraged to staff.

NOTE: If you plan to pay by check, the check must be made out to “Y. Student Academic Competitions.” Do not make checks payable to “Yale Student Academic Competitions.”

If you have any other questions or concerns, post here or e-mail me at <[email protected]>.

Quick updates: 1) UConn has registered 2 teams; 2) my Internet access over break from the 10th to the 21st may be a bit spotty, so registration processing may take longer than normal.

Unfortunately, this tournament falls during our spring break, so Brown will not be able to attend.

Harvard is interested in fielding a team if there is still space. We can provide a buzzer system or two if needed.

Live stats may appear at http://srivatsa.org/staaaats/mut2013, but I will not be in charge of stats, so no guarantees. Stats will be migrated to the DB after the tournament, as usual.

EDIT (11:30 am): Semi-live stats are happening. Round 3 is just finishing up. We have 14 teams, which are split into two prelim brackets of 7. We will then rebracket into playoff brackets of 8 (upper) and 6 (lower) and play crossover-bracket games (4 in upper, 3 in lower). A final will follow if necessary. Prelim bracket names are courtesy of Jacob Wasserman, I think.

EDIT (12:47 pm): Lunch is starting approximately now (after round 5) and should end at 1:45.

EDIT (2:54 pm): Round 7 (last round of the prelims) is wrapping up, and we will be rebracketing shortly. We are suffering from buzzer shortages and room shortages (and also possibly people shortages), so this should be fun.

EDIT (3:55 pm): Round 8 (first round of the playoffs) is wrapping up. One of our rooms was invaded and ransacked by piano enthusiasts while nobody was looking. Fie on you, pianists!

EDIT (4:00 pm): By the way, I think some eldritch combination of Jacob, Aidan, and Grace Liu gave rise to the playoff bracket names.

EDIT (6:24 pm): Penn had the advantage in a final against Columbia and won the first game, thus winning the tournament. Congratulations to Patrick, James, David, and "Saajid"! Full stats and summary post to follow later today or tomorrow.
